At first, the producers of the movie told Taylor that she was too small to play the part of Velvet. However, they waited for her for a few months as she exercised and trained-and added three inches to her height in four months! Her acting in National Velvet is still considered the best by a child actress.Elizabeth Taylor was born in London in 1932. Her parents, both Americans, had moved there for business reasons. When World War II started, the Taylors moved to Beverly Hills, California, and there Elizabeth started acting in movies. After her success as a child star, Taylor had no trouble moving into adult(成人)roles and won twice for Best Actress: Butterfield 8 (1960) and Whos Afraid of Virginia Woolf? ( 1966 )Taylor s fame(名声) and popularity gave her a lot of power with the movie industry, so she was able to demand very high pay for her movies. In 1963, she received $ 1 million for her part in Cleopatra-the highest pay received by any star up to that time.Elizabeth Taylor is a legend (传奇人物) of our times. Like Velvet Brown in National Velvet, she had been lucky, and she had beauty, fame and wealth. But she was also a hard worker. Taylor seldom acted in movies any more. Instead, she put her time and efforts into her businesses, and into helping others-several years ago, she founded an organization that has raised more than $ 40 million for research and education.26. The producers didn t let Taylor play the part of Velvet at first because they thought she _.A. was small in sizeB. was too youngC. did not play well enoughD. did not show much interest27. What Elizabeth Taylor and Velvet Brown had in common was that they were both _.A. popular all their livesB. famous actressesC. successful when very youngD. rich and kindhearted28. In March 1997, an ll-year-old boy and a 13-year-old using handguns and rifles shot dead four children and a teacher at a school in Jonesboro, Arkansas. In October, two were killed and seven wounded in a shooting at a Mississippian school. Two months later, a 14-year-old boy killed three high school students and wounded five in Daducab, Kentucky. Most of the expulsions(开除), 56 percent, were from high schools, which have students from about age 13, 34 percent were from junior high schools and 9 percent were from elementary schools. The report said.30. From the first paragraph we can infer that in US schools _.A. students enjoy shootingB. students are eager to be soldiersC. safety is a problemD. students can make guns31. The report from the US Department of Education shows that _.A. the number of the expulsions is now largeB. the number of the expulsions is wrongC. there are soldiers hiding among the studentsD. guns are out of control in US schools32. The main idea of Paragraph Four shows us _.A. some examples of shootings in US schoolsB. the Americans feelingC. some famous schoolsD. that some teachers were killed by students33. As they breathe in and out, they attend to their feelings. As thoughts go through their minds, they let them go. Breathe. Let go. Breathe. Let go.According to a recent study at the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts, three months of training in this kind of meditation causes a marked change in how the brain allocates( 分配) attention. It appears that the ability to let go thoughts that come into mind frees the brain to attend to more rapidly changing things and events in the outside world. Expert mediators are better than other people at catching such fast-changing stimuli(刺激), like facial expressions. The study provides evidence for changes in the workings of the brain with mental training. People can learn and improve abilities of all sorts with practice, everything from driving to playing the piano. The study has shown that meditation is good for the brain. It appears to reduce pressure and promote a sense of well-being.In an experiment, 17 volunteers with no meditation experience in the experimental group spent three months meditating 10 to 12 hours a day. A control group also with no meditation experience meditated for 20 minutes a day over the same period. Both groups were then given the tests with two numbers in a group of letters. As both groups looked for the numbers, their brain activity was recorded.Everyone could catch the first number. But the brain recordings showed that the less experienced mediators tended to grasp the first number and hang onto it, so they missed the second number. Those with more experience gave less attention to the first number, as if letting it go, which led to an increased ability to grasp the second number. This shows that attention can change with practice.Just ask Daniel Levision, who meditated for three months as part of the study. I am a much better listener, he said, I do not get lost in my own personal reaction to what people are saying. 35. The underlined word them in Paragraph 1 refers to _.A. feelingsB. mindsC. peopleD. thoughts36. Meditators manage their daily tasks better because they _.A. are given less pressureB. allocate their attention betterC. have more stimuli for lifeD. practice them more frequently37. The study proves that _.A. meditation improves ones healthB. brain activity can be recordedC. human attention can be trainedD. mediators have a good sense of hearing(D)All her life, my mother wanted busy children. It was very important that her house should remain at all things clean and tidy. You could turn your back for a moment in my mother s house, leave a half written letter on the dining table, a magazine open on the chair, and turn around to find that my mother had put it back where it belonged, as she explained. My wife, on one of her first visits to my mother s house, placed a packet of biscuits on an end table and went to the kitchen to fetch a drink. When she returned, she found the packet had been removed. Confused (疑惑的), she set down her drink and went back to the kitchen for more biscuits, only to return to find that her drink had disappeared. Up to then she had guessed that everyone in my family held onto their drinks so as not to make water rings on the end tables. Now she knows better. These disappearances had a confusing effect on our family. We were all inclined to (有.的倾向) forgetfulness, and it was common for one of us, upon returning from the bathroom, to find the every sign of his work in progress had disappeared suddenly. Do you remember what I was doing? was a question frequently asked, but rarely answered. Now my sister has developed a secondhand love of clean windows, and my brother does the cleaning in his house, perhaps to avoid having to be the one to lift his feet.
