Band 5 Translation:Section A:Chinese to English Text 1 “Thank you,” said the woman, and she gave the fairy three silver coins. Then she went home and planted the seed. Soon there grew up a large handsome red flower, something like a tulip in appearance.“What a lovely flower,” said the woman, and she kissed its beautiful petals. While she did so, the flower opened with a snap, and now people could see that it was a real tulip. Within the flower sat a very delicate and graceful little maiden. She was scarcely half as long as a thumb, and they gave her the name of “Thumbelina”.Text 2 To know the Joy of being given a new flat, one has only to see the wretchedness of those with inadequate housing; and to know the importance of allotting housing, one need only to see how those in charge calculate as finely as a general confronting a dangerous enemy and how the applicants marshall all their prestige, words, and brains .On January 14, after much wrangling and rushing about, many clashes, excuses, false alarms, a showdown, waiting, despairs and hope rekindled, he received six keys, three for each flat. The grooved keys of aluminium alloy looked like any other keys, still smelling of dust and dirt with their protective coating of oil. He was pleased to get them, but not as happy as he had expected to be.Text 3 She held me in her arms, humming and patting me as I became more aggrieved than ever. “Listen,” she said. “Listen now. Can you hear it?” I stopped crying to listen intently and heard a beautiful sound, soft and fluid. Was it a pigeon whistle, the autumn wind, the leaves brushing against the eaves as they fell or was it just Granny humming? I still have no idea. “Go to sleep. Ill hit the grey monkey if it comes.” That was her lullaby. On the ceiling was a quivering spot of light, the reflection of the sun in the water basin. It too was soft and fluid and merged into a peaceful dream as I fell asleep in her arms.Text 4 Snow mantled the cottage tiles where the eaves were in disrepair and hung down in finger-like icicles from roofs under which people huddled as though stored away in an icebox, to awaken with cold at midnight and hear the old north wind howling over their heads.Dawn broke, and the sun shed its golden radiance on the bitterly cold village. A couple of dogs were rolling on the threshing ground. A couple of women were breaking ice at the river bank to draw water; three hornwort boats pressed tightly together as if frozen into a block .Text 5While historical sites of other countries were built at a certain time, enjoyed their prosperity, and then became preserved as relics for people to visit, Chinas Great Wall is different. It was rebuilt and extended dynasty after dynasty. The Great Wall grew in length as time went on. China has too long a history, of too much war and suffering, for any ancient monument to remain forever unless it was buried underground in tombs, or hidden in places unfrequented by people. The Epang Palace was burnt down, Prince Tengs Pavilion collapsed, and Yellow Crane Tower was rebuilt only recently. Dujiang Dam at Chengdu in Sichuan has remained due to its irrigation function.Text 6 A home is a place for people to live in; therefore everything should be measured against the standard whether people feel at home. Excessive attention to ones dwelling turns one into a slave in bondage to material structure, and a round-the-clock housekeeper. Its hardly worth the while. The layout and ambience of an enviable home should be designed to guarantee the health of every family member and promote domestic harmony. An ideal home should be pervaded by human feeling, and if too clean and too luxurious, the place will have its human touch abridged. Some people like to decorate their home in such a way as if it was open for show to foreign visitors only. The result is: even the owner of the mansion doesnt feel at home.Text 7We will further deepen the reform. In the economic restructuring, we shall speed up the development of a market system, let the market play a bigger role, improve the macro adjustment and regulation by the State and accelerate development of the national economy. Moreover, we shall also endeavor to push forward structural reform in the fields of science and technology, education and culture. We should enthusiastically press ahead with our political reform by promoting socialist democracy and the rule of law. Parallel to our economic reform and development, we should make even greater effort in the reform of our civil administrative system and institutions so as to transform the government functions, cut down staff size and raise efficiency. In all reforms, we maintain that it is essential to be bold in exploring new ways and experimenting and to sum up experience continuously.Text 8Peking opera is a synthesis of stylized action, singing, dialogue and mime, acrobatic fighting and dancing to represent a story or depict different characters and their feelings of gladness, anger, sorrow, happiness, surprise, fear and sadness. In Peking opera there are four main types of roles; sheng (male), dan (female), Jing ( painted face, male), and chou (clown, male or female). The characters may be loyal or treacherous, beautiful or ugly, good or bad, their images being vividly manifested. The types of facial make-ups in Peking opera are rich and various, depicting different characters and remarkable images, and therefore they are highly appreciated. For the painted role, the different colors of the faces represent different characters and personality. Red stands for uprightness and loyalty, black means valor and wisdom, blue and green indicate the vigorous and enterprising characters of rebellious heroes, yellow and white represent cunning and gold and silver represent mystic or super-natural power.Text 9 Since the 1990s when China decided to open up in all directions, Shanghai, as an international metropolis, assumed the leading role in implementing the countrys reform and open policies on account of her superior geographical position, firm economic foundation and rich talent resources. However, with cramped developing space in the urban area, she was consciously aware of the fact that the cost of remoulding the old city area was much higher than that of building a new city area. Therefore, developing Pudong became a must. In April 1990, Chinese government announced its plan to develop Pudong and open up the area to the outside world. Pudong, symbolizing Shanghais future and promise, was meant to be developed into a modernized new area that was outward-looking, multi-functional, instead of just an industrial area. It would make full use of the experience gained by several southern economic special zones and in return provide references for the planning and development of other new areas in China.Text 10 Near Chinas northern borders lived a man well versed in the practices of Taoism. His horse, for no reason at all, got into the territory of the northern tribes. Everyone commiserated with him. “Perhaps this will soon turn out to be a blessing,” said the father. After a few months, his animal came back, leading a fine horse from the north. Everyone congratulated him. “Perhaps this will soon turn out to be a cause of misfortune,” said the father. Since he was well-off and kept good horses? the son became fond of riding and eventually broke his thigh bone falling from a horse. Everyone commiserated with him. “Perhaps this will soon turn out to be a blessing,” said the father. One year later, the northern tribes started a big invasion of the border regions. All able-bodied young men took up arms and fought against the invaders, and as a result, around the border nine out of ten men died. This mans son did not join in the fighting because he was crippled and so both the boy and his father survived. Band 6 Translation: Section A:Chinese to English Passage 1The structure of the family, which is a basic unit of society, changes along with the development of society. In Chinas feudal society, which lasted several thousand years, a self-sufficient small-scale peasant economy predominated. The family was not only the basic unit in everyday life, but also a basic unit of production. An ideal family admired by all consisted of five generations, with the male members making all the important decisions. During the last hundred years, great changes have taken place in China. The Chinese society, which has gone through the long feudal period, and later the semi-colonial, semi-feudal period, has turned into socialist society. This historic change has led to changes in the Chinese family structure. Large families began to fall into smaller extended families and stem families, with the trend toward the emergence of more and more nuclear families. After 1949, especially after the 1950s, many women began to walk out of their homes to participate in productive labor. Their economic independence brought an end to the old practice of the father as the only breadwinner and holder of the purse strings for the family.Passage 2The other day, I bought a computer, exalted in being able to make friends on the Internet. Much to my disappointment, most of the things I see on the screen are of disgusting vulgar stuff and unscrupulous chatting. As a result of the advance of communication technology, making friends on the Internet makes it possible to shorten the distance for human communion. However, it should not provide by any means a place where vulgar interests run wild. It is true that most of the people cover up their identities by writing under pseudonyms, but their spiritual emptiness and aimlessness are fully revealed. Nowadays, teenagers account for the majority of those engaged in making cyberpals. Therefore, the departments concerned should stand guard to ensure a proper orientation, a proper sense of right and wrong, and a clean and clear environment for web-surfers. Of course, making online friends is something new that needs care and guidance. We might as well initiate such activities as net motto solicitations or cyber star contests to refine the sentiment of the cybernauts, with noble feelings and writings in humorous and lively styles catering for both refined and popular tastes, immersing them in the sunshine and moisture of spiritual civilization.Passage 3She went to the shore immediately after breakfast every day and found comfort and relief at the sight of the boundless blue sea or a solitary white sail shimmering in the distance, as if her heart were soothingly stroked by a warm palm. She still had an ardent affection for the sea, although the thrill of her first visit blowing harmonica, picking up shell and sightseeing was never repeated. She could sit all day on a huge rock steeped in sea water, whether the sea glimmered smoothly like magnificent satin or the waves chopped skyward and roared like a fierce beast. As a child nestled in its mothers bosom, so did she leaned closely against the sea.Passage 4It struck him as curious that he could run on feet so frozen that he could not feel them when they struck the earth and took the weight of his body. He seemed to himself to skim along above the surface, and had no contact with the earth. Gazing at the path that wriggled itself into the woods, he stood transfixed as if he had been reminded of something. Somewhere he had seen a winged angel and he wondered if the angel felt as he did when skimming over the earth. Faced with the woods ahead with his arms outstretched, he shifted his look far beyond when nothing less than a sense of mystery enveloped him. He drew in a breath with some heaviness and pivoted to go away with his numbed feet.Passage 5Life and death are indigenously twinned. Death itself is not the greatest pain, for the dead do not feel pain any more. It is the living, who at the bare thought of impending death which is a constantly haunting menance that feel a spasm of pain. It is not merely the body that is dead but the mixed emotions for the beloved, the bereft, the departed and the disjoined. The greatest excruciation preying upon the soul is being forced to leave what we treasure most in our life what we love. The day on which we are born forebodes the moment of our death. The pain, generally speaking, is the suffering inflicted upon life from cradle to grave. The right and wrong of human life seem to merge into each other. Right seems wrong and wrong right. Though aware of its transience, we tend to be easily agitated and worried about the right or wrong of our life. However, it should be made clear that life in itself is worth our blessing, once we are born to be humans.Passage 6The lessons you learn at primary schools and secondary schools will impart to you some rudiments of knowledge. Even what you learn during the four years of university is something quite superficial. A university has often been misleadingly referred to as “the highest seat of learning”, which sounds as if there were no more learning to speak of beyond it. The research institute of a university, however, is the place for preliminary scholarship. But even there you get only the first taste of learning and the emphasis is on research methodology and practice. There is no end to learning, and life is far too short. That is why some of our ancients kept studying even when their hair grew grey. However, researches of this kind are an enormous source of interest.Passage 7Opening to the outside world is a basic policy of China. While increasing domestic demand, we should also make great efforts to develop foreign trade. We should continue to pursue the strategies of market diversification and use every possible means to increase exports. Further steps should be taken to support and encourage the export of mechanical and electrical products. We should try to improve the quality and grades of exports and do more to provide accessory items and the entire product lines and increase the added value of exports. We should help and encourage enterprises that meet the necessary conditions to engage in the processing of materials outside China to promote the export of labor, equipment and raw materials. This is a major way of increasing exports at the moment.Passage 8The founding of the Peoples Republic of China marks the standing up of the Chinese people. Forever gone is the era when the Chinese were bullied by foreign powers because of being weak for more than a century. During that period of time, the Chinese people have never been intimidated, and never balked at shedding blood and sacrificing their own lives successively for safeguarding national sovereignty and dignity. After fifty years of hard struggles, the Chinese people have embarked on the path to prosperity and strength. A powerful and prosperous China with all its people and nationalities united as one, is the guarantee for the Chinese nations existence and prosperity.Passage 9In recent years, our city has actively guided overseas investment to foster and develop pillar and key industries, such as the electronic base, the synthetic fiber textile base and the eel breeding, processing and export base, which have a considerable influence in our province and in our country as a whole. Overseas capital has also helped promote technological progress and enhance management expertise so that some products and technologies of the enterprises now lead the country. The introduction of foreign capital has helped most state-owned enterprises to overcome difficulties, increase outputs upgrade products, optimize product mix and noticeably enhance economic returns.Passage 10History has proven that only by upholding the purpose and principle of the United Nations Charter and adhering to the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and the norms of international relations, can various countries be able to live in harmony and develop together, and can world peace be safeguarded and promoted. In order to safeguard the fundamental interests of the Chinese people and the world people at large, China has always persisted with the independent foreign policy of peace, upholding fairness and promoting justice, and has made its unique contribution to the political solution of the international issues.
