An Analysis of the Tragic Life of Sister Carriein the Novel Sister Carrie (Times New Roman,小二，加粗)by*A Thesis Presented to Department of Humanities and Foreign Languages，College of High Tech, Xian University of Science and Technologyin Partial Fulfillment of the Requirementsfor the Bachelor of Arts Degree June 10, 2011(Times New Roman, 三号，不加粗)Class: 20*-0* （入学班级）Supervisor: * （拼音）摘 要嘉莉妹妹是西奥多.德莱塞文学创作生涯的起点，也是一部颇受争议的作品。它的问世是对当时美国社会传统道德标准的一个严重挑战。因为当时人们认为此书有伤风化，所以它一度在美国遭禁，后来才终于在美国出版，并逐渐受到人们的高度评价并被一些评论家视为美国20世纪自然主义宏篇巨著。嘉莉妹妹讲述的是一个憧憬城市繁华的农村姑娘追求理想生活的故事，故事女主人公嘉莉妹妹满怀对都市生活的憧憬从家乡小镇来到芝加哥，在那经历了求职的艰难，失业的痛苦和幻想的破灭，最后为生活所迫，先后沦为两个男人的情妇，不过她的梦想还在。一次偶然的机会她成为一个剧场的演员，并显露才华，成为百老汇明星，获得了曾经梦想的一切，然而她并未获得真正的幸福，依然感到彷徨、迷惘，这对一个女人来说，是一场悲剧。本论文通过分析嘉莉妹妹曲折、悲剧的一生来反映整个美国社会甚至资本主义的悲剧。它包括七个部分：首先简要介绍小说及其作者以及悲剧人物的界定；接着分析嘉莉妹妹的悲剧，紧接着从嘉莉个人背景、家庭背景、社会环境来分析产生悲剧的原因；然后对嘉莉的人格和人生悲剧做具体分析；最后进一步揭示嘉莉悲剧也是美国社会的悲剧。关键词：悲剧 道德 幸福 美国梦 （ 关键词中间无标点，空2格）AbstractSister Carrie as the first novel of Theodore Dreiser is a very controversial book. Being considered as a great challenge to traditional moral code at that time, it had been forbidden publishing in America. Until it was reissued in 1910，its value in literature and in morality had been recognized, even was regarded as a masterpiece of the naturalistic literature in the 20th century.(在英文状态下空4个字符)The story of Sister Carrie is about a poor country girl who longs for city life pursues her dream in Chicago. The protagonistCarrie Meeber who has good wish for city life leaves her poor home for the prosperous cityChicago. However, when she arrives there, she finds everything was disappointing. There she goes through the difficulty in looking for a job, the pain of unemployment as well as the disillusion of her dream. This paper will analyze Sister Carries tragic life to further explore the tragedy of the American society. It consists of seven chapters. Chapter one and two begin with a brief introduction to the author and the novel as well as the definition of a tragic person. Chapter three and four analyze the tragedy of Sister Carrie and the causes for it from personal background, family background and social reality. Chapter five deals with the development of the tragedy of Sister Carrie. Chapter six studies the result of Sister Carrie.
