Supplementary Reading MIDDLE EASTCROSSROADS OF FAITHAND CONFLICTIts human struggle as tortuous as its landscape, the Middle East has again becomeas in ancient timesa nexus of bitter conflict. Some disputes are battles within nations, as a surging younger generation challenges autocratic regimes for opportunity and political reform. Others pit nation against nation, over issues ranging from weapons proliferation to the proper interpretation of Islam. But none thrown off noise and headlines like the clash of Israelis and Palestinians over the tiny parcels of land on which both peoples have staked their survival. At times peace between them has seemed imminent, but again and again that hope has been shattered by violence, sending shock waves through the region and around the world. Other problems include natural resources. The regions oil fields will not produce forever, forcing oil-rich nations to diversify their economies or face steep decline. The scarcity of that other precious fluid, water, limits development as populations boom. In this land of crisis, followers of the great faiths that were born hereJudaism, Christianity, and Islamhave their work cut out for them.Main Body 1.
