So it is not surprising that there are many expressions about cats. Some cats like to catch small birds, like canaries (金丝雀). If someone looks very proud or satisfied with himself, we say he looks like the cat that eat the canary.Sometimes, a cat likes to play with a small animal it catches. So if you play cat and mouse with someone, you change between different kinds of behavior(行为) when dealing with another person. For example, a child might offer something sweet to his little brother and then take it away when he reaches for it.You may have known that cats spend most of their time sleeping. Sometimes people sleep for a short time during the day. This is called a cat nap.If you tell about something that was supposed to be a secret, we say you let the cat out of the bag. If you are not able to speak or answer a question, someone might ask if the cat has got your tongue.Have you ever watched children in classroom when their teacher leaves for a few minutes? “When the cats away, the mice will play” will best describe that situation. You may have heard this expression: curiosity (好奇心) killed the cat. This means being too concerned about things that are not your business might cause problems. If your home is very small, you might say there is not enough room to swing a cat. But you probably should not try this at home!21. Which can describe a person who is proud to have completed a job successfully? A. The cat has got his tongue. B. He plays cat and mouse with someone. C. He looks like the cat that ate the canary. D. There is not enough room to swing a cat.22. “A cat nap” has something to do with cats _. A. appearance B. living habits C. cleverness D. length of life23. “When the cats away, the mice will play” probably means that _. A. people often behave badly when they are not watched over B. students should be well taught by teachers in school C. students should be afraid of their teachers in class D. people should help each other when they are in troubleBFrench writer Frantz Fanon once said: To speak a language is to take on a world, a culture. Since the world changes every day, so does our language.More than 300 new words and phrases have recently made it into the Oxford Dictionary Online, and in one way or another they are all reflections of todays changing world. After a year that was politically unstable (政治局面不稳定的), its not hard to understand the fact that peoples political views are one of the main drives of our enlarging vocabulary. One example is clicktivism, a compound of click and activism. It refers to armchair activists - people who support a political or social cause, but only show their support from behind a computer or smart phone. We had all the words around Brexit (脱欧) in the last update and we are now starting to see all the words around Trump coming into the dictionary, Angus Stevenson, Oxford Dictionaries head of content development, told The Guardian.Lifestyle is also changing our language. For example, fitspiration - a compound of fit and inspiration - refers to a person or thing that encourages one to exercise and stay fit and healthy. The phrase climate refugee - someone who is forced to leave their home due to climate change - reflects peoples concern for the environment.According to Stevenson, social media was the main source for the new expressions People feel much freer to coin their own words these days. he said. But still, not all newly- invented words get the chance to make their way into a mainstream dictionary. If you want to create your own hit words, Angus Stevenson suggests that you should not only make sure that they are expressive and meaningful, but also have an attractive sound so that people will enjoy saying them out loud.24. Why does the author mention Brexit and Trump?A. To explain the origin of the word clicktivism.B. To show the influences of current affairs on the English language.C. To highlight two major political events that changed the world.D. To explain what kind of new words can make it into a dictionary.25. The underlined word coin in the sixth paragraph probably means _.A. use B. record C. change D. create26. What is the article mainly about?A. New words and phrases into the Oxford Dictionary Online.B. The application of new words and phrases.C. New words and phrases in politics.D. The influence of social media on our language. CIf English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Havent you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language? According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles. The study also found the effect is greater when the younger people learn a second language. A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners. Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference. “Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn. Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (灵活的),” he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.” The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and thirty-four. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.27. The main subject talked about in this passage is _. A. science on learning a second languageB. mans ability of learning a second languageC. that language can help brain powerD. language learning and maths study28. In the second paragraph, the writer mentions “exercise” in order to _.Asay language is also a kind of physical laborBprove that one needs more practice when he (she) is learning a languageCto show the importance of using the language when you learn the languageDmake people believe language learning helps grey matter work well29. The underlined word “bilingual” probably means _. A. a researcher on language learningB. a second language learner C. a person who can speak two languagesD. an active language learner30. In the last two paragraphs, the author wants to tell us that _. A. learning a second language is the same as studying maths B. early learning of a second language helps you a great deal in studying other subjects C. Italian is the best choice for you as a second language D. youd better choose the ages between 2 and 34 to learn a second language 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。A. Then a hand shot up.B. I know that wasnt really the reason.C. And they are placed on outstanding shelves.D. That question was never more troubling.E. Thats why we still need to read him today.F. I already know who it is Ill meet in those novels.G. These are all wonderful reasons to read Dickens.Walk into any bookstore, and you can hardly avoid “bumping into” Charles Dickens.(查理.狄更斯)Many of Dickens works still sell well today. 31 As someone who teaches Dickens, the question of why we still read him is often on my mind. 32 One day nearly 10 years ago, however, when I was giving a lecture, I was telling the students that for Victorian readers, Dickenss writing was a “tune-in-next-week” type of thing that generated crazes. 33 “But why should we still read this stuff?” the student asked. The answer I gave was only acceptable, “Because he teaches you how to think,” I said. The question annoyed me for years, and for years I told myself answers, but never with complete satisfaction. We read Dickens because he is not just a man of his own times, but also a man for our times. We read Dickens because we can learn from experiences of his characters almost as easily as we can learn from our own experiences. 34 But these are not exactly the reason why I read Dickens. My search for an answer continued until one day a text message came from a student of mine. “We still read Dickenss novels,” she wrote, “because they tell us why we are what we are.” Simple as it was, thats the explanation I had sought for years. Dickens shines a light on who we are during the best of times and worst of times. 35 If you have time, go to pick up one of his many novels, read it and enjoy what it has to tell you about yourself.第三部分:语言运用(共两节,满分 45 分)第一节完形填空(共 20 个小题;每小题 1.5 分,满分 30 分)When I was 13 my only purpose was to become the star on our football team.
