山西大学附中20132014学年第二学期高一(4月)月考英语试题考试时间:90分钟总分:100分第i卷(共50分)第一节:阅读理解(共30分,每题2分)athe oil resources which are left will not last very long. this means that all vehicles such as cars, trains, buses, planes and ships that need oil to work will not be able to run. so it will be necessary to develop a new system of transport which uses a fuel more than oil. electric vehicles are one possibility. in britain, most families have at least one car and this car is used every day. it could be that only one person in the family drives the car to work or for shopping. the number of cars on the road which are almost empty perhaps helps to explain why the oil is used up so quickly. the family car is a very useful form of transport but it is also a great waste of energy, especially if it is compared with buses or trains. much petrol is used by a car which is traveling at 120 kilometers an hour. clearly, it would be better if there were fewer cars on the road and more speed limits so that the oil which is left will last as long as possible.about 25% of britains total use of energy is domesticit is used only in the home. just over 20% is used for transport. most of the energy is used in industry. it is difficult to suggest any possible energy saving in industry because many of the suggestions would mean that some people would lose their jobs. it is important that industry produces the same amount of products using the same amount of workers.obviously, saving energy is not going to be the answer to the energy crisis. the most it can do is to give more time for a better solution to be found. the more time which is available for new sources of energy to be developed, the better it is because there is still a lot of work to be done in order to find suitable, safe methods of producing energy.1. in britain, what reason could help to explain why oil is used up very quickly?a. people use cars every day. b. most families have at least one car.c. many cars on the road are almost empty. d. electric vehicles are used.2. which of the following is true?a. compared with buses and trains, the family car is useful and can save energy.b. a car driving at the speed of 80 kilometers per hour uses half as much petrol as a car traveling at 160 kilometers per hour.c. it is possible for people to develop vehicles.d. limitation of the number of cars on the road and their speed will help the oil last longer.3. what does the underlined word “domestic” mean in paragraph two?a. for household use. b. on the road. c. slow driving. d. fast driving.4. what is a better way to solve the problem of the energy crisis?a. governments should cut down the number of family cars on the road.b. the speed of vehicles must be limited.c. new sources of energy should be found and developed.d. factories should cut down on production.bit is probably the strangest sport anyone has ever invented. and at first sight, it looks like the easiest. competitors have to do two things. the first is to stand still. the second is to place their hand anywhere on the body of a car, and keep it there.this is where things start getting difficult. lots of other people are doing the same thing. and the winner of the “handathon” contest is the person who can carry on doing it for the longest time. that person gets to own the car.it still seems to be an easy thing to do. at the beginning it is. anyone can stand still. but when the contest has been going for four or five days, standing still seems like the most difficult job in the world. and keeping the hand in place over this time becomes an act of serious attention. after a few days, the hand seems to belong to someone elsesomeone who wants to go home and get some sleep.competitors are allowed to take a five-minute break every hour to eat, drink or do whatever else is necessary. no one is allowed to lean on the car for support. winners need to be able to show great powers of attention. they also need to be able to develop special skills.maybe the popularity of the handathon is due to the fact that it is not necessary to be a trained athlete to enter. entrants in the longview handathon certainly dont seem to do much preparation. most say they will prepare by “getting lots of sleep”. others say they will “eat healthy food” or “pray for success”. the whole event gives ordinary people the chance to do something interesting and win something at the end.handathons are competitions, but there is little rivalry (敌对) between the competitors. they help each other out and keep each others spirits up. people who drop out early return with food, drink and encouragement for those still standing. 5 .the reason why the sport is called “handathon” is probably that _ in the competition.a. people cover a long distance b. people keep hands in place longc. people wave hands as long as possible d. people do the same thing as in marathon 6. what ability is likely to be most needed in handathon?a. standing without any support.b. paying attention to not leaning on the car.c. eating and drinking in five minutes.d. having strong powers of attention7. why is handathon popular? a. someone can win with special training.b. it doesnt need to make any preparation.c. anyone who is interested can join in it.d. people get along well with each other in it.cdear sir, just over six months ago, i saw an advertisement in the morning mail for a set of the complete works of william shakespeare. your company, cosmo books ltd., offered this set (eight books of plays and two books of poetry) at a “remarkable” price: fifteen pounds and fifty pence, including postage and packing. i had wanted a set of shakespeares plays and poems for some time, and these books looked particularly attractive, so i sent for them.two weeks later, the books arrived, together with a set of works of charles dickens which i had not ordered, so i returned the dickens books to you, with a cheque for fifteen pounds and fifty pence for the works of shakespeare. two more weeks passed. then there arrived on my door step a second set of the works of shakespeare, the same set of novels by dickens and a six book set of the plays of moliere, in french. since i do not read french, these were of no use to me at all. however, i could not afford to post all these books back to you, so i wrote to you right away instructing you to come and collect all the books that i did not want, and asking you not to send any other books until further noticeyou did not reply to that letter. instead you sent me a bill for forty two pounds, and a set of the plays of schiller, in german. since then, a new set of books has arrived every two weeks, the works of goethe, the poems of milton, the plays of strindberg; i hardly know what i have. the books are still all in their boxes, in the garage, and my car has to stand in the rain outsideplease send no more books, send no more bills, send no more angry letters demanding payment. just send one large lorry and take all the
