We often forget this fact when we think aboutthe other building blocks of life such as vitamins, minerals and proteins(蛋白质). We can live for many days without eating, but two or three days without water usually leads to death. The human body may look solid, but most of it is water. New-born babies are as much as 85% water. Women are about 65% water and men are about 75% water. Women usually have less water than men because women, in general, have more fat cells and fat cells hold less water than other kinds of cells.Water does many different things to keep us healthy. It carries hormones(荷尔蒙), antibodies and foods through the body, and carries away waste materials. This is why different part of the body contains amounts of water. For example, blood is 83% water, muscles are 75% water, the brain is 74%, and bones are 25%. Water is necessary for cooling the body on hot days and when we are working hard or exercising. Water carries body heat to the surface of the skin, where the heat is lost through perspiration(出汗). Researchers say cold liquids cool us faster than warm liquids, because cold liquids take up more heat inside the body and carry it away faster. They say, however, that cold sweet drinks do not work well because the sugar slows the liquid from getting into the bloodstream. Researchers also note that fat cells block body heat from escaping quickly. Fat cells under the skin act like warm clothing to keep heat inside. This is why overweight people have a more difficulty time staying cool than thin people. The body loses water every day through perspiration and urine. If we lose too much, we will become sick. A 10% drop in body water can cause the blood system to fall. A 15-20% drop usually leads to death. To replace what is lost, health experts say grown persons should drink about 2 liters of water each day, and more in hot weather. We say we also can get some of the water we need in the foods we eat. Most fruits and vegetables are more than 80% water. Water may be one of the most simple of all chemical substances(物质)but it is the most important substance that we put Into our bodies.56. Water is important to human body mainly because _. A. it can cool the body on hot days B. more than two-thirds of the human body is water C. we have to drink water every day D. the foods we eat mostly contain water57. Men usually have more water than women because _. A. women usually have more fat cells B. men usually lose more water through perspiration and urine C. womens bodies contain more vitamins, minerals and proteins D. mens bodies contain less water than womens58. Water does the following things to keep us healthy except that _. A. it can carry away waste materials B. it can help to cool the body on hot days C. it produces blood in the body D. it helps the food in the body to be digested59. The most proper title for the passage should be _. A. Water B. Water Is Important C. Water and Health D. Water and Humans B When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your anger. But forgiveness is possibleand it can be surprisingly helpful to your physical and mental health. Indeed, research has shown that people who forgive report more energy, better appetite(胃口)and better sleep patterns. “People who forgive show less anger and more hopefulness,” says Dr. Frederic Luskin, who wrote the book Forgive for Good.“So it can help save on the wear and tear on our system and allow people to feel more energetic.” So when someone has hurt you, calm yourself first. Take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure:a beautiful scene in nature, someone you love. Dont wait for an apology. “Many times the person who hurt you may never think of apologizing,” says Dr. Luskin. “They may have wanted to hurt you or they just dont see things the same way. So if you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting a very long time.” Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean accepting the action of the person who upset you. Mentally going over your hurt gives power to the person who brought you pain. Instead, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you. Finally, try to see things from the other persons perspective(视角). You may realize that he or she was acting out of ignorance(无知),fear-even love. To gain perspective, you may want to write a letter to yourself from that persons point of view.1 p1 i: i: H* |5 z4 h7 k6 B: , b60. The text is mainly written to explain . But one more has just been addeda communications blackout caused by solar storms. After a period of calm within the Sun, scientists have detected the signs of a flesh cycle of sunspots that could peak in 2012, just in time for the arrival of the Olympic torch in London. Now scientists believe that this peak could result in vast solar explosions that could throw billions of tons of charged matter towards the Earth, causing strong solar storms that could jam the telecommunications satellites and interact links sending five Olympic broadcast from London. The Suns activity has a strong influence on the Earth. The Olympics could be in the middle of the next solar maximum which could affect the functions of communications satellites, said Professor Richard Harrison, head of space physics at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire. At the peak of the cycle, violent outbursts called coronal mass ejections (日冕物质抛射) occur in the Suns atmosphere, throwing out great quantities of electrically-charged matter. A coronal mass ejection can carry a billion tons of solar material into space at over a millionkilometres per hour. Such events can expose astronauts to a deadly amount, can disable satellites, cause power failures on Earth and disturb communications, Professor Harrison added. The risk is greatest during a solar maximum when there is the greatest number of sunspots. Next week in America, NASA is scheduled to launch a satellite for monitoring solar activity called the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), which will take images of the Sun that are 10 times clearer than the most advanced televisions available. The Rutherford Appleton Laboratory helped to make the high-tech cameras that will capture images of the solar flares (太阳耀斑) and explosions as they occur. Professor Richard Hold away, the labs director, said that the SDO should be able to provide early warning of a solar flare or explosion big enough to affect satellite communications on Earth If we have advance warning, well be able to reduce the damage. What you dont want is things switching off for a week with no idea of whats caused the problem, he said.63. The phrase communications blackout in paragraph 1 most probably refers to during the 2012 Olympics. A. the extinguishing of the Olympic torch B. the collapse of broadcasting systems C. the transportation breakdown in London D. the destruction of weather satellites64. What can be inferred about the solar activity described in the passage? A. The most fatal matter from the corona falls onto Earth. B. The solar storm peak occurs in the middle of each cycle. C. It takes several seconds for the charged matter to reach Earth. D. The number of sunspots declines after coronal mass ejections.65. According to the passage, NASA will launch a satellite to _. A. take images of the solar system B. provide early warning of thunderstorms C. keep track of solar activities D. improve the communications on Earth66. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage? A. Solar Storms: An Invisible Killer B. Solar Storms: Earth Environment in Danger C. Solar Storms: Threatening the Human Race D. Solar Storms: Human Activities to Be Troubled D The term “multitasking” originally referred to a computers ability to carry out several tasks at one time. For many people, multitasking has become a way of life and even a key to success. In fact, some excellent mental aerobic exercises (人脑训练) involve engaging the brain in two or more challenging activities at a time. Although checking e-mail while talking on a phone and reading the newspaper may be second nature for some people, many times multitasking can make us less productive, rather than more. And studies show that too much multitasking can lead to increased stress, anxiety and memory loss. In order to multitask, the brain uses an area known as the prefrontal cortex (前额叶脑皮层). Brian scans of volunteers performing multiple tasks together show that as they shift from task to task, this front part of the brain actually takes a moment of rest between tasks. You may have experienced a prefrontal cortex “moment of rest” yourself if youve ever dialed (拨电话) and the answering, your mind shifted to anther thought or task, and then look that “moment” to come back. Research has also shown that for many volunteers. Job efficiency (效率) declines while multitasking as compared to when they perform only one task at a time. Multitasking is easiest when at least one of the tasks in habitual, or requires little thought. Most people dont find it difficult to eat and read the newspaper at the same time. However, when two or more attention requiring tasks are attempted at one time, people sometimes make mistakes. We often dont remember things as well when were trying to manage several details at the same time. Without mental focus, we may not pay enough attention to new information coming in, so it never makes it into our memory stores. That is one of the main reasons we forget peoples nameseven sometimes right after they have introduced themselves. Multitasking can also affect our relationships. If someone checks their e-mail while on the phone with a friend, they may come off as absent-minded or disinterested. It can also cause that person to miss or overlook key information being passed on to them. 67. Why are some mental aerobic exercises designed to engage people in multitasking? A. To make them more productive. B. To reduce their stress and anxiety. C. To develop their communication skills. D. To help them perform daily tasks more easily.68. According to Paragraph 2, why may a person suddenly forget who has called? A. He may leave his prefrontal cortex temporarily damaged. B. He is probably interrupted by another task. C. He is probably not very familiar with the person he has called. D. He may need a rest between dialing and speaking. 69. People tend to make mistake when _. A. they perform several challenging tasks at a time. B. new messages are processed one after another C. their relationships with others are affected D. the tasks require little thought70. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Multitasking has become a way of life. B. Multitasking often leads to efficiency decline. C. Multitasking exercises need to be improved. D. Multitasking enables people to remember things better. 第卷(非选择题,共35分)第四部分:写(满分35分)第一节:阅读填空 请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。New research says 35 percent of child deaths worldwide are caused by hunger.
