On the farm of today, machines provide almost all the power. One of the most important benefits will be the farm computer. A few forward-looking farmers are already using computers to help them run their farms more efficiently. The computers help them keep more accurate records so they can make better decisions on what crops to plant, how much livestock to buy, when to sell their products, and how much profit they can expect. Many computer companies have been developing special computer programs just for farmers. In the future, farmers will be able to purchase computer programs made to their needs. Because of the growing importance of computers on the farm, students at agricultural colleges are required to take computer classes in addition to their normal agricultural courses. There can be no doubt that farmers will rely on computers even more in the future. While the old time farm depended on horse power, and modern farms depend on machine power, farms of the future will depend on computer power. Another technological advance which is still in the experimental stage is the robot, a real “mechanized hired hand” that will be able to move and, in some ways, think like a human being. Agricultural engineers believe that computer aided robots will make amazing changes in farming within two decades. Unlike farmers of the present, farmers of the future will find that many day-to-day tasks will be done for them. Scientists are now developing robots that will be able to shear sheep, drive tractors, and harvest fruit. Even complex jobs will be done by robots. For example, in order to milk their cows, farmers must first drive them into the barn, then connect them to the milking machines, watch the machines, and disconnect them when they are finished. In the future, this will be done by robots. In addition, when the milking is completed, the robots will automatically check to make sure that the milk is pure. The complete modernization of the farm is far in the future, but engineers expect that some robots will be used before long.56. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. Machines are playing an important role on farms.B. Both computers and robots are already in use on todays farms. C. Farmers in the future will depend totally on computers.D. Students at agricultural colleges neednt take computer lessons.57. According to the passage, computers can NOT help farmers decide _.A. how much money they may earn from their productsB. whether to plant a certain kind of cropC. whom to sell their livestock toD. when to sell their products58. The underlined word “this” in the last paragraph refers to_. A. driving the cows into the barn B. watching the machines C. connecting the cows to the milking machines D. milking the cowsBFor many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a long war, but years go by without any clear winner. Like a border conflict between neighboring countries, the parent-teen war is about boundaries: Where is the line between what I control and what you do?Both sides want peace, but neither feels it has any power to stop the conflict. In part, this is because neither is willing to admit any responsibility for starting it. From the parents point of view, the only cause of the fight is their adolescents complete unreasonableness. And of course, the teens see it in exactly the same way, except oppositely. Both feel trapped. In this article, Ill describe three no-win situations that commonly arise between teens and parents and then suggest some ways out of the trap. The first no-win situation is quarrel over unimportant things. Examples include the color of the teens hair, the cleanliness of the bedroom, the preferred style of clothing, the childs failure to eat a good breakfast before school, or his tendency to sleep until noon on the weekends. Second, blaming. The goal of a blaming battle is to make the other admit that his bad attitude is the reason why everything goes wrong. Third, needing to be right. It doesnt matter what the topic is-politics, the laws of physics, or the proper way to break an egg-the point of these arguments is to prove that you are right and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered an authority-someone who actually knows something-and therefore to command respect. Unfortunately, as long as parents and teens continue to assume that they know more than the other, theyll continue to fight these battles forever and never make any real progress.59. Why does the author compare the parent-teen war to a border conflict? A. Both can continue for generations.B. Both are about where to draw the line. C. Neither has any clear winner.D. Neither can be put to an end.60. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean? A. The teens blame their parents for starting the conflict. B. The teens agree with their parents on the cause of the conflict. C. The teens accuse their parents of misleading them. D. The teens tend to have a full understanding of their parents.61. What will the author most probably discuss in the paragraph that follows? A. Causes for the parent-teen conflictsB. Examples of the parent-teen war. C. Solution to the parent-teen problems.D. Future of the parent-teen relationship.CAdvertisers tend to think big and perhaps this is why theyre always coming in for criticism. Their critics(批评家)seem to hate them because they have so much money to throw around. Why dont they stop advertising and reduce the price of their goods? After all, its the consumer who pays. The poor old consumer! Hed have to pay a great deal more if advertising didnt create mass markets for products. It is precisely because of the heavy advertising that consumer goods are so cheap. But we get the wrong idea if we think the only purpose of advertising is to sell goods. Another equally important function is to inform. A great deal of the knowledge we have about household goods is largely from the advertisements we read. Advertisements introduce us to new products or remind us of the existence of ones we already know about. Supposing you wanted to buy a washing machine, it is more than likely you would obtain details regarding performance, price, etc., from an advertisement. Lots of people pretend that they never read advertisements, but this claim may be seriously doubted. It is hardly possible not to read advertisements these days. And what fun they often are, too! Just think what a railway station or a newspaper would be like without advertisements. Would you enjoy gazing at a blank wall or reading railway byelaws while waiting for a train? A cheerful, witty advertisement makes such a difference to a dull wall or a newspaper full of the incidents and disasters. We must not forget, either, that advertising makes a positive contribution to our pockets. The fact that we pay so little for our daily paper, or can enjoy so many broadcast programmers is due entirely to the money spent by advertisers. Just think what a newspaper would cost if we had to pay its full price! Another thing we mustnt forget is the “small ads.” What a tremendously useful service they perform for the community! Just about anything can be accomplished through these columns. For instance, you can find a job, buy or sell a house, announce a birth, marriage or death in what used to be called the “hatch, match and dispatch” column(栏目) but by far the most fascinating section is the personal or “agony” column. No other item in a newspaper provides such entertaining reading or offers such a deep insight into human nature. Its the best advertisement for advertising there is! 62.What is the main idea of this passage?A. Advertisements steal money from our pockets B. The critics get the wrong idea of advertisements.C. Advertisers perform a useful service to communities.D. Advertisements are everywhere.63.What is the attitude of the author toward advertisements? A. He appreciates the role of advertisements.B. He doubts the effect of advertisements.C. He believes what is said in advertisements.D. He complains too many advertisements in daily life.64.Which of the following is Not True?A. The personal or “agony” column makes us know more about human nature.B. The only purpose of advertising is to sell goods. C. A newspaper will cost us more if there is no advertisement on it.D. Advertisement makes our life colorful.65.Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?A B C D (= Paragraph 1, = paragraph 2, = paragraph 3, = paragraph 4, = paragraph 5)DFrequently Asked QuestionsWhats the difference between High School Summer College and a summer camp?Stanfords High School College is an academically selective program that provides access to college education at one of Americas most respected universities.
