Learn to use different reading strategies like skimming and scanning.Moral objective:Help students to realize the importance of life and making good decisions through the story of Aron Ralston.Teaching procedures:Step I: Leading-in and fast-reading(skimming)Greet the students and tell them that I feel tired to run to the classroom. Ask if they do sports every day and lead in a person who likes doing sports very much. Ask students if they would like to meet the man. Then let them watch a video clip of him and answer the two questions:1. Whats the name of the man? _2. What sports can you see him does in the video clip ? _Step II: Fast-reading and ListeningListen and read quickly to find the answers:Did Aron get out of danger and escape death?_What did he do after the accident?_Step III. Careful-reading1:Reading the first paragraph quickly to know clearly what was Aron like before the accident. After reading, fill in the following diagram.2: Read the second paragraph to find out how the accident happened and ended. Fill in the clue of the story, pay special attention to the order of the event.3: Read the rest two paragraphs and answer the questionsWhat does “between a rock and a hard place ” mean? _What did Aron tell us in his book?_What is the spirit of Aron? _ Step IV Post-reading1.Review the story and put the sentences in the correct order:_On April 26, 2003, he had a serious mountain climbing accident._Aron loves mountain climbing and doesnt mind taking risks._Aron did not give up after the accident and keeps on climbing mountains today._He wrote a book about his experience._Aron lost half his right arm form the 2003 accident. 2. Some other information about Aron.A:He graduated from Carnegie Mellon University, which has computer science as one of its best majors in the US. B:Aron once worked for the Intel(英特尔) corporation. He quitted from Intel because of his love for mountain climbing and later worked for a store which sells outdoor sports equipment.C: Aron spent one hour cutting his arm off because the knife he used wasnt sharp enough.D: Aron was very lucky for doctors said that he would have died because of a serious loss of blood if he were brought to hospital even an hour later.E: Aron was lucky also because when his colleagues(同事)saw he didnt go to work and couldnt contact him, they called the police and the police sent helicopters to search for him.Each of these facts play a role in Arons success and each stands for one thing: education, ones own interest, time, friends, By learning these facts, help students understand: Nothing is more important than life. Its necessary to get a good education. We should try to do what we like to do and do it well. Dont waste time.
