Listen to Pauls talk about Louis Braille. Good afternoon, everyone. Today I would like to tell you about a man whose invention has benefited millions of people. His name is Louis Braille and it is mostly because of him that blind people are able to read and write and use computers. Louis was born in 1809, and when he was a little boy he had an accident while playing with his fathers shoemaking tools. By the time he was four years old, he was completely blind. At the age of 10, Louis was lucky enough to be sent to Paris to one of the first schools for the blind. At the school they had special books. They were written in ordinary French but the letters were raised up off the page so that blind people could feel the words and so read with their fingers. But the letters had to be very big and the books were huge and difficult to read. They were also very expensive and the school library had only 14 of them. Louis, who was very clever and creative, thought that there must be a better way for blind people to read. In 1821, when Louis was just 12 years old, a soldier came to visit the school. This man had invented a code for soldiers to send and receive messages in the dark. The idea was that soldiers could push a wire into a piece of paper and then read the message by feeling the raised dots on the other side of the paper. However the code was too difficult for soldiers to learn. Louis took the soldiers idea and began experimenting to make the code simpler. By the time he was 15, he had invented a code that used only six dots. Over the next few years, he continued to improve his code. He also invented codes for reading and writing mathematics and music. Then in l827, the first book in braille was published. However, it took a long time before people realized what a wonderful invention it was. In fact, Louis did not live to see the success of his system because he died in 1852 when he was only 43 years old. Today, the braille system has been adapted to almost every language in the world. Blind and weak-sighted people are able to read and write independently, thanks to Louise Brailles invention. Answer key for Exercise 1:Braille is a system by which blind people can read by feeling raised dots on a page. Answer key for Exercise 2:1 France 2 He was blind. 3 Books were very large because the words were written in the ordinary alphabet but were raised above the surface so blind people could feel the letters. 4 A system of code to be used by soldiers to send and receive messages in the dark. Answer key for Exercise 3:Year Age Event1809Born1813 4 Became completely blind1819 10Sent to school in Pari
