There was nothing warm about him. He lived a secretive, lonely live, and took no interest in other people at all. The cold inside him made his eyes red, and his thin lips blue, and his voice high and cross. It put white frost in his heart made the air around him cold, too. In the hottest days if summer his office was as cold as ice, and it was just as cold in winter. Nobody could take anything from him. Animals as well as people were afraid of him. But Scrooge didnt care. It was just what he wanted.)ACT 1(One Christmas Eve, old Scrooge was working busily in his office, it was very cold. Scrooge kept his office door open, in older to check that his clerk, Bob, was working. At this time, Scrooges nephew came to see him.)N: Merry Christmas, uncle! God bless you!S: Bah! Humbug!N: Christmas is humbug! Surely you dont mean that, uncle?S: I do. Why do you call it “merry” Christmas? Youre too poor to be merry.N: Well, why are you so cross? You are too rich to be unhappy.S: Of course Im cross. When I live in a world full of stupid people like you! You say “Merry Christmas”! But what is Christmas? Just a time when you spend too much, when you find yourself a year older and not an hour richer, when you have to pay your bills. Everyone who goes around saying “Merry Christmas” should have his tongue cut out. Yes he should!N: Uncle! Please dont say that! Ive always thought of Christmas as a time to be helpful and kind to other people. Its the only time of the year when men and women open their heart freely to each other. And so, uncle, although Ive never made any money from it, I think Christmas has been and will be a good time for me! And I say, God bless Christmas!B: Yeah, I totally agree with you!S: If I hear another sound from you, youll lose your job.N: Dont be angry with him, uncle, come and have dinner with us tomorrow.S: Dinner with you? Ill see you dead first!N: But why dont you come? Why?S: Because Christmas is humbug! Good afternoon!N: I want nothing from you. I ask nothing of you. Why can we be friends?S: Good afternoon!N: Im sorry, with all my heart, to find you like this. I have never wanted to argue with you. But I came to see you and invite you because its Christmas, and so Ill say, a merry Christmas, uncle!S: Good afternoon!N: And a happy new year!S: Good afternoon!N: Merry Christmas, Bob. (Left)B: The same to you. ACT 2（Scrooges nephew left the office with a little disappointment. Not very soon, a comfortable looking gentleman came in, with books and papers in his hand.）G: Excuse me, are you Mr. S?S: Yes, whats up?G: Im sure you are a very kind man. At this happy time of the year, Mr. S, we should help poor people who have no food or clothes or homes.S: And there no prison?G: Plenty of prisons.S: And the workhouses, where poor people can live and work? Are they still open?G: Yes, they are. Im sorry to say.S: Im happy to hear it. I thought, from what you said at first, that perhaps these helpful places were closed, for some reason.G: But some of us feel. These places dont offer enough to poor people. Were hoping to give some meat and drink, and wood for a fire, to people who need all these things. This is a time when we should all be able to enjoy ourselves. How much will you give, sir?S: Nothing! I dont have a merry Christmas myself, and I dont want to pay for other people to be merry. We all have to pay for prisons and workhouses. They cost enough. The poor will have to go there.G: Many cant go there, and many prefer to die.S: If they prefer to die, why dont they die, then? There are too many people in the world, so its a good thing if some of them die. All this is none of my business! Its enough for a man to understand his own business, and not to think about other peoples. Im a very busy man. Good afternoon, gentleman! (Left sadly)S: Youll want a holiday all day tomorrow, I suppose?B: If you dont mind, sir.S: I do mind. Its no fair. I have to pay you for a days work when you dont do any work.B: Its only once a year, sir.S: Thats no reason of robbing me every 25th of December! But I suppose you must have it. Be here early next morning.B: Yes, sir. I promise I will! (Hurried away)ACT 3(Scrooge always ate his dinner alone. Tonight was no different from other nights. He read the newspapers, looked at his bank books, and went to bed. He lived in rooms which had belonged to his dead partner Marley, a cold clever mean people as Scrooge. They were in an old, dark building in a lonely side street, where no one except Scrooge lived. Scrooge went upstairs slowly with his one candle. The instant after he went into his bedroom, closed the door, he surprised to see that his dead partner Marley was in his room.)S: Ah! Humbug! (Try to be calm) Well, what do you want and who are you?M: In life I was your business partner, Marley.S: Its humbug, I tell you! No ghosts!(Marley cried sadly)S: Yes, yes, you are real. I see that now! Why have you come? Why do ghosts come back from the dead? Tell me, M!M: The spirit of every man who does not help other people in life has to travel endlessly through the world after his death; we have to carry the chains that we made for ourselves in our life time. Do you, S, recognize my chain? It is very like the chain that you wear.S: (Look around, but see no chains.) please tell me more!M: I cannot help you much, S! I cannot rest, cannot stay anywhere for long. I have been dead for seven years and all that time I have been traveling on the wings of the wind! No peace, no rest for me in death, because I was never kind in life.S: But you were always a good man of business, M.M: (Shouted.) Business!
