Unit 1 Tales of the unexplainedPeriod 1 Welcome to the unit & Reading设计思路:本节课为阅读课的第一课时,主要是解决对课文内容的理解和学习有关阅读技巧。本文的体裁是新闻报道,采用新闻报告的常规要点为切入口,从title和五个“W”一个“H”这几个方面构画出新闻报道清晰的框架结构并教学生如何阅读此类文章,如何在此类文章中捕捉所需要的信息。教学方法还是通过预测、略读和寻读等常规技巧,帮助学生了解课文内容。教学步骤的设计以培养说、读、写能力为主。Teaching aims:To make the students know about some mysterious and unexplained phenomena in the world. To develop their ability to make full use of resources to search for the information they need and share the information they get with others. To encourage the students to describe what they have known about the posters and what they are eager to know about the unexplained.To teach some useful words and expressions in this part.Teaching procedures:Step 1 Lead-in The world we live in is full of things that cannot be explained even by todays science. The following pictures show some of the unexplained. Can any of you say something about each of the pictures?Picture 1 UFOs UFO stands for Unidentified Flying Object. According to some witnesses, they are bright and move at a slow, steady speed with little noise. UFOs come in all shapes and sizes. Some are only small spots of light that move in strange patterns across the night sky. Some can be seen in the daytime. Theyre often said to be disk- or saucer-shaped.Picture 2 Yetis The Yeti has been called the “missing link”; half-man, half-beast. It is supposed to live in the highest mountain in the worldMount Qomolangma. So far, several sightings, mainly of footprints, have been reported by western explorers. Yet none of them have been supported with evidence in any way.Picture 3 Crop circles Crop circles often appear in spring or summer when wheat, barley(大麦), rye(燕麦) or maize(玉米) is growing in the fields. A crop circle is a large pattern created by flattening the crop. The first crop circle was discovered in England in 1647. They have been found in many places all over the world.Picture 4 Stonehenge in England Stonehenge stands on the open Salisbury Plain in the southwest of England. It is not a single structure but is made up of a series(系列) of earth, timber(木材), and stone structures which were built between 2800 and 1500 BC. And now it is a very famous tourist attraction with a long history in England.Step 2 Sharing information The three question on page 1. Students are encouraged to express their own opinions about each question. This part is designed to motivate their interest in the explained and develop their imagination as well.Step 3 Reading All these are the unexplained. We call them the unexplained just because they cannot be explained even with the help of todays advanced science and technology. Several students mentioned aliens in the information they shared with us. Just like them, many other people also think it is aliens that have done all this. But do you really believe the existence of aliens? Why? Today well learn a news report about a missing boy. People think that the appearance of the boy has something to do with aliens. But before coming to the story, lets check the answers to some exercises. Part A firstNow Part C1 on page 4.Step 4 Checking Check together with the students the exercises they have done (Part A). Get the students to check the answers with their partners. Then students raise any questions they may have (Part C). Step 5 Careful reading 1. The reading strategy.Now lets come to the text. The text well learn is an English news report. An English news report has its own format and characteristics. But how should we read a news report? How can we get the information we need from the report as quickly as possible? Lets first look at Reading Strategy on page 4. Go through this part and after that tell us how an English news report forms. You can use a figure to show the format of the report.Explain the format of a news report. 2. The title. What does the word “puzzled” suggest? 3. Get the students to read the first paragraph and find out the main idea. Then have them work in pairs to try to ask wh-questions. 4. Get the students to read the 2nd paragraph and find out the information needed to fill in the blanks. Friends:Witnesses: 5.
