For example, an exporter, in calculating his export price, works out dock charges, clearing and forwarding charges, freight and insurance, and adds them, and certainly also their profit margin to the price paid to the manufacturer to make it, say, CIF Hamburg. What is CIF Hamburg? It is one of the trade terms, or delivery terms we usually use them. When an exporter and an importer reach a contract, they may be unaware of the different trading practices in their respective countries. This can give rise to misunderstanding, disputes and litigations with all the waste time and money that this entails. What is more, sending goods from one country to another, as part of an international transaction, can be a risky business. If they are lost or damaged, or if delivery does not take place for some other reason, the climate of confidence between parties to the contract may degenerate to a point where a lawsuit is brought. However, if the seller and the buyers in international contracts want their deals to be successful completed, they have, at the very beginning of the deal, to make clear to each other their respective obligations and find the full expression of those in the trade terms. In order to avoid or, at least, reduce to a considerable degree the uncertainties of different interpretations of such terms in different countries, the ICC first published a set of international rules for the interpretations of the most commonly used trade terms in foreign trade.
