Very old people do raise moral problems for almost everyone who comes into contact with them. Their valuesthis cant be repeated too oftenare not necessarily our values. Physical comfort, cleanness and order are not necessarily the most important things for the very old people. The social services from time to time find themselves faced with a flat with decaying food covered by small worms, and an old person lying alone on bed, taking no notice of the worms. Is it interfering with personal freedom to insist that they go to live with .some of their relatives so that they might be taken better care of? Some social workers, the ones who clear up the worms, think we are in danger of carrying this concept of personal freedom to the point where serious risks are being taken with the health and safety of the old. Indeed, the old can be easily hurt or harmed. The body is like a car: it needs more mechanical maintenance as it gets older. You can carry this comparison right through to the provision of spare parts. Never forget that such operations are painful experience, however good the results. At what point should you cease to treat the old body? Is it morally right to try to push off death by pursuing the development of drugs to excite the forgetful old mind and to activate (使.活动) the old body, knowing that it is designed to die? You cannot ask doctors or scientists to decide, because so long as they can see the technical opportunities, they will feel bound to give them a try on the principle that while theres life, theres hope. When you talk to old people, however, you are forced to the conclusion that whether age is happy or unpleasant depends less on money or on health than it does on your ability to have fun. 36. It is implied in Para. I that . A) very old people enjoy living with their relatives B) social services have nothing to do with the very old people C) some old people like to live alone to have more personal freedom D) no one is willing to take care of very old people 37. Some social workers think that . A) health and safety are more important than personal freedom B) personal freedom is more important than health and safety C) old people should keep their rooms clean D) one should not take risks of dealing with old people 38. The comparison of a body and a car means . A) the human body cant be compared to a car B) the older a person is the more care he needs C) too much emphasis has been put on the old peoples values D) it is easy to provide spare parts for the old people 39. The word it (Line 2, Para. 3) refers to . A) the conclusion you have come to B) your talk to the old people C) whether age is happy or unpleasant D) ones money or ones health 40. The author probably agrees that . A) medical care for old people should be left to the doctors B) old people enjoy a happy life only if they are rich C) the opinion that we should try every possible means to save old people is doubtful D) it is always morally right to treat old people and push off death Task 2 Directions: This task is the same as Task 1. The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 41 to 45. For years and years people have been saying that the railways arc dead. We can do without railways, people say, as if motorcars and planes have made the railways unnecessary. We all keep hearing that trains are slow, that they lose money, and that they are dying. But this is far from the truth. In those days of expensive oil, the railways have become highly competitive with motorcars and planes. If you want to carry people or goods from place to place, they are cheaper than planes. And they have much in common with planes. A plane goes in a straight line and so does a railway. What is more, it takes from the heart of a city into the heart of another. It doesnt leave you as a plane does, miles and miles from the city center. It doesnt hold you up as a car does, in endless traffic jams. And a single train can carry goods which a plane or motorcar could never do. Far from being dead, the railways are very much alive. Modern railway lines give you a smooth, untroubled journey. Where else can you eat well, sleep in comfort, feel safe and enjoy the scene while you are traveling at speed at the same time? And we are only at the beginning. For we have just entered the age of super fast trains, trains traveling at 150 miles an hour and more. Soon we will be wondering why we spent so much on motorcars we cant use because we have not enough money to buy the oil and planes we cant fly for the same reason. 41. Some people think the railways are unnecessary because . A) planes and motorcars have taken the place of trains B) oil is expensive today C) trains are super fast D) railways earn a large amount of money 42. According to the writer, it seems that . A) we can do without railways B) trains have much in common with motorcars and planes C) motorcars and planes are not as good as trains D) trains are as good as motorcars and planes 43. It is implied by the writer that . A) it is cheaper to travel by plane than by train B) the railway station is usually in the suburb of the city C) when you get off the plane you will find yourself in the center of the city D) no motorcar or plane can carry as much goods as a train does 44. The writer thinks that the railways are very much alive because . A) we can have a troubled journey B) we have enough money to fly in planes C) we can now travel by super fast trains D) we can travel by motorcars as well 45. The best title for this passage may be . A) Not the End But the Beginning B) Which Is the Best: Train, Motorcar or Plane? BP is one of Britains biggest companies and one of the worlds largest oil and petrochemicals (石油化工产品) groups. BP owes its origin to one man, William Knox DArey, who, shortly after the turn of the twentieth century, invested time, money and labour in the belief that worthwhile deposits of oil could be found in Persia. In the companys first six decades, its prime focus lay in the Middle East. But from the late 1960s the centre of gravity shifted westwards, towards the USA and Britain itself. However, the BP of today is an international company, having operations in over 70 countries. Its key strengths are in oil and gas exploration and production the refining, marketing and supply of petroleum product (石油产品); and the manufacturing and marketing of chemicals. It supports all its businesses with high quality research and technology. The following pages chronicle (记录) the development of the company from its early days through to the present. However, to do justice to a story as complex as BPs would require more than these few pages. This brief account covers only some of the principal milestones along the road from BPs beginnings in Persia to its current position as one of the worlds leading companies.Bps Profile Founder: (46) Prime focus in its first six decades: (47) Key Strength: 1. the exploration and production of (48) 2. the refinement and distribution of petroleum products 3. the production and distribution of (49) Content of the following web page: a brief record of the (50) of the company from its beginning to the present Task 4 Directions: The following is a list of terms of movies.
