千里之行，始于足下。The Most Useful ThingDuring this summer vacation, something good happened to me. Four dear American friends came to our city, Chu Zhou, bringing their knowledge, happiness and kindness to us English teachers in this small beautiful city. Its a great honor to be a student of them.We have stayed together with them for about three weeks, during which time we all studied effectively and got along well with each other. The four friends are so friendly and helpful that we all feel at ease with them.In these three weeks, I learnt many certain kinds of knowledge, such as, American money, marriage, press, pollutions, health, Christmas, Easter, Thanks Giving, the rules of playing baseball, the Bible stories, the effective ways of teach English, many kinds of food and animals, many pieces of sweet songs and interesting games. Also, I learnt how to live peacefully and happily side by side with people who come from different culture and custom. The most important thing is to respect each other and then try to understand each other.All of these are what I have learnt in these days. And the most useful thing that I learnt is this: If you want others do something first, you first. You may wonder what the meaning is. I will get it across by the following sentences.Love your neighbors, love yourself.If you want to be loved, you should make yourself lovely first.Treat others the way you want to be treated.If you want to be a good teacher, you should be a good learner first. So I think I can explain it in this way. As a teacher, I should always respect and love my students. I should always have confidence in them. I should be responsible for them. I would like myself be the sunshine in their heart to guide and warm them in their lives. This is the most valuable thing that I learnt in these three weeks. An unforgettable moment On the afternoon of July 7, I was asked to have an English oral test in room 306. When it was my turn, I entered the classroom, where I first met Peggy. She asked my name and my family first. Then she asked me to read some sentences. Later, she asked me a question: Do you love your students, love teaching?The answer is yes. “My students are young boys and young girls, who are in their late teens. They are desire for knowledge. They are diligent, brilliant and creative.She listened carefully with her beautiful blue eyes staring at me, adding that: Dont you think your students keep you young. It is the very thing that I remembered best. And I will bear her words in my mind. I will try my best to be a good English learner and make my classes more interesting and challenging. I will love them as I love myself. In a word, I expect myself to be a good teacher as you Peggy are.My Suggestions on This ProgramThis program, which is intended to benefit us, the small city teachers, worked out quite good. Many thanks to you, our dear American friends. You devoted your valuable time and energy. Your enthusiasm aroused our deep interest in learning different culture and languages. Thank you very much! Now I will present my own ideas on this program.- More speeches to be delivered This program has too many interactive activities between teacher and students, students and students. In this kind of program, I think, there should be more input but less output for students. After all, we are the men whose mother tongue is Chinese while English is just our second language. We are major in the English language, but the fact is that most of us dont really good at English and English communication. We need to practice our oral English, which is in deed. But how can we express ourselves freely and correctly without building up more knowledge about English and its history and culture. This is really a great problem. In my opinion, more speeches on certain topics are needed badly. Peggys classes on how to teach English well and Lorettas topics on marriage, Christmas, press and health are all good ones. - Less classes a day Its really a difficult job for four dear American friends to give four classes continuously in such hot summer, especially for Richard.J To me, giving two or three classes without stop will make my throats burning and my shoulders and arms too heavy to move. If I were in charge of this program, I would arrange less classes per day for you. In these three weeks, you all do a good job. My eyes are full of your bright smiles and my ears are filled in your warm greetings. Thank you for all that you have done for us. You are good examples for me to follow, especially you Peggy and Loretta. As a matter of fact, I really enjoy these classes, the more the better. - Several young teachers It would be better if several young teachers participated in this program. But it is all right without them, because Peggy is younger than anyone else, isnt she? J She is so lovely and smart that everyone loves her.
