However, until we read his book, High Adventure, we dont understand that Hillary had to grow into this success. You see, in 1952 he tried to climb Qomolangma, but failed. A few weeks later a group in England asked him to give a speech to its members. Hillary was given a warm welcome when walking on stage. People there thought him as a hero, but Edmund Hillary saw himself as a failure. He moved away from the microphone and walked to the side of the stage. He raised one hand and pointed at a picture of the mountain. He said in a loud voice, “Qomolangma, you beat me the first time, but Ill beat you the next time because youve grown all you are going to grow, but Im still growing!”Passage 2 Junko was born in 1939 and grew up in a small town in Japan. During her childhood, she was thin andweak. At age 10, Junko went on a school trip. The students climbed two mountains, and Junko loved it.She could climb in her own time and ability. She rushed to help others. Everyone was alive but they all hurt badly, including Junko. However, the team decided to continue their climb. About two weeks later, on May 16, Junko reached the top of Qomolangma. She was the first woman to stand on top of the highest mountain in the world. Junkos will and her power helped her achieve her goals. Junko still climbs mountains. She wants people to remember her as the free spirit of
