书本知识的局限性The Limitation of Book Knowledge1 Some people may think that the mostimportant task of a student is to learn well what is taught in books, becausebooks are the main source of knowledge. But we often find that a lot ofstudents who work hard on books and get high marks in examinations are not ableto work competently when they once enter into a career. What is the reason, then? It is not the books that are to be blamed. Itis because these students lack the ability to cope with the different practicalproblems arising in their work. They have not learned things beyond the books. Booksare only summaries of what people have acquired in their struggle with thenature and the society. They can never cover all the things and happenings inthe world. Our world is changing so rapidly that not a few books become out-dated as soon as they come out ofthe press. Once we are aware of the limitation of booklearning, we shall see that we should not confine our study to books. We shouldaccumulate our knowledge and ability through practice and keen observation ofthe world.(198 words)发展中国家的健康状况Health Gains in Developing Countries According to the numbers given above, wecan find that in the past thirty years, the life expectancy rose a lot while the infant mortality obviouslydeclined in the developing countries. In 1960, the life expectancy was only 40,but in 1990, it reached to 60. At the same time, the infant mortality decreasedfrom the 20% of the 1960 to 10% of the 1990. We should say that this is a miracle thedeveloping countries made on their way to improve peoples health. The creatingof this miracle may owe to the following reasons. One is because of thedevelopment of these countries economy. This enables the government to investmore money to take care of peoples health. Second is more and more new drugsand advanced medical instruments were produced. A lot of incurable diseasescould be easily controlled under modern technology. Third reason lies in thewide-spread of education. By receiving more education, people in the developingcountries find a lot of scientific ways to keep themselves strong and healthy. We believe that as the development of thewhole world, people in the developing countries will become more and morehealthy. (194 words)Topic 1 孩子的业余活动必须是教育性的 i3 7 K2 ? Z( 1 P* m. I agree that children should make the best use of their spare time, and therefore educational programs should be their first choice when they are free. The first reason is that educational activities, if properly planned and carried out, play a fundamental role in building childrens characters. Children are in the process of forming their outlook of the outside world as of themselves. Children themselves also hope they can contribute to the world and the people when they enter the society. Therefore, it is important for children to do meaningful and valuable things in their spare time such as reading and studying. At the same time, the problem with pursuits such as watching TV and playing video games, although entertaining, is that they do not contribute to childrens exploration of either themselves or the outside world in the process of their growing up. First, they hold that many people, especially in rural areas, are living in poverty. As a result, many children drop out of school and cant afford even the compulsory education. Second, they believe only by further balance and developing our economy can we get rid of poverty and gain the overall prosperity.# $ I$ g/ M8 D% N% r7 w4 NOn the other hand, many people insist that environment protection should be a top priority. First, they claim that we have only one mother earth, if our ecological environment is heavily polluted or ruined, we could not even survive on this planet. Second, they believe, its the rapid and advanced development of economy that leads to the present situation that most parts of the world are polluted. If the problem left unsolved, one day we may have nothing to drink, let alone develop our economy. In my opinion, both economy and environment protection are our urgent tasks now. Without economic development, we should remain backward. Moreover, we might be conquered or bullied by other powerful countries. And without environment protection, we should lose our home. They even regard examinations as an indispensable part of their life. In most schools and colleges, examinations are used as a chief means of deciding whether a student succeeds or fails in a subject. However, although they do the job efficiently, their side effects are also enormous.% H C4 B! h) n5 o5 : _; MExaminations are unable to evaluate ones true ability. They can only test memory or the skill of working rapidly under pressure. Sometimes the future of a candidate may be decided in a single examination. How can one do his best when he is under the extreme pressure? In other words, it does not mean that all of those who get high scores on examinations possess creativity in dealing with various problems. There are many stories that examinations failures turn out to be great scientists or successful entrepreneurs.$ k. N8 % E 5 o: i) |7 Another effect is that examinations encourage bad study habits. Students tend to lay emphasis on the content which will be tested. They are encouraged to memorize rather than to think. Moreover, examinations induce cramming during the exam week. However after the examination, most children forget nearly all the information and facts they stuff into their heads.Examinations lower the standards of teaching as well. They deprive teachers of all freedom. Since teachers themselves are often judged by examination results, they have to train students in exam techniques instead of teaching their subjects. Furthermore, students are required to learn only what teachers tell them.% b8 N# p4 a, F/ 5 P& w; 2 p J% LIn conclusion, even though examinations have been used in the past, they should no longer be used as the only means of evaluation. L1 TWith the arrival of the twenty-first century, knowledge economy age is rapidly approaching, in which new knowledge emerges much faster than ever before. Whats more important, knowledge plays a decisive role in the whole economy. That is why every member of the modern society finds it urgent to renew his knowledge, otherwise he cant be able to keep up with the swift development of the new age. What are the ways to update knowledge? On the one hand, one can attend various courses at all types of schools, either part-time or full-time. On the other hand, however, one can insist on self-study. It is, in a sense, a more convenient and practical method by which one can effectively renew his knowledge. As is well known, the fast development of modern communication devices makes it much easier to receive further education. As far as I am concerned, I have mainly relied on self-taught method in the recent years. I am a professional graduate on duty, so I really cant afford the time spent at school. To meet the urgent needs of my work, I began to learn computer-operating skills and foreign trade chiefly through watching TV educational programs. Compared with the elementary and secondary education, the college education is operating in a quite different system, which covers a great variety of researching fields and involves numerous distinguished professors and projects. In other words, it needs a great sum of money. If this complicated system is supported by the nation without much income from the beneficiaries (the college students), it will exert very heavy pressure on the countrys economy. If the government is unable to invest enough money on university education because of the limited budget, the quality of education will be undermined. In the second place, it is a quite fair practice.
