But major earthquakes are less mon. Here are some things to do to prepare for an earthquake and what to do once the ground starts shaking. Safety Tips Have an earthquake readiness plan. Consult a professional to learn how to make your home sturdier, such as fixing bookcases to the wall, using strong locks on cupboards, and fixing the water heater to the wall firmly. Locate a place in each room of the house that you can go to in case of an earthquake. It should be a spot where nothing is likely to fall on you. Keep a supply of canned food, an up-to-date first aid box, 3 gallons(11.4 liters) of water per person, dust masks and goggles(护目镜), and a working battery-operated radio and flashlights. Know how to turn off your gas and water mains. If Shaking Begins Drop down; take cover under a desk or table and hold on. Stay indoors until the shaking stops and youre sure its safe to exit. Stay away from bookcases or furniture that can fall on you. Stay away from windows. In a high-rise building, expect the fire alarms and sprinklers(洒水车) to go off during a quake. If you are in bed, hold on and stay there, protecting your head with a pillow. If you are outdoors, find a clear spot away from buildings, trees, and power lines. Drop to the ground. If you are in a car, slow down and drive to a clear place. Stay in the car until the shaking stops. 56. If the ground is shaking, one is advised to stay _. A. a news report B. a safety handbook C. a mon notice D. a science magazineBThis is an open letter to the three people who stole my handbag from the department store where I am employed as a shop assistant. When you took my bag, I dont know what you thought you were going to get. With my wages, theres not much left on a Tuesday. I hope the 5 was useful to you. I have informed the social security office so you wont be able to cash the child benefit next week. I hope that wont leave you too short, but if you really need a couple of pounds, I suppose you could always cash one of the two checks left in my check book. Of course, I phoned the bank right away and the check-cashing card is no longer valid, so it wont be much use to you. Actually I dont mind about the money too much. We single parents who work to support our families understand only too well what it means to be short of cash. However, I dont suppose it went very far among the three of you. Sorry about that! I wish you had left the bag behind and just taken the wallet and check book. There were all kinds of papers in it, and notes and things that I really need. I really think that was very inconsiderate of you. I mean, how would you like something like that to happen to you?Well, perhaps the bag will turn up. It wasnt even an expensive one, just a plain, old brown leather shoulder bag. You probably dumped it in the nearest rubbish bin or threw it into the bushes. Weve looked around, of course, but no one saw which way you went after you left the shop. Im not really angry with you. I know how the pressures of modern living can affect us, but I am sad at the loss of my personal things. I feel violated and helpless. The police were very icy, and they just shrugged (耸) their shoulders. It happens all the time, they told me. Some small fort, I suppose. But Ive lost just a little more faith in human nature. And as my young son said when I told him what had happened, Why? Mummy, why us? I couldnt answer that question. I wonder if you can.59. In writing Paragraph 2, the writer wants to _.A. tell the thieves hardly any money was availableB. describe the contents of the bag in detailC. give some suggestions to the three thievesD. state the fact that she was careless with the money60. What can we conclude about the police?A. They think the case quite mon. B. They have doubts about human nature. C. They show sympathy for the woman. D. They are unable to find the thieves.61. Why does the author write the letter?A. To give the thieves a serious warning. B. To call peoples attention to their belongings. C. To plain about the fall of morality. D. To express her affection for her valuable bag. CIn meditation (冥想),people sit quietly and focus their attention on their breath. As they breathe in and out, they attend to their feelings. As thoughts go through their minds. they let them go. Breathe. Let go. Breathe. Let go. According to a recent study at the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts, three months of training in this kind of meditation causes a market change in how the brain allocates (分配) attention. It appears that the ability to let go thoughts that e into mind frees the brain to attend to more rapidly changing things and events in the outside world. Expert mediators are better than other people at catching such fast-changing stimuli (刺激), like facial expressions. The study provides evidence for changes in the workings of the brain with mental training. People can learn and improve abilities of all sorts with practice. everything from driving to playing the piano. The study has shown that meditation is good for the brain, It appears to reduce pressure and promote a sense of well-being. In an experiment, 17 volunteers with no meditation experience in the experimental group spent three months meditating 10 to 12 hours a day. A control group also with no meditation experience meditated for 20 minutes a day over the same period. Both groups were then given the tests with two numbers in a group of letters. As both group looked for the numbers, their brain activity was recorded. Everyone could catch the first number. But the brain recordings showed that the less experienced mediators tended to grasp the first number and hang onto it, so they missed the second number. Those with more experience gave less attention to the first number. as if letting it go, which led to an increased ability to grasp the second number, This shows that attention can change with practice. Just ask Daniel Levision, who meditated for three months as part of the study. I am a much better listener, he said. I do not get lost in my own personal reaction to what people are saying.62. The underlined word them in Paragraph 1 refers to _.A. feelings B. thoughtsC. peopleD. minds 63. Meditations manage their daily tasks better because they _.A. are given less pressure B. practice them more frequentlyC. have more stimuli for life D. allocate their attention better 64. In the experiment, volunteers doing meditation for longer hours _.A. usually ignored the first number observed B. were used to memorizing numbers in groups C. were more likely to catch both of the members D. paid more attention to numbers than to letters65. The study proves that _.A. human attention can be trained B. brain activity can be recorded C. meditation improves ones health D. mediators have a good sense of hearingDFor years I have been asked by several people how and why I came to translate a novel by Virginia Woolf in 1945. I graduated from the University of Ankara in 1941 and my four teachers, including Orphan Burian, are members of the Translation Bureau who prepared a list of works to be translated into Turkish and set themselves to translating some of these, besides shouldering the heavy work of correcting or editing the translations submitted to the Bureau. Orphan Burian, now mostly known for his translations of Shakespeare, had started to translate To the Lighthouse for the Translation Bureau, but at the same time he wanted to do something from Shakespeare. So he transferred it to me.For me, To the Lighthouse was love at first sight or rather at first reading. To translate a book, I first read it from the beginning to the end. Then I started writing each sentence by hand. When I finished the whole book I read my translation from the beginning to the end, checking it with the original, and making corrections. Then I typed it, and read the typed copy, making changes again. All in all that added up to five readings. I started translating the novel in 1943 and submitted it to the Bureau in 1944. It was published in 1945 under the general title of “New English Literature” in the series called “Translations from World Literature” known as the “Classical Series”.So, the first book by Virginia Woolf in Turkish appeared in 1945, and it was To the Lighthouse. This was eighteen years after its publication in England in 1927. To me the book itself was pure poetry; I read it as if in a dream. Not trying to dive very deeply into it, I sort of swam on it or over it. Now, years later, I swim in it. Even after so many years, in each reading I bee conscious of new layers of which I havent been aware before. It keeps pace with my experiences in life as years go by, and each reading is a new reading for me.In 1982 and again in 1989 I revised it for two new editions and I again did it sentence by sentence checking it
