stay with my grandmother for the summer. my mom was extremely nervous about it. she kept telling me how things were different in puerto rico,to always put on sunscreen, not to wander away from my grandmother, and other warnings. she helped me pack and did not leave the airport until she saw my plane take off. but despite her worries, she let me go on my own. as i moved into my teens, she continued to give me space to grow and learn, even when it might have been difficult for her. when i reached my senior year,i decided to move away for college. once again i found that i differed from my peers:while many of them wanted to stay close to home,i couldnt wait to be out in the world on my own. while my mom may not have been happy at the thought of my going away, she was supportive and excited for me. one big thing i realized during my senior year,as my mom granted me more freedom, was that she actually believes in me and trusts me. that means a lot. most of my life, and especially when i was little, the main person i tried to impress in my schoolwork or other things was my mother. i knew she expected nothing but the best from me. sometimes it was hard to live up to her standards;getting a single b on my report card would make me feel bad because i knew she wanted me to have all as. i know that her high standards have helped me stay focused on whats important, like education, and made me who i am. i am thankful for her support and involvement in my life .most of all i respect her. she is the strongest woman i know and thats why i have turned out so strong and independent.8. when the author decided to go to puerto rico, his mother_. awanted to go with him bworried about his safetycdidnt allow him to do so dasked his grandmother for advice9. the author ever before and it may be harmful not only to their physical health, but also to their cognitive (认知的) development.a year-long study, recently published in the sciences, found that elementary school children who were exposed to more green space within or directly outside their school showed improved learning and memory. the findings reinforce (加强) that of a recent six-year study on 905 massachusetts public elementary schools, which found that students in schools that had more “greenness” in their surroundings reported higher scores on standardized testing in english and math. “there is an expanding body of scientific evidence linking the human experience in the natural world to better physical and mental health and improved cognitive abilities,” journalist richard louv, co-founder of the children & nature network, said in an email to the huffington post. “an increasing number of homeschoolers, nature preschools, independent primary and secondary schools, and forward-thinking public schools are incorporating (并入) nature experience into learning.”the new study was conducted on more than 2,500 children in second, third and fourth grade at 36 primary schools in barcelona, spain. researchers found that the students who attended schools with more green space showed a 5 percent improvement in the short-term memory thats critical for reasoning, learning and comprehension. but their inattentiveness decreased slightly.spending time outside could have a number of benefits for children beyond improved memory and attention. another recent study found that adventurous outdoor play such as climbing, rough and tumble (翻筋斗) play, and exploring alone improves childrens physical health while also help them develop creativity and social skills greatly.some schools are starting to take notice, creating more space for children to enjoy being in nature, including community gardens, outdoor playgrounds and small parks.12. what did the study lasting a year joke that was popular at the time went something like this: a man is stuck up to his waist in a muddy chicago street. asked if he needs help, he replies, no, thanks. ive got a good horse under me. the city planner decided to build an underground drainage (排水) system, but there simply wasnt enough difference between the height of the ground level and the water level. the only two options were to lower the chicago river or raise the city. an engineer named ellis chesbrough convinced me the city that it had no choice but to build the pipes above ground and then cover them with dirt. this raised the level of the citys streets by as much as 12 feet. this of course created a new problem: dirt practically buried the first floors of every building in chicago. building owners were faced with a choice: either change the first floors of their buildings into basements, and the second stories into main floors, or hoist the entire buildings to meet the new street level. small wood-frame buildings could be lifted fairly easily. but what about large, heavy structures like tremont hotel, which was a six-story brick building? thats where george pullman came in. he had developed some house-moving skills successfully. to lift a big structure like the tremont hotel, pullman would place thousands of jackscrews (螺旋千斤顶) beneath the buildings foundation. one man was assigned to operate each section of roughly 10 jackscrews. at pullmans signal each man turned his jackscrew the same amount at the same time, thereby raising the building slowly and evenly. astonishingly, the tremont hotel stay open during the entire operation, and many of its guests didnt even notice anything was happening. some people like to say that every problem has a solution. but in chicagos early history, every engineering solution seemed to create a new problem. now that chicagos waste water was draining efficiently into the chicago river, the citys next step was to clean the polluted river.16. the
