How to Find Your Dream CareerDo you want to have a career that you truly enjoy, rather than just one that gets you the pay bills but steals away your life? What are the things you can do before you finish school to help you find that career? After talking with some of my friends who have succeeded in finding their dream careers, I come to learn many tips that we can try if we are to locate the career we dream of. Today I want to share with you three of the most important tips Ive learned. By knowing how to identify your interests and strengths, trying various types of jobs, and getting support and information from others, you can discover the career that is right for you. Tip one: Discover your strengths and interests. The better you know yourself, the easier its for you to find your dream career. (Then how to find discover your strengths and interests?)You can discover your strengths and interests by assessing yourself carefully. Think of where your interest lies in school. Are you interested in any particular subject or activity? If you are, thats probably something your want to do for a lifetime. Think about comments people have given you regarding your strengths, talent, etc. This can help you realize things you dont know about yourself.You can discover your strengths and interests by taking online career tests. If a test shows you strive to be creative, it may suggest that you like imagination and personal expression. Then jobs such as graphic designer, art director, yoga instructor, architect, actor, etc. may suit you best. If a test shows that you strive to be secure, you may likely want to be stable or accurate. Then jobs that have consistency may suit you. These jobs include accountant, electrical engineer, dentist, school administrator, public servant, computer programmer, etc.Tip two: Try various types of jobs.You can try summer jobs. Summer jobs can develop you skills and help you discover what kind of work youre good at by actually doing it. Summer jobs also lets you see that types of environment you do or do not want to be working in. You can try internships. Internships give you a chance to work for a company for a set period of time, often before youre actually qualified to get a job there. Internships are a great opportunity to experience that “real world” and see what the environment, culture and politics are like in a career youre interested in. You can also try volunteer work. Volunteer work means you help a non-profit charity. It gives you an opportunity to do a good deed while uncovering skills and interests that you didnt know you had. Volunteering also gives you exposure to a wider variety of people, which broadens your network. To get all these types of work opportunities, you can: talk to the counselors in your schools career center; reach out to the human resources departments at the companies you want to work for ask what they have available; view various websites that advertise summer or internship job opportunities. Tips three: Get support and information from other sources. Do research by yourself. Find out about the industry. What are the expectations, knowledge and skills needed? What preparations need to be made? Network with people in the industry. Get to know people or contact friends in the industry so you get a feel of what it is like up front.
