课时练(二)阅读理解提速练(练速度)(限时:35分钟).阅读理解a(2016海口高三第一次模拟)raised in a motherless home, my father was extremely tightfisted towards us children. his attitude didnt soften as i grew into adulthood and went to college. i had to ride the bus whenever i came home. though the bus stopped about two miles from home, dad never met me, even in severe weather. if i grumbled,_hed say in his loudest fathervoice,“thats what your legs are for!”the walk didnt bother me as much as the fear of walking alone along the highway and country roads. i also felt less than valued that my father didnt seem concerned about my safety. but that feeling was canceled one spring evening.it had been a particularly difficult week at college after long hours in labs. i longed for home. when the bus reached the stop, i stepped off and dragged my suitcase to begin the long journey home.a row of hedges (树篱) edged the driveway that climbed the hill to our house. once i had turned off the highway to start the last lap of my journey, i always had a sense of relief to see the hedges because it meant that i was almost home. on that particular evening, the hedges had just come into view when i saw something gray moving along the top of the hedges, moving toward the house. upon closer observation, i realized it was the top of my fathers head. then i knew, each time id come home, he had stood behind the hedges, watching, until he knew i had arrived safely. i swallowed hard against the tears. he did care, after all.on later visits, that spot of gray became my watchtower. i could hardly wait until i was close enough to watch for its secret movement above the greenery. upon reaching home, i would find my father sitting innocently in his chair.“so, my son, its you!” hed say, his face lengthening into pretended surprise.i replied,“yes, dad, its me. im home.”语篇解读:本文是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了父亲从小对作者严格要求,从来不曾到车站接过他。但是,在一个春天的晚上,作者偶然发现父亲在默默地关心着他。1what does the underlined word “grumbled” in paragraph 1 probably knowing their cousins, aunts and uncles, grandparents, and other relatives. these children felt connected.in these nottoolongago times people were connected to their food. most people grew their own vegetables and fruit. many families had a house cow for milk, cheese, butter and cream. most families also had meat animals. when visitors came unexpectedly, dad would be sent out back to kill the chicken for dinner. everyone was involved in cooking and mealtimes were a social event. when the meal ended, most of the family were involved in cleaning up and washing up. how different is the situation today?the fast life is all around us fast food, fast cars, fast conversations, fast families, fast holidays. our fast paced life has weakened these connections. we have been fooled into thinking we need to, or even must, be fast and have what the “fast life” gives us. stress is leading to many new health problems.the solution is the slow movement. it aims to deal with the problem of “time poverty” through making connections. it supports a growing cultural shift towards slowing down. it has spread to more than sixty countries and become a worldwide movement.the slow movement tells us that we need to slow down and connect with our life. we need connection to people ourselves, our family, our community, our friends to food, to places (where we live), and to life. by being part of the slow movement, many people have known how they lost connection to most aspects of their life and to the natural world and rhythms around them. and more importantly, they have reconnected they have lived a new connected lifestyle. 4if we are connected to our food, we_.aeat each meal slowlybbuy our limit?many old people work well into their 70s and 80s, running families, countries or corporations. other people, however, despite being fit and highly talented, are forced to retire in their fifties or even earlier because of the regulations of a company or the nation. this essay will examine whether people should be allowed to continue working as long as they want or whether they should be encouraged to retire at a particular stage.some people think there are several arguments for allowing older people to continue working as long as they are able. first of all, older employees have a large amount of knowledge and experience which can be lost to a business or organization if they are made to retire. a second point is that older employees are often extremely loyal employees and are more willing to carry out company policies than younger less committed staff. however, a more important point is regarding the attitudes in society to old people. to force someone to resign or retire at 60 indicates that the society does not value the input of these people and that their useful life is over. age is irrelevant to a working life, surely if older employees are told they cannot work after 60, this is age discrimination. that they become old does not necessarily mean they are going to be sick. old people could be more aware, experienced and committed than some youngsters.others, however, think that allowing older people to work indefinitely is not a good policy. age alone is no guarantee of ability. old people are only ambitious workaholics who are too selfish and selfcentered to believe that a younger person could do better. actually, many younger employees have more experience or skills than older staff, who may have been stuck in one area or unit for most of their working lives. having compulsory retirement allows new ideas in an organization. in addition, without age limits, however, many people would continue to work purely because they did not have any other plans or roles. a third point of view is that older people should be rewarded by society for their lifes labor by being given generous pensions and the freedom to enjoy their leisure. we now have youngsters who cant find jobs because old people are choosing not to retire. old people are not retiring because this new generation of “old people” think they will never die due to modern advances in medicine.with many young people unemployed or frustrated in lowlevel positions, there are often calls to compulsorily retire older workers. however, this can affect the older individuals freedom and right to work and can deprive (剥夺) society of valuable experience and insights. i feel that giving workers more flexibility and choice over their retirement age will benefit society and the individual.语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了人们对于国家是否有必要限制退休年龄的看法。8what is the purpose of this passage?ato explain the compulsory age limit.bto discuss the retirement age.cto examine peoples working life.dto should receive some special recognition for dedicated (敬业的) community service. the person i recommend is elizabeth samuelson. i believe you know her in your position as volunteer coordinator (协调员)i have known elizabeth for more than 20 years as both a friend and a neighbor. during that time i have seen her work tirelessly on scores of community projects and committees. as far as i know, she has never received any kind of recognition from the community for her work. i believe she should be given some sort of special recognition.just last year alone, she worked on at least six different community projects including the park renewal project and the heritage homes fundraising banquet. in addition, she is a weekly driver for the mealsonwheels program and she visits patients in the care unit on a regular basis. whenever a project or committee needs her, she will put herself into the work wholeheartedly. im sure that if you check with a few of your staff members who have been there over the years, they will confirm elizabeths community service record and probably be able to add many examples to the few i have given here. by the way, elizabeth has no idea that i am writing this. she is a humble (谦虚的) person, and if she were aware of it, she would not allow me to send it.i thought about writing such a letter about her a number of times in the past but just never took action. then last week, i noticed in the paper that you sponsor (主办) an annual dinner at which dozens of awards are given out to people with much less community service than elizabeth. in fact, i checked with
