Internship ReportJustin (XXX)BME 2012 Student Number:XXXXXXCompany: XXXXXXXFrom: 2016.7.11 to 2016.11.30PrefaceThe internship in DTZ is a new adventure for me, which has changed my daily life and view of the world. During the last three months, I experienced a new way of living and working, and learned many things I could not get at school. This report is summary of my working experience as an intern in DTZ and starts with how I joined the company.InterviewIt is much harder to find a job or internship in Chengdu. That is my first impression on the talent market of Chengdu after I came back home from Beijing. However, I was really lucky and got the phone interview after I sent just 5 or 6 resumes, and HR of DTZ told me to attend to the interview next Wednesday. In fact, that was my first interview ever and I found it quite exciting during the process of preparation. I did a lot of work and focused on two aspects: the background of the company and knowledge of my own major, Biomedical English. I read through the history of the company and learned some useful information. DTZ is a consulting firm dealing mainly with real estate and industry research. DTZ has a long history and one of its component firms can date back to 18th century. Now, the business in China is essential part of the company, and the Chengdu branch is an important branch firm since it is near to the headquarters in Hong Kong. The information I got helped me make up my mind to get the internship. Then I started to gather information about medicine industry. I concentrated on the medical reform in China and how a pharmaceutical company makes profits. With proper preparation, I passed the interview on Wednesday and got the offer. A new life has begun.Overview of daily life The work as an intern in a foreign company is never boring. Although my efficiency is fairly high, the task is endless. Luckily, I do like the atmosphere of the company, which is more like a school than a profit-oriented company. The average age of the staff is 27, and it is hard to imagine that many major projects are designed by those people under 30. Thanks to the friendly atmosphere, I found it easy to fit in with the new environment and therefore I could concentrate on my work. The daily work in a consulting company is anything but the same thing. Every single project needs a different prospective and an innovative way of breakthrough. However, the basic principles are kept in mind by all staff and some are quite cruel. In brief, DTZ is a relaxing place in which people conduct serious work. When it comes to foreign company, people always think of mounting pressure and serious management, but I have felt different since I entered one. As far as I can see, DTZ is in fact a typical firm with flexible work schedule. A project is completed by a cooperating team and people get paid based on the number of projects finished. It is indeed a good system to simulate passion of staff. I observed some state-owned companies and I found it hard to create an efficient atmosphere there. As a student of Biomedical English with a double major of economics, my experience in DTZ makes me believe that consulting is an ideal job for students of BME, the reason is as follows:First, consulting does not need professional skills severely like other industries, such as IT or counting. Students of BME always complain that we do not have a strong skill to make a living, and what we got at school is background education, which turns out surprisingly suitable for a consultant. In DTZ we have to deal with different projects that requires different knowledge and skills. We do not need to master the technological skills but we must know something about everything. BME has given us a variety of courses including chemistry, law, philosophy, mythology, anthropology and so on, and these courses can provide a starting point when we want to deeply study a field. With some related knowledge, we would not panic when entering an unfamiliar world.Second, English is important for a consultant. My internship in DTZ made me realize that English is more than a tool for communication, but a door for massive information. Quite a lot of good-quality resources are written in English and mastering English means to own those resources, especially in the field of science. My first project in DTZ was Chengdu Science City, and I had to gather information of advanced materials and advanced medicine. Almost all good-quality papers in these two fields are written in English, and I gained attention of the company due to this project. Two weeks later, our team started to deal with a project in Ethiopia and the client requires an English version of report. I was asked to translate all those reports in two weeks. It was a difficult job for a student who just passed TEM-8, and I will talk about it later in detail, but the training I got at school dose help during my dark days.Job huntingAs is mentioned above, there are few job choices in Chengdu, so I have to think about my career early or I have to face the cruel fact that I will become unemployed. I have decided to work after graduation and I will choose Chengdu to develop due to some personal factors. DTZ has given me a good impression and I had the intention to stay here to work. Considering various factors such as wages, pressure, content of work and so on, I believed that it is a company worth working for. Then the remaining question was how to persuade the boss to keep me here. As far as I knew, the Bachelor degree does not meet the companys basic requirement, and I was at a disadvantage in the first place on this matter. I was trying to work hard and make people in the department believe that I was working hard. After 3 months preparation, I thought it was time to have a talk with my boss.I stood up and walked to him, “Mars, I think I should have a talk with you.”“Fine, lets go to the meeting room.”We sat in the large meeting room, I felt mounting pressure and I had to start talking before I felt nervous.“My internship contract will expire next week and I wanted to know that if I have a chance to stay here as one of the formal staff.”“Okay, you can express your feelings and thoughts first,” Mars replied, “how do you find this firm?”“I think the atmosphere of our company is quite good, since the average age of staff is 27 or 28, and people including you, the leader, are very friendly. I have experienced all aspects of our business during the last three months and I believe that I am competent for a position in this company.”Then I talked in detail about my experience in PKU and the reason why I wanted to work in Chengdu after graduate.I thought I had kept speaking for 10 minutes and finally I closed my case. My boss smiled, “Good, you can have a position in DTZ.”I was very relaxed that day.Since then, I was treated as a management trainee in the company and given more chance to experience all kinds of work.My major v. s. DTZI came back to Chengdu, looked for an internship and joined DTZ, and I expected to put what I have learned into use. During the last four months, I was excited to find that BME had prepared for many kinds of work and what the teachers had taught me could help me work smoothly in a foreign company. The second project I did in DTZ was an overseas project in Ethiopia, and I was told to translate the whole report. 200 slides in two weeks, I was pushed to become a real estate worker in very short time. I used to do translation at school, but things were different when I did it in company. Work and homework were very different. I had to become result-oriented. Honestly, I knew nothing about real estate then, and I checked every strange concept on the internet to make sure I would not make some low-end mistakes. I translated slowly, but I learned quickly. By solving various questions, I thought I was no longer a layman in this field. Moreover, I was excited that my major could actually help me complete a program in a totally new area. English is just a tool, I have been told for many times, I thought it true. However, English is an essential tool that can connect two cultures and help an intern become distinguished from others. Apart from translation, as a tool, English is vital in searching information. When doing industry analysis, we would often read a great deal of materials in English. Since over 80% of knowledge in the world is recorded by English, this language is in fact a door to a new world full of unknown things. As far as I am concerned, English level is most important for a student who just leave the school and join a foreign company. Many skills of a person cannot be judged until people know him very well, but the English level is a sign of the education one has received. I am very grateful that BME has given me adequate education about English, and that is just 50% of the content my major, the other half, medical knowledge also helped me a lot during my internship. At present, elderly care industry is the current heated issue, and the real estate field has also followed the trend and many real estate program with medical service and elderly care have appeared over last 5 years. When I first dealt with my work in this real estate related company, I thought my medical knowledge would be of no value. However, I gradually found that my medical background did help me a lot in my work. One day, my director asked me to translate a speech draft about elderly care industry in one hour. Thanks to my cross-subject major, I did it in 30 minutes. My efficiency surprised my director, which might have added scores for me when he considered firing me as a former worker. The last program in 2016 was about designing a comprehensive hospital in Kunming, in which I really contributed a lot due to my medical education. Although the medical education I received was not very deep and professional, but it was adequate to deal with many basic problems. At least, I could help the team avoid many low-end mistakes. The whole program consisted of four chapters and I almost finished three chapters by myself. When doing this project, my understanding was very different from others due to my medical student identity, and I was luckily that my team leader trusted my medical background and chose to trust my ideas. In the past, we sometimes complained that BME had given us nothing but a tool and a background education. However, in the suitable environment, I believed that our major can help us become outstanding. After all, the two skills, medicine and English, this strange combination could make us distinguished in any situation.Economics v. s. DTZEconomics is my second major, it is the key when I fit in with this company. In this company, background of economics did matter. We would deal with much data, and more importantly, we had to explain data and predict. Thanks to my double major, I did not panic facing so much data and models. On the other hand, our work involves telling stories. Based on research and statistics, we had to tell a reasonable story to the government or the real estate developer. Economics itself combines two aspects of skills, the science and the art, so it does make me fit in with the environment smoothly. As a student of Biomedical English, I am very happy that we could apply the second major more easily. When I return to Beijing, I will continue to study economics in PKU even though my credits are enough to graduate. Many skills are very useful in work such as liner analysis and predictions. I will listen to those lessons that I believe will benefit me a lot in the future and make me more component in this company. ConclusionMy internship is not over yet. In fact, my internship has gradually transferred to a former working experience. What I do is just the same as former workers. On the whole, I think my education in Biomedical English and my double major have given me a chance to work in a good company. I am very grateful. Facing many challenging tasks, my previous experience could help me out and make me confident. I was excited that I left the college and entered society. Things are very different, but and I believed that I have the power to make a living in this company. I would not regret that I gave up the chance to get further education. Perhaps I will get a higher degree after several years work. There is no need to write down every detail in my work, because what I gained during last 4 months cannot
