Headline:The border issue between Thailand and Cambodia.Lead sentence:7 Thais were arrested by Cambodian soldiers on Dec 29 near Nong Jan village in Sa Kaeos Aranyaprathet district.They were detained in Cambodia on charges of illegal entry The Thai government have done all it can to free the seven Thais who are being held in a Cambodian prison.Some of the 7 Thais have got the bial and the other 2 are putting a request for a royal pardon.No conclusion is drawed now.Moreover the case also led to the border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia The most important point of this dispute lies in whether the district that the 7 Thais were arrested is in the Cambodian territory or Thailand.Because of the dispute,many fighting has erupted in the disputed area and across the border.Some relevant agencies are involved to worktogether to solve the dispute.However, Thailand and Cambodia disagree on how the border conflict should be resolved. Thailand insists on bilateral talks while Cambodia anvisages a role for outside parties(ASEAN and UNSC).After all, the dispute is still heared.The Body:1,Over 500 villegers in Khok Sung district gather in front of the district office to protest against the planned rally by the network and PAD supporters on January 3.The 7 Thais were in Phnom Penh in a bid to seek bail for them.The patroits held public rally to demand Phnom Penh to release the 7 Thais who were arrested for illegal entry into Cambodia on January 4.At the same time ,the foreign,Justice and Defence ministries have been deployed to help the 7 After the cabinet meeting2,The Burapa Task force commander led a group to a barbed wire fence along the temporary border line and confirmed that the 7 were 55 inside the claimed Cambodian territory on January 6.That day, the Cambodia court also heared the illegal entry cases against the 7 Thais. The whole process lasted nearly 12 hours. After the trial, the 7 were taken to a prison in the outskirts of Phnom Penh to continue pending trial. The court has not disclosed to the press of the trial case and did not specify whether prosecuted the 7 Thais for the crime of illegal immigration and illegal prosecution of this crime into restricted military zones 3,The Foreign Ministry submitted bail requests for the seven Thai detainees with the Phnom Penh Mulnicipal Court on January 10.Two of the 7 Thai suspects were slapped with an additional charges od espionage on January 11 .4,The Thai patriots Network hold a rally to threaten to close the Aranyaprathet-Poipet checkpoint in Sa Kaeo yo press for the release of the 7 Thais on January 13.In spite of it,the Cambodian Prime Minister ,HunSen, wouldnt release the 7 Thais.The Thai patriots Network cancelled the rally after local people voiced strong objections to the move.To Mr Veera ,he refused to give a statement to Cambodian municipal court unless he could do so through an Interpreter provided by the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh .5,The court granted bail to Mr Panich and Ms Narumol for health reason on condition that they stay in Cambodia and report to authorities there when summoned on January 14. And Chavanond Interakomalyasut,Mr Panich and Ms Nanemol left Prey Sar prison at 10 am and given shelter at the residence of the Thai ambassador to Cambodia.6,On January 18,Cambodias Appleal Court heared the case again. The 5 of the 7 Thais were scheduled to arrive at the court.The media was baared from taking photographs.After an-hour hearing, Cambodias Appleal Court granted bail to another four Thais being held for trespassing on Cambodian territory, but it was refusing to free Veera. The Thai embassy in Cambodia put up million riel ,or about 7,500Baht,as bail surety for each of the detainees.The another four were ordered by the Appeal Court not to leave the country until the Phnom Penh Mulnicipal Court completed their trial. So far,the Appeal Courts decision brought the total number of Thai nationals freed on bail to six.7,Three of the 7 Thais appointed a third Cambodian lawyer hired by the Thai patriots Network to help to fight the charges against them on January 20. The Santi Asoke sect jointed the Thai patriots Network rally in front of Government House to pressure the government to help to bring the 7 Thai nationals being held in Cambodia on illegal entry charges that day.And actually,the PAD postponed its rally from Dec 11 last year to protest against possible parliamentary endorsement of minutes from previous meetings of the Thai-Cambodian Joint Boundary Commission.On January 21,the other 5 Thais received suspended 8- month jail terms 9,On January 24,Thailand Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva insisted that his government wouldnt bow to pressure from the PAD ,Thai patriots Network and the Santi Asoke sect ahead of their planned joint rally.The PAD called on the government to revoke the 2000 memo of understanding governing border areas and wanted the government to force Cambodians from every disputed area and to cancel Thailands membership of Unescos World Hentage Committee(3 demands).While the Thai patriots Network and the Santi Asoke sect were encamped outside the Government House to force the government to alter its stanf on its dealings with Phnom Penh. At the same time, Thai troops threatened to remove a stone tablet in a temple carring a message calling Thai soliers “invaders”.The temple,about 300 metres from Preah Vihear,is in a disputed 4.6-squarekilometre area claimed by countries.The Thai troops remained in the temple and steadily increased their number to 200.The two sides later agreed to a staged reduction of troops at the temple to 30,then 20 and finnally 10.10, On January 25, plice have seized 2 homemade bombs and other ammunition from a group who reportedly confessed to having been hired to sabotage the PADrally planned for that day.Police used a watergun to destroy the bombscircuits.And a house on Soi Rama28,police also found a number of rocket-propelled grendes and more ammunition, including about 30 bullets. The PAD closed Makkahawam Bridge to set up a stage,while the Thai patriots Network and the Santi Asoke sect were encamped at Chamai Marechet Brige on nearby Phitsanulok Road. The PAD members installed 60 tolites and 60 bathroom in a clear signal to the government that they plan to uccupy the site on Ratchadmanoen Nok Avenue for some time.But Abhisit Vejjajiva didnt bow to the demand.That day,Mr Panich and four other Thais were sentenced to nine months in jail and fined one million riel.But the jail terms were suspended and the five allowed to return home.11, On January 25,About 5,000 supporters of the PAD and Thai patriots Network jointed yellow shirts rallies causing traffic congestion around the Government House.The yellow shirts demand the government to revoke the 2000 memo of understanding with Cambodia setting out their border disagreement,withdraw its membership of the World Heritage Committee,and eject Cambodians living in disputed area along the border. The entire stretch of the road from the bridge to the intersection,as well as the adjacent Panich intersection,was closed to trafic.And about 150 policemen were on stand-by to keep peace and order.12, On January 26,Cambodia demolished the stone tablet that claimed it owned the disputed area.But the stone was replaced and the new message was more aggressive,reading,“Here is Cambodia”.The 2nd Army Commander led about20 armed soldier to Kaew Sikha Khin Sawara temple to demand the Cambodian troops to remove the new tablet.About 12:15pm,Cambodia had its soldier destroy the new tablet.13, On January 27,Foreign Affairs Minister Kasit Piromya refused to accept the PADs demand.While the PAD and Thai patriots Network also refused to abandon their protest.14,On January 28, the tension led to a visit to the disputed area by Hun Sen s 33 year-old son in a bid to map out the battle strategies for the Cambodian millitary.15,On February 1,Thailand maintained that the Kaew Sikha Khin Sawara is situated on Thai territory and demanded Cambodia to remove both the pagoda and its flag denouncing the call as “insulting and unacceptable”over the pagoda.16, On February 2,Veera was sentenced to 8 years in jail and his secretary Ratree to 6 years for espionage.The court also fined Mr Veera 1.8 millon riel and Ms Ratree 1.2 million riel, and seized two diaries, a cellphone,a tape recorder and a video recorder from Mr Veera.Thailand ramped up its military presence in the disputed area along the boder with Cambodia as Cambodia refused to remove its national flag. Thailand erected its own in response.17, On February 6,the shots were fired in border areas near tambon Phu Pha Mok in Kantharalak about 1:30pm.The fighting included artillery five and shots from small firearms and lasted about 15minutes.No deaths or injuried were reported.A more severe exchange began at 6:30pm and lasted until 9:40pm with heavy artillery five being exchanged between Cambodian and Thai troops centred on Don-aow village in tambon Rung,Kantharalak,near Preah Vihear temple.Several communities on Thai soil were also damaged by artillery shells and at least 12 people were injured and five people were killed.Finally, HunSen claimed in his letter to the UNSC that Thai soldiers had lunched a full-scale offensive against Cambodian soldiers despite the truce agreement following clashes on February 4 and 5.18, On February 7,the border fighting between Thai and Cambodian soldiers ended. The Chong Jom border pass in Karb Choeng was reopened .About 400 shops on the Thai side of the border pass remain closed.Traders removed products from their stores.17 houses were damaged and over 16,600 people, including 8 munks,were evacuated to 40 shelters in 11 districts during the clashes along the border.The clashes also forced 21,720 residents from border villages into 37 makeshift camps.19,On February 14, the UN security called an urgent meeting with Thailand, Cambodia and Indonesia,as the chair of Asean, in NewYork.The hearing began at 10 amNewYork time and took about 90 minutes to discuss four days of fighting near the 11-th-century temple that left at least 10 people dead and injured earlier on February.The UNSC called on Thailand and Cambodia to implement a permanent ceasefire and to resolve their border dispute “peaceful and through effective dialogue” and rejected Cambodias call for UN intervention and peacekeepers to be stationed at the disputed frontier.20,On February 17,Thailand rebuffed a plan by Cambodia to ask the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to send observers to monitor the Shaky ceasefire along the border.The UN ordered its 6 staff to leave the Cambodian province of Kohkong oppsite Trat province because of the border shirmishes.21,On February 21, Thailand Prime Minister denied a ceasefire agreement that was signed with Cambodia.22On February 22, in the Asean foreign ministersmeeting,Indonesia standed ready to send observers to either side of their border dispute.Thailand and Cambodia agreed to invite Indonesia to deploy observers on both sides of the disputed area.Asean also supported Cambodia and Thailand s commitment to avoid futher armed clashes.23, On February 24, two Thai soldiers were injured after stepping on landmines while patrolling Phu MA Khua along the Cambodian border about 4 am.And Cambodian soldiers fired 3 shots in the disputed border area where they trying to expand their presence.While a reporter was taking photographs of Keo Sikha Kiri Savava ,Cambodian soldiers fired 2 warning shots from the pagoda and another from Phu MaKhua. Thai soldiers and the reporter then left the area.24,On March 1.the Thai patriots Network pushed for its 2 members jailed in Cambodia to continue their appeal against their sentencing despite the Foreign Ministry saying they continue their have already put in a request for a royal pardon.Veera Somkwamkid and his secretary sought a royal pardon from Cambodian king Norodom Sihamoni.25, On March 3, Cambodian troops led a group of military attaches from 12 countries from Phnom Penh to visit the temple and The Thailan government was outraged by this action of Cambodia.26, On March 7, it was reported that Thai patriots Network CoorrdinatorVeera was “Critically ill” and there was a little time to appeal against his sentence.And about 750 polices armed with batons and shields early morning removed tents and other structures st up by the Thai patriots Network protesters who encamped on Chamai Maruchet Bridge on Phitsanulok Road in front of Government House.27, On March 8, Veera was taken to see a Cambodian doctor inside the prison who gave him medication until he got better.The Thai embassy staff
