years. some of these people made a great impact on my life, my views and personal philosophy. others i met had the opposite effect because they represented attitudes, behavior and beliefs that were directly opposed to my views on life and my feelings about the value of all people.one such person i met was a woman in her late seventies. she had been an active woman, raised a family and had engaged in helping others, and developed her own crafts to sell at selected craft shows throughout the year.when i met her for the first time, i couldnt believe that she was in her late seventiesi would have placed her age more in her early sixties. after speaking with her for a short period, it was only then that the conversation seemed to turn to age. and, it wasnt a conversation about the frailty(脆弱) of age, or the aches and pains, or about pleasures lost.the conversation, instead, focused on her zest for life and all the things that she was in the planning stages of doing. and, what she was planning to do wasnt about going to a seniors group so she and her husband could go on a bus tour. what she was planning was an excursion(旅行) to europe, unaccompanied by any tour operator or taken around the usual sights by a local guide.she really impressed me a lot because of her zest for life; for an uncompromising view of the future not in the least affected by her age; for the undying faith in knowing that there was a great deal of life yet to be discovered and experienced and yearning for each new image, discussion, smell, cultural uniqueness or experience.16from the text for the slowest crossing, set by henry sullivan at 26 hours and 50 minutes, has stood for 87 years before mrs.cobell started at dover saturday morning.she had struggled through changing tides that swept her first one way, then the other.it turned the 21mile crossing into a 65mile one.she declared,“time and tide wait for no manand they certainly didnt wait for me.i was fully expecting it to get dark before i got to calais but i never imagined id also see the dawn again.but i wasnt going to give up.”her feat(壮举) raised more than $2,000 in charity sponsorship for research into huntingdons disease,a sum that was continuing to grow as news of her achievement spread.that was why she did it.“i dont really know myself,” she said.“i just kept thinking of all the people id be letting down if i stopped.”mrs.cobell took to the water so well at school.but after bringing up two daughters, she started to gain weight.five years ago she took up swimming again and decided to prepare for the channel challenge to lose weight.she became much fitter.then came the big swim.“i practiced on windermere lake,” she said.“its about half the distance of the channel so i just doubled it,added some extra time, and worked out i could probably get to calais in about 16 hours.”her husband david, trainer, official observer and friend sailed alongside her on a boat.she said,“i sang to keep myself going.when picnic. place faith in sb. rely on依靠;break away from挣脱;keep ones hands off不要管,不要碰。 make a difference起作用;in health身体好,身体健康。 put pressure on sb.(to do sth.)“给某人施压;强迫、促使或劝说某人(做某事)”。 there is no doubt that是固定句式,that引导的是同位语从句。 而be devoted to意为“专心于;致力于”;refer to意为“提到,涉及”;direct to意为“指向”。 从they have earned lots of money可知,“我”坚信(firmly believe)生意是成功的。 根据第四段“the conversation, instead, focused on her zest for life and all the things that she was in the planning stages of doing.”以及最后一段“she really impressed me a lot because of her zest for life”可知。 根据倒数第二段“mrs cobell took to the water so well at school.” 根据第一段“ set off for calais. the time was 6:40am.28 hours and 44 minutes later”和“mrs. cobell started at dover saturday morning”可判断。 根据第二段“she had struggled through changing tides that swept her first one way, then the other.” 根据第三段“her feat (壮举) raised more than $2,000 in charity sponsorship”和“that was why she did it.” 根据末段“but maybe next time i might be a bit quicker.” .one possible version:dear sir/madam,my name is li hua. i would like to work as a volunteer for the winter asian games.i am a girl of 18. as a college 课后阅读-in the public interest 为了公众的利益the scandinavian countries are much admired all over the world for their enlightened social policies. sweden has evolved an excellent system for protecting the individual citizen from high-handed or incompetent public officers. the system has worked so well, that it has been adopted in other countries too. the swedes were the first to recognize that public officials like civil servants, police officers, health inspectors or tax-collectors can make mistakes or act over-zealously in the belief that they are serving the public. as long ago as 1809, the swedish parliament introduced a scheme to safeguard the interest of the individual. a parliamentary committee representing all political parties appoints a person who is suitably qualified to investigate private grievances against the state. the official title of the person is justiteombudsman, but the swedes commonly refer to him as the j. o. or ombudsman. the ombudsman is not subject to political pressure. he investigates complaints large and small that come to him from all levels of society. as complaints must be made in writing, the ombudsman receives an average of 1, 200 letters a year. he has eight lawyer assistants to help him and he examines every single letter in detail. there is nothing secretive about the ombudsmans work, for his correspondence is open to public inspection. if a citizens complaint is justified, the ombudsman will act on his behalf. the action he takes varies according to the nature of the complaint. he may gently reprimand an official or even suggest to parliament that a law be altered. the following case is a typical example of the ombudsmans work. a foreigner living in a swedish village wrote to the ombudsman complaining that he had been ill-treated by the police, simply because he was a foreigner. the ombudsman immediately wrote to the chief of police in the district asking him to send a record of the case. there was nothing in the record to show that the foreigners complaint was justified and the c
