The main task (Outcome)The students will be able to write a poem to the one they think knows them best. The main purpose of this period is to help students learn to read and write poems.2. Language focus1) The students will be able to know the meanings of the following words and phrases: stay by ones side; make sure; keep sb. from ; give sb. a hug; lift sb. up; talk back; think back.2) The students will be able to know some features of a poem: stanza, the same sentence pattern, rhyme.Language is not the focus of this class, so the vocabulary will be taught while reading with the help of the context and pictures.To better learn a poem, it is necessary to help students know some features of poems.3. Language skills and goals 1) The students will be able to appreciate a poem by reading aloud.2) The students will be able to write a poem after reading the poem in the book. In a poem-reading class, reading aloud is necessary and essential for understanding.4. Learning StrategiesThe students will be encouraged to have a role-play and have critical thinking through think-pair-share.Role-play helps students feel how the writer feels; critical thinking calls for personal understanding. 5. Affection1) The students will be able to feel the beauty of English poems; 2) The students will be able to feel the love around them and learn to be thankful.The ability and awareness to feel the love around the students is important. Its much better if they can fall in love with poems.Teaching focus and difficultiesIt is the first time for students to learn an English poem, so the form of a poem is totally new. T should guide students to know the form step by step while understanding the content. Besides, for poem reading, reading for appreciation plays a more important role than reading for information and strategies. Enjoy the music and pictures.2. Read a doggerel together.3. Think back to the old time and share memories of Mom.1. The pictures are used to activate students memories of Mom and themselves.2. The doggerel is meant to lead in the topic briefly. 3. Free talk is designed to focus students attention on the topic of Moms love.II. While-reading activities Part one: fast reading1. Ask students to read with the two questions:(1)What is the theme of this poem?(2)How many stanzas does this poem have? In what order does this poem go? 2. Ask students to find out the features of this poem.1. Read the poem fast and find the answers.2. Read again and find out the features.The first reading is mainly for a basic understanding of the theme and the form.(诗的初体验)Part two: careful reading1. Ask students to match different ages with different feelings.A tiny baby (enjoyed Moms care) A child/a teen (misunderstood Mom)An adult (understands Mom)2. Guide students to find the words/phrases which show Moms care.3. Lead students to have a role-play.4. Guide students to find out the writers feelings by filling the blanks. 1. Read and match.2. Ask students to listen to the tape while paying attention to the tips: the stress (重音) the stops (停顿) the intonation(语调) the tone(语气)2. Ask students to read the poem with the tape 3. Ask students to read by themselves.4. Ask some of them to read in front of class. 1. Listen to the tape, pay attention to the tips and make some marks.2. Read with the tape.3. Read a favorite stanza.Appreciating through reading is a necessary way in reading a beautiful poem. (诗的深感受)III. Post-reading activitiesPart one: critical thinkingAsk students think-pair-share the two topics:(1) What does the title mean?(2) Who else around you knows best?Think about the two topics and share with classmates.It is a transitional activity, ending the understanding of the poem on the book and activating the thinking for the follow-up activity. Part two: writing1. Guide students to write a poem to the one they think knows them best. 2. Sharing with the whole class.Write a poem to the one they think knows them best. Share.Writing is an extension of reading. (诗的亲体验)Part three: sharing Share a little English poem with students. Read the poem.Starting with a doggerel, its a good choice to end the poem-reading class with another little poem. IV. Homework 1. Oral: Read the poem again, appreciate
