It has a great effect upon us to this day and remains novel as time goes by. The thesis will explore the origin and the evolution of vampires, study the representations of the image of vampires in western literature and thoroughly analyze the image itself and its meaning.Vampire, the image without basis of existence, reflects various issues of religion, philosophy, psychology, sociology, etc. By searching the origin of the image of vampires from different directions and probing into the evolution of the image, we can learn the differences in economy, culture, religion, even ideology from different aspects of periods and regions. Thus we can reveal relevant social reality, seek the mystery of human nature and cause the introspection of the human race. Meanwhile, we can learn of the influence of social development and the transformation of peoples thoughts on the vampire culture from the comparison of diverse types of vampire legends in different periods. Therefore, studying the image of vampires in western literature can not only has a certain sense of inspiration and guidance for the study of western literature and culture, but also helps the learner to foster the learning capacity and the spirit of inquiry.2已了解的本课题国内外研究现状On this subject, the following domestic and foreign scholars have made the study:Bob Curran collected a great deal of vampire legends from Ireland, Malaysia, Indonesia and other places in Encyclopedia of the Undead and researched the process of the legends spread and evolution. He comprehensively introduces the image of vampire and its characteristic in different cultural backgrounds to us and subverts our common understanding of the pale evil melancholy but noble image of vampires.In La Fascination Des Vampires, Jean Marigny does an in-depth historical research about the origin and evolution of vampires from the ancient civilization in Europe. He also explains the reasons and significance of the vampire superstitions formation and spread.Montague Summers expounds on the vampire phenomena and its relevant outcome to us at great length in The Vampire in Lore and Legend. He records many folk legends about death and vampires in order to alter peoples understanding of vampires by factual information.3本课题的研究内容This thesis is to carry out the study from the following points :. Introduction. This chapter briefly introduced the main contents of the thesis. The image of vampires has a great effect upon us to this day and remains novel as time goes by. And more and more attention has been attracted by the image itself and the relevant social reality. The origin and evolution of the image of vampires. This chapter discusses the origin and evolution of the image of vampires. The image of vampires in western literature. This chapter researches the image of vampires in western literature in the field of novel, poetry and films. The analysis of the image of vampires and its significance. This chapter mainly analyze the contradiction of the vampires and the social reality which reflected by this image. Conclusion. Its an overview of this paper. By searching the origin and evolution of the image of vampires and generalizing its expression in western literature, we can thoroughly study the image itself and its significance, learn the western literature and culture well and study the relevant social reality through this image.
