Have you been doing Internet shopping rather than going to the stores? What cant you be bothered to do? A study into how lazy British people are has found more than half of adults are so lazy that theyd use the lift rather than climb two flights of stairs. Just over 2,000 people were interviewed by independent researchers at Nuffield Health, Britains largest health charity. The results were surprising. About one in six people surveyed said if their remote control was broken, they would continue watching the same channel rather than get up. More than one third of those questioned said they would not run to catch a bus. Worryingly, of the 654 respondents with children, 64% said they were often too tired to play with them. This led the report to conclude that its no wonder that one in six children in the UK are classified as obese(肥胖) before they start school. Dr.Sarah Dauncey, medical director of Nuffield Health, said, “People need to get fitter, not just for their own sake, but for the sake of their families, friends and evidently their pets too. If we dont start to take control of this problem, a whole generation will become too unfit to perform even the simple tasks.” And Scotlands largest city, Glasgow, was shamed as the most indolent city in the UK, with 75% surveyed admitting they do not get enough exercise, followed closely by Birmingham and Southampton, both with 67%. The results pose serious challenges for the National Health Service, where obesity related illnesses such as heart disease and cancer have been on a steady increase for the past 40 years and are costing billions of pounds every year.24. What do lazy British people probably choose to do?A. Go to stores. B. Catch the lift.C. Cook from scratch. D. Climb flights of stairs.25. How many people surveyed dont play with children because of tiredness?A. About 333. B. About 419. C. About 654. D. About 1280.26. What is the potential result of more and more people, including children, getting obese?A. People will not get enough exercise.B. People will not have enough money.C. People will not be able to do the easy job.D. People will not cure themselves of heart disease.27. What is the authors attitude towards the finding of the study?A. Indifferent. B. Doubtful. C. Negative. D. Supportive.COf course, she wasnt really my aunt and, out of fear, I never called her that to her face. I only referred to her as “My Aunt Fannie” because the name always made my father laugh quietly and gave my mother cause to look strictly at both of usat me for being disrespectful of my elder and at my father for encouraging my bad behavior. I enjoyed both reactions so I looked for every opportunity to work the name into as many conversations as possible. As a young woman, my mother had worked in the kitchen of a large Victorian farmhouse. During those years my mother helped Aunt Fanny make the best blueberry jam ever tasted by anyone in Glenfield. She was well-known for her jam and for never sharing the recipe with others. Even though my mother knew the recipe by heart, as long as Aunt Fannie was alive, she never made the jam without Aunt Fannie in our kitchen to direct the process and preserve the secret. Each August, my mother would prepare me for Aunt Fannies visit. One year, after I had helped with the jam process Aunt Fannie gave me a coin and then made me promise that I would never spend it. “Hold onto this coin,” she said, “and someday you will be rich. I still have my very first coin, given to me by my grandmother.” So I kept the coin in a small box and waited to become rich. I now have the blueberry jam recipe and the coin from Aunt Fannie. In peoples eyes Aunt Fannies success resulted from that secret recipe. But to me, it was just a common recipe. Neither have significantly made me become a rich person, but I keep them as reminders to hold onto the valuable things in life. Money can make you feel rich for a while, but it is the relationships and the memories of time spent with friends and family that truly leave you wealthy. And that is a fortune that anyone can build.28. Why did the author always use the name “My Aunt Fannie” in conversations? A. She was frightened of Aunt Fannie. B. She liked Aunt Fannies recipe. C. She enjoyed her parents responses. D. She greatly respected “Aunt Fannie”.29. The underlined word “she” in Paragraph 2 refers to _. A. Aunt Fannie B. the authors grandmother C. the authors mother D. Aunt Fannies grandmother30. In the last paragraph, the author encourages readers to_. A. hold onto the first coin in life B. make as many friends as possible C. make money with their own hands D. spend more time with family and friends 31. What could be the best title for this passage? A. The Key to Success B. Blueberry Jam RecipeC. A Fortune Built from a Coin D. A Relationship of TrustDWhere do you keep ice? In the freezer, of course. Thats what scientists might have thought when they were looking for a safe place to store ice from mountain glaciers from around the world. Theyve decided to store ice in Antarctica because global warming is causing some of the glaciers in places like the Alps to melt.Jerome Chappellaz of the French National Centre for Scientific Research is involved in creating an ice vault (地下室) there. He says: “We are probably the only scientific community whose sample (样本) is in danger of disappearing from the face of the planet. If you work on rocks or on tree rings, the raw material is still here and will be for many centuries.”And why do scientists need to study ice from the Alps, for example? Ice formed on the top of a mountain is made of snow accumulated over thousands of years. Trapped air bubbles (气泡) contain samples of the atmosphere that existed when that ice was formed. Ice is a record of climate. By examining ice, we know carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is higher now than in the last three million years. Researchers use this kind of data to build computer models and try to predict what might happen in the future. The ice vault will be housed in a snow cave at the Concordia Research Station, which is operated by scientistsfrom France and Italy. The ice samples will be sealed in bags and placed 10 meters below the surface, at a constant temperature of -50. This will put the scientists minds at rest. Losing the ice samples would be a disaster, and nobody wants to see a mine ofscientific knowledge lost forever in a giant pool.32. What makes Antarctica a safe place to store ice?A. Its large mountains.B. Its function as a freezer.C. The abundant ice samples there.D. The absence of global warming.33. Jerome compares ice with rocks and tree rings to state that _.A. its necessary to store iceB. its more valuable to study iceC. ice disappears very quicklyD. ice should be stored at home34. What is the researchers purpose of studying ice?A. To learn about climate.B. To learn about the Alps.C. To trap air bubbles.D. To reduce carbon dioxide.35. What do scientists think of storing ice in Antarctica?A. They consider it an easy job.B. Theyre not optimistic about it.C. They think it will cause disasters.D. They think its a reliable way.第二节(共5小题$每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Some people just know how to start a conversation with anyone, in any place. If youre not one of these lucky types, dont worry. 36 Remark on the surroundings or occasion. If youre at a party, for example, you could comment on the food or the music in a positive way like this: “I love this song.” or “The foods great.” 37 For example. “How is the wine?” or “Who do you know here?” Most people enjoy talking about themselves so asking a question is a good way to get a conversation started. 38 For example, “I really like your purse. Can I ask where you got it?” or “Youre really doing well in this. Can you show me how to do it?”Remark on anything you have in common.
