，及特殊用法归纳 作者:李生辉 众所周知，英语中something常用于肯定句中，anything常用于否定句中，nothing表否定。但在高考阅读中遇到含有这些词的一些句子时，学生们常感到莫名其妙，难以理解。如： 1. You might think that “global warming” means nothing more than a rise in the worlds temperature.(2005 D篇) 2. After all, Eds idea of exercise has always been nothing more effort-making than lifting a fork to his mouth.(2003完形填空) 3. And I had an uneasy feeling he had something there.(2002完形填空) 本文拟就这些词的特别用法加以总结，相信会对大家有所裨益。 一、 something 1. 表示“不简单的事；可观的成绩；有些地位的人”。例如： She thinks shes something since she won the beauty contest.( 有些地位的人) We must believe that each of us is able to do something well, and that, when we discover what this something is, we must work until we succeed.(不简单的事) 2. 用于一些动词短语中: 1) have something on 拿着某人的把柄。例如： Although Miss Brown is not a good worker, her boss does not fire her because she has something on him. 2) make something of小题大做；瞎猜测；凭吵架 / 生气；看懂意思。例如： When girls see another girl with a boy, they often try to make something of it. Ann didnt like what Mary said about her. She tried to make something of what Mary said. I apologize for the untidiness of my letter, but I hope you can make something of it. 3) make something of oneself / ones life 取得成功, 有出息。例如： Hes a clever boyI hope hell make something of himself. 4) see something of someone 有时见到某人。例如： I hope well see something of you now that you live nearby. 5) something tells me 我想 / 感到；我有理由相信。例如： Something tells me my watch isnt quite right. In the morning my students always read English or something. 2) something for nothing 不冒风险（不下功夫）就有收获。例如： Some people will never learn that you cant get something for nothing. 3) something like大约,约摸；有点像。例如： It cost something like ten pounds. The building looked something like a church. 4) something / anything like ( = in any way; similarly) 相似的；大致如此。例如： I see them once every two months, or something like that. Ill whistle the tune for you; it goes something like this. He isnt anything like my first boss. 5) something of ( = to some degree)有点；可说是一个；在某种程度上是。例如： The soldier found himself something of a hero when he returned to his village. She found herself something of a celebrity. It is said that Jack is very rich and is always changing his private cars. What is he? And I had an uneasy feeling he had something there.(深刻道理) 二、 anything 1. 用于成语中 1) be anything but (= definitely not) 表程度，意为“绝对不 / 根本不是 / 一点也不”。例如： I dont mean hes lazyanything but! He was anything but a hero / polite. 他根本不是英雄 / 他一点也不礼貌。 The hotel was anything but satisfactory. Alone in a deserted house, he was so busy with his writing that he felt anything but lonely. 2) be (as) . as anything （口语）不得了。例如： Its (as) easy as anything. 3) if anything 如果有什么不同的话。例如： If anything, my new job is harder than my old one. 4) like anything (= very much, successfully) 表程度（拼命地 / 非常地 / 像似地）。例如： The thief ran like anything when he saw the policeman. Theyre always slagging me off like anything.他们经常把我骂得狗血喷头。 5) or anything 或是其他别的事。例如： If Bernard wants to call me or anything, Ill be here all day. 三、 nothing 1 用于一些动词短语中: 1) be nothing to a. 不引起的兴趣，对无所谓（相当于 mean nothing to）。例如： The news is / means nothing to him. 他对这消息不感兴趣 / 无所谓。 b. 无法和相比。例如： My losses are nothing to yours. 2) come to nothing 失败，没有结果。例如： All his schemes came to nothing. 3) have nothing on不比强。例如： Even though she is older, Jane has nothing on Peter in school. 4) have nothing to do with sb.和没关系。例如： This has nothing to do with you. 5) make nothing of a. 不在意，觉得没什么。例如： He makes / thinks nothing of walking 15 miles. b. 一点也不懂。例如： I could make nothing of what he said. 6) mean nothing to对没有意义。 These technical words mean nothing to me. b. 不引起兴趣，对无所谓（相当于be nothing to）。例如： He used to like Jane but she means / is nothing to him now. 7) go for nothing 白费。例如： All our work has gone for nothing. All the preparation was for nothing because the visit was cancelled. c. 无缘无故地。例如： They quarrelled for nothing. 2) nothing but (= only)只有，只不过。例如： Dont have him for a friend: hes nothing but a criminal. Nothing but a miracle can save her now. I want nothing but the vest for my friends. 3) nothing for it 没有别的办法。例如： With the bridge destroyed, there was nothing for it but to swim. 4) nothing if not (= very) 非常,极其。例如： The young doctor is nothing if not wise. The holiday was nothing if not varied.
