Over the past 20 years, numerous studies have found that moderate alcohol consumption say, one or two beers. glasses of wine or cocktails daily helps to prevent coronary heart disease. Last week a report in the New England Journal of Medicine added strong new evidence in support of the theory. More important, the work provided the first solid indication of how alcohol works to protect the heart. In the study, researchers from Bostons Brigham and Womens Hospital and Harvard Medical School compared the drinking habits of 340 men and women who had suffered recent heart attacks with those of healthy people of the same age and sex. The scientists found that people who sip one or three drinks a day are about half as likely to suffer heart attacks as nondrinkers are. The apparent source of the protection: those who drank alcohol had higher blood levels of high-density lipoproteins, the so-called good cholesterol, which is known to repel heart disease. As evidence has mounted, some doctors have begun recommending a daily drink for patients of heart diseases. But most physicians are not ready to recommend a regular happy hour for everyone. (71) The risks of teetotalling(绝对禁酒) are nothing compared with the dangers of too much alcohol, including high blood pressure, stokes and liver troubles -not to mention violent behavior and traffic accidents. Moreover, some studies suggest that even moderate drinking may increase the incidence of breast and colon cancer. (72)Until there is evidence that the benefits of a daily drink dose of alcohol outweigh the risks, most people wont be able to take a doctors prescription to the neighborhood bar or liquor store.51、The medical article quoted in the first paragraph demonstrates_A)the way in which alcohol can help the heart B)how a couple of cocktails daily can stop heart problems C)why alcoholic drinks are dangerous to ones healthD)that reports on the advantages of alcohol were misfounded.52、The word ”repel”(Line6,Para2) probably means_A) deteriorate B)accelerate C )prevent D)compel53、Experiments showed that nondrinkers had_A)larger amounts of good cholesterol B)smaller amounts of good cholesterol C)higher blood pressure D)lower blood pressure54、According to the passage, moderate drinking_A)is still not medically advisable B)should be allowed on prescription C)is not related to liver problems D)is recommended by most doctors for heart patients.55、The main theme of this passage is _A)the change in recent drinking habits B)the connection between cancer and alcohol C)whether moderate drinkers outlive nondrinkers D)whether alcohol may be good for ones health.Task 2(10 points)Directions: This task is the same as Task1. the 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 56 through 60.Perhaps responses to technology often vary in peculiar ways. While biotechnology, for example, gives rise to organized opposition, information technology, which is actually no less invasive(侵害的),no more harmless, is welcomed or, at least, accepted with comparatively little debate.(73)Information technologies-from computers to communications -have obviously had an overwhelming social impact and their benefits hardly need explanations. But they have also disturbed privacy and threatened civil liberties. Computerized data banks empower bureaucratic authorities by providing easy access to personal information-about credit ratings, social performances, housing and medical histories. They will allow access to genetic figures, providing information about our tendencies to employers, insures, product advertisers, band and other institutions that exercise control over our lives. Computerization allows the severe extension of advertising through telemarketing requests that shamelessly intrude our home life. Information technologies have displaced people from jobs and turned potentially skilled workers into low-level computer technicians. Computers have not only facilitated the work of scholars, but also turned them into typists; yet one hears hardly a complaint. They have turned the simple act of buying a plane ticket into an endless manipulation, but we welcome the so-called convenience. They have encouraged new forms of crime and fraud(欺诈),but we describe them with grudging admiration. They have allowed new types of evil weaponry, but we call them ”smart bombs ”. Perhaps the most important, information technologies have extended the power of the mass media, creating unusual possibilities for political manipulation, reducing accountability, and changing the nature of political life. It is true that there are critiques of information technologies from those professionally concerned about their legal, social and political implications. There is a near total absence, however, of organized public concern about technologies with profound and problematic implications.56、According to the author, information technology_A)has nothing positive to say B)has not given rise to organized opposition C)is less harmless than biotechnology D)is accepted without any debate57、The benefits brought by information technology is _A)quite evident B)hard to explain C)being overcome by social opposition D)is accepted without any debate58、By the term ”computerization” the author means that_A)all industrial work is controlled by computer B)computer becomes an essential part in our everyday life C)all scientific work is done with the help of computer D)computer plays an important role in our economic life 59、What worries the author most is that_A) political manipulation through mass media will become normal in our political lifeB)our privacy will be within the easy reach of the businessmen C)there will be more crimes and frauds by means of high tech D)new types of evil weaponry will be invented and pose a great threat to our life60、Those who criticized information technologies are _A)leaders of organized public opposition to information technologiesB)persons engaged in professional work C)those who benefit least from information technologiesD)those who get the most rewards from information technologies.Task 3 (5 points)Directions: The following is a list of words about occupation.
