My only concern is that you are not active enough in putting forward your suggestions.”“But,” replied Kim, “I have always completed every assignment you have given me, Mr. Williams.”“I know that, Kim. And please, call me Bill. But what I expect is for you to think independently and introduce new ideas. I need more input from you more feedback on how things are going. I dont need a “yes man”. You never tell me what you think. You just smile as though everything is fine.”“But,” said Kim, “I feel that since you are my superior, it would be presumptuous of me to tell you what to do.”“Im not asking you to tell me what to do, but what you think we could do. To make suggestions. I employed you because I respect your experience in this field, but you are not communicating your thoughts to me.”“Yes, I see. Yesterday he proudly claimed in court that despite his complete lack of medical experience or qualifications, he had saved several peoples lives. He had even been allowed to assist a surgeon during an emergency operation on a patient who was about to die on something she had swallowed.“I watched one of those TV dramas about a hospital and suddenly I felt like playing one of the roles myself. So I put on a white jacket and a stethoscope (听诊器) and walked around one of the biggest hospitals in London. At first I just watched. Once you learn how doctors talk to patients, nurses and other doctors, its easy to take people in,” he said. One of the patients he treated was Laura Kennan. She had been knocked down by a car and fainted. When she came to in hospital, York was standing over her.“He looked very professional. He told me his name was Doctor Simon. Then he gave me some sort of injection,” she said. And then he suddenly cleared off when a nurse asked who he was. She didnt think there was anything wrong. “I would never have realized he was a fake if a policeman hadnt showed me his photograph a week later. When the policeman told me who he really was, I could hardly believe my ears.”Judge Raymond Adams told York that he was “shocked and horrified” that he got away with his deceiving for so long, and then sentenced him to eighteen months in a special prison for criminals with mental disorders.“I can only hope that this will not lead to further problems. After all, you will have considerable opportunity to study the behavior of the psychiatrists (精神科医生) who will look after you while you are there. If you try to persuade people that you yourself are a psychiatrist after you are set free, I shall make sure that you are given a much longer sentence,” Judge Adams warned York.49. Some tourists go to see battlefields or other historic remains. Others are looking for culture, or simply want to have their pictures taken in front of famous places. Most European tourists are looking for a sunny beach to lie on.Northern Europeans are willing to pay a lot of money for the sun because they have so little of it. People of cities like London, Copenhagen and Amsterdam spend much of their winter in the dark because the days are so short, and much of the year is in the rain. This is the reason why the Mediterranean has always attracted them. Every summer many people travel to Mediterranean resorts and beaches for their vacation. They all come for the same reason: sun!The huge crowds mean lots of money for the economies of Mediterranean countries. Italys 30,000 hotels are booked without a break every summer. And 13 million people camp out on French beaches, parks and roadsides. Spains long sandy coastline attracts more people than anywhere else. 37 million tourists visit there yearly, or one tourist for each person living in Spain. But there are signs that the area is getting more tourists than it can deal with. The Mediterranean is already one of the most polluted seas on earth. None of these, however, is ruining anyones fun. Obviously, they dont go there for clean water. They allow traffic jams and seem to like crowded beaches. They dont even mind the pollution. No matter how dirty the water is, the coastline still looks beautiful. And as long as the sun shines, its still better than sitting in the cold rain in Berlin, London, or Oslo.52. The writer seems to imply Northern Europeans travel mostly for the reason that _.A. they want to see historic remainsB. they wish to escape from cold, dark and rainy daysC. they would like to take pictures in front of famous places.D. They are interested in different culture and social customs.53. According the passage, which of the following countries has more tourists?A. ItalyB. GreeceC. FranceD. Spain54. The underlined part in the last sentence in Paragraph 3, one tourist for each person living in Spain means _.A. all the 37 million people living in Spain are tourists.B. every person living in Spain has to take care of a tourist C. every year almost as many tourists visit Spain as the population in SpainD. every family in Spain is visited by a tourist every year.55. According to the passage, which of the following might ruin the tourists fun at Mediterranean resort and beaches?A. Polluted waterB. Crowded busesC. Rainy weatherD. Traffic jams(D)In the second half of each year, many powerful storms are born in the tropical(热带的)Atlantic and Caribbean seas. Of these, only about half a dozen generate the strong, circling winds of 75 miles per hour or more that give them hurricane(飓风)status, and several usually make their way to the coast. There they cause millions of dollars of damage, and bring death to large numbers of people. The great storms that hit the coast start as innocent circling disturbances hundreds even thousands of miles out to sea. As they travel aimlessly over water warmed by the summer sun, they are carried westward by the trade winds. When conditions are just right, warm, moist(潮湿的)air flows in at the bottom of such a disturbance, moves upward through it and comes out at the top. In the process, the moisture in this warm air produces rain, and with it the heat is converted to energy in the form of strong winds. As the heat increases the young hurricane begins to turn in a counter-clockwise motion(逆时针移动). The average life of a hurricane is only about nine days, but it contains almost more power than we can imagine. The energy in the heat released by a hurricanes rainfall in a single day would satisfy the entire electrical needs of the United States for more than six months. Water, not wind, is the main source of death and destruction in a hurricane. A typical hurricane brings 6- to 12-inch downpours resulting in sudden floods. Worst of all is the powerful movement of the sea the mountains of water moving toward the low-pressure hurricane center. The water level rises as much as 15 feet above normal as it moves toward shore.56. When is a storm considered to be a hurricane? A. When it is accompanied by wind. B. When it is accompanied by both wind and rain. C. When its circling winds move at 75
