Teaching ContentsUnit 5 Do you want to watch a game show? - Listening and Speaking II. Analysis of the Teaching MaterialsThe topic of this unit is about entertainment, which both talks about preferences and introduces different types of TV shows or movies such as talk shows, soap operas, sports shows, sitcoms, game shows, talent shows and news. The part of listening and speaking focuses on how to express ones likes and dislikes about kinds of TV shows or make their own plan to watch TV, which is what one must do in their daily life. After listening and talking about students interest, they are supposed to learn how to make their own conversations or dialogues to express their preferences with the target languages, such as, A: What do you think of ? / What do you want to do? B: I like/I dont mind/I cant stand/ I want to . The grammar of this unit focuses on the usages of infinitives (to do) that are used as object. All of people like to watch TV in their free time and talk something about kinds of TV shows. This unit should arouse students interest to watch all kinds of TV shows and help students to know more about TV programs and the definition of the verb infinitive. This unit contains six parts: Listening and Speaking I, Grammar Focus, Listening and Speaking II, Reading Comprehension, Language Focus (sentence structures and sentence patterns), and Writing Part. This period mainly deals with Listening and Speaking I, which is a new lesson.The topic of Listening and Speaking is about ones preferences on TV shows, which is shown in a conversation between Mark and Jack. On the whole, the conversation is not difficult to understand. Therefore, the focus of listening is to listen for details by listening and numbering the shows in the order and then by filling in the blanks for useful expressions, which prepares for output of language-speaking. Speaking goes with two tasks of different levels to meet students needs. The topic of this part is practical and useful in life. After learning, students are expected to be able to express their own preferences by themselves. III. Analysis of the Students I think students in Grade Eight are familiar with the topic of TV shows, which make the students not so difficult to understand the listening text. Meanwhile, they have accumulated a certain number of words to express themselves in simple English. Therefore, most of them can take part in the activities of speaking with two different levels.IV. Teaching Aims 1. Knowledge aimsGet students to understand the conversation about how to express ones preferences and make plans by listening.1) To get the main idea by grasping such key phrases as “talent show”, “talk show” and “soap opera”.2) To get the details by taking notes while listening. 3) To learn useful expressions on how to ask and answer ones preferences by filling in the blanks while listening.2. Ability aims 1) To know well such listening skills as grasping key words and taking notes.2) To make up a conversation on preference expression and preparation for plan. 3. Affective aims After learning, students are expected to become independent and eager to express themselves in English depending on the target language.V. Teaching Important and Difficult Points 1. Teaching Important Points 1) To improve students listening ability and develop students listening skills by grasping key words and taking notes.2) To make up a conversation on preference expression and preparation for plan.2. Teaching Difficult Point To make up a conversation group by group on preference expression and preparation for plan and speak it out in front of the class.VI. Teaching Methods 1. Task-based approach With the ideas of “learning by doing” and “doing things with the language”, the teacher designs specific and manageable tasks for students to complete to help them understand the listening text. Meanwhile, speaking goes with tasks of two different levels.2. Cooperative teaching method This includes cooperation between the teacher and students, among students in groups or in class in order to simplify the difficulty of tasks and make students learn to solve problems in the process of cooperation.VII. Teaching Procedures Step I Lead-in (cartoon character guessing game among students to arise their interest)【设计说明】师生互动,猜袋子里的动画人物,旨在激发学生兴趣,然后导入新课。Step II Video show (each video clip displays a new word)Learn new words in the video as follows: game show, news, sitcom, soap opera, sports show, talent show and talk show.Step III Flash card (check the new words they learned just now)Step IV Free talk between teacher and students to lead to learn some new attitude words as follows: love, like, dont mind, dont like and cant stand.【设计说明】以小组的形式就刚学过的TV shows来阐述自己的态度或观点Step V Pre-listening (after talking about our own attitudes on TV shows, then lets listen about Marks and Jacks likes & dislikes.)Listening task 1: Listen and number the shows in the correct order.【设计说明】降低听力难度,扫清听力障碍。While-listening Listening task 2: Fill in the blanks.1. Listen for the main idea by grasping key words about TV shows and the sentence patterns, for example, what do you want to do?/ what do you think of? The conversation is mainly about Marks and Jacks preferences on TV shows. 2. Listen for the specific details by taking notes. 3. Listen for useful expressions by filling in the blanks. Mark: Hey, Jack, I plan to watch TV tonight. Do you want to join me?Jack: Sure. What do you want to watch?Mark: Well, what do you think of talk shows?Jack: I dont mind them, but sometimes they can be a bit boring.Mark: Thats true. Do you want to just watch the news?Jack: I guess so. Maybe we can watch that new talent show after the news. I usually cant stand talent shows, but that one is quite funny.Mark: OK, sure, but the soccer game starts at 5:00 p.m.Jack: Oh, yeah, I want to watch that game, too.【设计说明】听力部分的任务设计是由易到难,逐层递进。第一遍侧重听对话大意,第二遍侧重听细节,听有用的句型,旨在练习听力技巧,提高学生听力水平,学会如何表达自己的喜好和如何询问他人的喜好,并为speaking的输出做准备。Step VI Speaking Here are two tasks for each group of six students. The group leader is responsible for distributing tasks on the basis of the members interest. And each group should finish these two tasks. 1. Make up a conversation with the help of the given situation as follows. (if allowed) Student A asks what the other one thinks of TV shows, and the person answers his own preferences.2. Make up a conversation on how to express ones likes and dislikes using the target language by students themselves. 3. Make up group presentations using their own words in different scenarios. Pay attention to their pronunciation, intonation and emotion.Suggested conversation:Example 1:A: Do you want to watch TV?B: Yes.A: What do you want to watch?B: I want to watch game shows, how about you?A: Sports shows.Example 2:A: What kind of TV show do you like?B: I like talent shows.A: What do you think of them?B: I think theyre interesting. How about you?A: I like sports shows.B: How do you like them?A
