If only he lived in the town. He got off the bus when it stopped at his mailbox. But he wasnt in the mood (情绪)to wave as it drove away. “Im home!” Colin called when he pushed open the gate. He threw his schoolbag down on a kitchen chair. “How was school?” His mother asked, walking in with his baby brother on her shoulder. “Ive got homework,” Colin plained. “Eat something before doing your chores.” His mother gave him the animal biscuits. Colin ate two tigers, three lions, and a seal, then drank some milk.Astrid, Colins dog, woofed as Colin walked toward the barn(谷仓). Her young dogs were yipping(犬吠声). Colin placed dog food into their pan. In the chicken house, Colin hurried two hens from their nests. He put their warm eggs into his jacket. The black cow napped in the sun. Colin woke her when he poured corn into her pan. “Moo, thank you! ” she seemed to say. Colin put the eggs in the kitchen, then climbed to his tree house as usual. He could see Dads beehives(蜂箱)by the field. Six hives usually meant plenty of humming noise. But today he couldnt hear it over the chattering sound of the sparrows. How could a person think? “QUIET!”Colin shouted. Suddenly, he sat up straight. Cows mooed and young dogs yipped. Chickens crackled in their yard. He kept walking up and down restlessly, his face pale, and his hands shaking slightly. His head teacher had referred him to me. This boy has lost his family, he wrote. He is understandably very sad and refuses to talk to others, and Im very worried about him. Can you help?”I looked at David and showed him to a chair. How could I help him? There are problems psychology doesnt have the answer to, and which no words can describe. Sometimes the best thing one can do is to listen openly and sympatheticallyThe first two times we met, David didnt say a word. He sat there, only looking up to look at the childrens drawings on the wall behind me. I suggested we play a game of chess. He nodded. After that he played chess with me every Wednesday afternoon一in plete silence and without looking at me. Its not easy to cheat in chess, but I admit I made sure David won once or twice.Usually, he arrived earlier than agreed, took the chess board and pieces from the shelf and began setting them up before I even got a chance to sit down. It seemed as if he enjoyed my pany. But why did he never look at me?Perhaps he simply needs someone to share his pain with, I thought. Perhaps he senses that I respect his suffering. ”Some months later, when we were playing chess, he looked up at me suddenly. It”s your turn, he said. After that day, David started talking. He got friends in school and joined a bicycle club. He wrote to me a few times about his biking with some friends, and about his plan to get into university. Now he had really started to live his own life.Maybe I gave David something. But I also learned that one一without any words一can reach out to another person. All it takes is a hug, a shoulder to cry on, a friendly touch, and an ear that listens.28. When he first met the author, David . D Whats your dream vacation? Watching wildlife in Kenya? Boating down the Amazon? Sunbathing in Malaysia? New chances are opening up all the time to explore the world. So we visit travel agents, pare packages and prices ,and pay our money. We know what our vacation costs us. But do we know what it might cost someone else? Its true that many poorer countries now depend on tourism for foreign ine. Unfortunately, though, tourism often harms the local people more than it helps them. It might cost their homes and lands. In Myanmar, 5,200 people were forced to leave their homes among the pagodas(佛塔)in Bagan so that tourists could visit the pagodas. Tourism might also cost the local people their livelihood and dignity. Local workers often find only menial(卑微的)jobs in the tourist industry. And most of the profits do not help the local economy. Instead, profits return to the tour operators in wealthier countries, When the Maasai people in Tanzania were driven from their lands, some moved to city slums(贫民窟). Others now make a little money selling souvenirs or posing for photos.Problems like these were observed more that 20 years ago. But now some non-government organizations, tour operators and local governments are working together to begin correcting them. Tourists, too, are putting on the pressure. The result is responsible tourism, or “ethical tourism.” Ethical tourism has people at its heart. New international agreements and codes of conduct can help protect the peoples lands, homes, economies and cultures. The beginnings are small, though, and the problems are plex. But take heart. The good news is that everyone, including us, can play a part to help the local people in the places we visit. Tour operators and panies can help by making sure that local people work in good conditions and earn reasonable wages. They can make it a point to use only locally owned hotel, restaurants and guide services. They can share profits fairly to help the local economy. And they can involve the local people in planning and managing tourism. What can tourists do? First, we can ask tour panies to provide information about the conditions of local citizens. We can then make our choices and tell them why. And while were abroad, we can: Buy local foods and products, not imported ones. Pay a fair price for goods and services and not bargain for the cheapest price. Avoid flaunting wealth. Ask before taking photographs of people. They are not just part of the landscape! Lets enjoy our vacation and make sure others do, too.32. What is probably the best title for the article? A. Vacations Cost More Than You Think B. Tourism Calls for Good Behavior. C. Vacations Bring a Lot of Fun. D. Tourism Causes Bad Effects33. Which of the following is not mentioned? A. Local people were well paid to leave their lands. B. The underlined phrase take heart means . A. pay attention B. cheer up C. take care D. calm down35. According to the passage, the writer thinks . A. tourism is not a promising industry B. dream vacations should be spent abroad C. the problems caused by tourism are easy to settle D. tourists should respect local customs and culture第二节(共5小题:每小题2分, 满分10分) 根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where weve never been before. But just as in face to face munication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when online. 36 Imagine how youd feel if you were in the other persons shoes. For anything youre about to send: ask yourself, “Would I say this to the persons face?” If the answer is no, rewrite and reread. 37 If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct (本能) is to fire back in the same manner. 38 You should either ignore the person, or use your chat software to block their messages.
