One was that the volcano had not broken out for some time and so at the very center of the volcano there was an huge plug of lava, this acted like a cork(塞子) in a bottle, stopping the pressure below from being released(释放). The second factor was that ocean water entered the very centre of the volcano as the explosions became more violent. This caused superheated steam to build up enormous pressure and this was finally released in the largest explosion of all on August 27, 1883. The sudden release of the pressure sent huge amounts of ash, rock and dust into the sky. Some of the ash rose 80km into the air and traveled around the Earth causing brightly coloured sunsets for several years.Krakatau almost disappeared; for many years after this explosion, it remained very quiet. However, there was still activity going on under the sea and on 25 January, 1925, a small volcanic cone appeared above the surface of the water. This new volcano was named Anak Kmkatau, or Child of Krakatau. Over the following years, the size of the island grew larger, by 1959, the island was 300 metres above the surface of the sea. The volcanic activity has continued and the latest eruptions were in 1995.There is no doubt Krakatar will continue to grow and there is also strong evidence that at some point in the future there will be another violent explosion. Krakatau is in a part of the world where the surface of the Earth is unstable and is always moving and cracking. If, in the future, another “cork” becomes fixed in the centre of the volcano, the pressure will build up. A series of a smaller explosions will allow sea-water into the centre of the volcano and once again the result will be a terribly destructive explosion. 56. The pressure under the volcano can not be released because _A. the plug looks like a cork in a bottle B. the volcano hasnt broken out for some timeC. the center of the volcano is blocked by lava D. the temperature of the steam is not high enough.57. We can infer from the article that Krakatau volcano_A. has broken out three times B. never dies but continues to be activeC. will kill many people again in the future D. is always moving and growing above sea.58. All of the following results are caused by the explosion at Krakatau EXCEPT that_A. ash, rock and dust was thrown high into the air B. other small volcanoes were soon produced.C. The island of Kratau was destroyedD. People saw beautiful sunsets for some years59. The article is mainly about_A. the cause of the Krakatau volcano B. B. the danger of the Krakatau volcanoC. the past of the Krakatau volcano D. the future of the Krakatau volcanoBHow could we possibly think that keeping animals in cages in unnatural environmentsmostly for entertainment purposesis fair and respectful?Zoo officials say they are concerned about animals. However, most zoos remain “collections” of interesting “things” rather than protective habitats(栖息地). Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animals bored, lonely, and far from their natural homes.Zoos claim(声称) to educate people and save endangered species(物种), but visitors leave zoos without having learned anything meaningful about the animals natural behavior, intelligence, or beauty. Zoos keep animals in small spaces or cages, and most signs only mention the species name, diet, and natural range(分布区). The animals normal behavior is seldom noticed because zoos dont usually take care of the animals natural needs. The animals are kept together in small spaces, with no privacy and little opportunity for mental and physical exercise. This results in unusually and self-destructive behavior called zoochosis. A worldwide study of zoos found that zoochosis is common among animals kept in small spaces or cages. Another study showed that elephants spend 22 percent of their time making repeated head movements or biting cage bars, and bears spend 30 percent of their time walking back and forth, a sign of unhappiness and pain.Furthermore, most animals in zoos are not endangered. Captive breeding(圈养繁殖) of endangered big cats. Asian elephants, and other species has not resulted in their being sent back to the wild. Zoos talk a lot about their captive breeding programs because they do not want people to worry about a species dying out. In fact, baby animals also attract a lot of paying customers. Havent we seen enough competitions to name baby animals?Actually, we will save endangered species only if we save their habitats and put an end to the reasons people kill them. Instead of supporting zoos, we should support groups that work to protect animals natural habitats.60How would the author describe the animals life in zoos?ADangerous.BUnhappy.CNatural.DEasy.61In the state of zoochosis, animals _.Aremain in cagesBbehave strangelyCattack other animalsDenjoy moving around62What does the author try to argue in the passage?AZoos are not worth the public support.BZoos fail in their attempt to save animals.CZoos should treat animals as human beings.DZoos use animals as a means of making money.63The author tries to persuade readers to accept his argument mainly by _.Apointing out the faults in what zoos doBusing pictures he has taken at zoosCquestioning the way animals are protectedDdiscussing the advantages of natural habitatsCA university graduate described as a “respectable and intelligent” woman is seeking professional help after being convicted of (证明有罪)shoplifting for the second time in six months.Ana Luz, recently studying for her PhD, has been told she could end up behind bars unless she can control the desire to steal from shops.Luz ,who lives with her partner in Fitzwilliam Road ,Cambridge ,admitted stealing clothes worth 9.95 from John Lewis in Oxford Street ,London ,on March 9.Phillip Lemoyne ,prosecuting(起诉),said Luz selected some clothes from a display and took them to the ladies toilet in the store .When she came out again she was wearing one of the skirts she had selected ,having taken off the anti-theft security alarms(防盗警报装置).She was stopped and caught after leaving the store without paying, Mr. Lemoyne said.He added that she was upset on her arrest and apologized for her actions.Luz, 28, was said to have been convicted of shoplifting by Cambridge judges last October, but Morag Duff, defending, said she had never been in trouble with the police before that.“She is ashamed and embarrassed but doesnt really have any explanation why she did this,” Miss Duff said. “She didnt intend to steal when she went into the store .She is at a loss to explain it. She is otherwise a very respectable and intelligent young lady .She went to her doctor and asked for advice because she wants to know if there is anything in particular that caused her to do this.”Judge David Azan fined Luz 50, and warned : “Youve got a criminal record .If you carry on like this, you will end up in prison, which will ruin your bright future you may have.”Luz achieved a degree in design at university in her native Spain ,went on to a famous university in Berlin , Germany for her masters degree and is now studying for a PhD at Cambridge University ,UK.64What is Ana Luzs nationality?AAmerican.BBritish.CSpanish.DGerman.65What does the underlined sentence “She is at a loss to explain it” mean?AIn her opinion it was a loss to the clothes shops where she stole things .BShe doesnt have any idea why she has the desire to steal from shops .CShe thinks it is a loss for her to explain why she stole things from shops.DPersonally she feels ashamed and embarrassed for her shoplifting actions.66Which of the following best explains the meaning of the word “shoplifting” used in the passage?ACarrying goods in a lift for a shop.BTaking goods to the ladies toilet.CSelecting some goods from a display.DTaking goods from a shop without paying.DThe other day, my friend Jane was invited to a 40th birthday party. The time printed on the invitation was 7.30pm. Jane went off with her husband, expecting a merry evening of wine, food, and song.By 9.45, everybody was having great fun, but no food had appeared. Jane and David were restless. Other guests began whispering that they, too, were starving. But no one wanted to leave, just in case some food was about to appear. By 11.00, there was still no food, and everyone was completely off their heads. Jane and David left hungry and angry.Their experience suggests that the words on the printed invitations need to be made clearer. Everyone reads and understands the invitations differently. Most of us would agree that 6.30 -8.30pm means drinks only, go out to dinner afterwards; 8.00pm or 8.30pm means possible dinner, but 9.30pm and any time there after means no food, oat beforehand, roll up late. But this is not always the case. If asked to a students party at 6.30pm, it is normal for guests not to appear before midnight, if at all, and no one cares. Being the first to arrive - looking eager - is social death. When my mother is asked to a party for 6.30, she likes to be there, if not on time, then no later than seven. My age group (late thirties) falls somewhere between the two, but because we still think were young, were probably closer to student-time than grown-up time. The accepted custom at present is confusing (混乱的), sometimes annoying, and it often means you may go home hungry, but it does lend every party that precious element (成分) of surprise.67. The underlined words off their heads probably mean_.A. tired B. crazy C. curious D. pleased68. Jane and David s story is used to show that_ .A. party-goers usually get hungry at partiesB. party invitations can be confusing C. people should ask for food at parties D. birthday parties for middle-aged people are dull69. According to the writer, people in their late thirties_.A. are likely to arrive late for a party B. care littl
