It was very nice of you to speak of me like that. While I was listening, I had trouble believing that I was the man you were talking about. My thanks go out to all of you for being here at this dinner. I look around and say to myself, “ These people are my friends.” And you know how good it is to be among friends. Seven years ago, I became the tennis coach at this school. I can remember arriving here as if it were yesterday. When I started coaching, we only had a small team then, just three boys and two girls, and only one tennis court. So my first job was to increase the team. At the end of the first year, we had ten boys and six girls. And it seems like the team keeps getting stronger every year. I have been lucky to have some really good players to coach. Coaches love good players. Some great players from our school over the past years include Herbert Bradbury, Christopher Stanton and Emma Austen, all champions during the years they played. Among the players on our team now is Arthur Burney, perhaps the best of them all. Im sure you all join with me in wishing him good luck as he leaves for Capetown next week. He is our first student to enter the Capetown Junior International Tennis Tournament, where he will play against some of the best young tennis players in the world. Good luck, Ace!The time has come for me, however, to make a change. Recent health problems have made it difficult for me to continue coaching. I must say, Im looking forward to my retirement with mixed feelings. Im certainly ready for a long rest, but Im a bit worried about what Ill do with all my spare time. You might find me coming down to watch the games from time to time. If you can still remember me, you might say hello. Thank you everyone. Ill miss you all. 56. From the text, we know it is _. There were only 6 players when the man started his coaching work here. BAccording to Andrew, it never would have happened if he had not had a flat tyre on Highway 10 last night at about 7:30. He was on his way to attend a three-day sales meeting when he had the flat tyre. Unfortunately, he did not have a spare, so he pushed the car off the road, locked it up, and managed to thumb a ride back to Pine Grove. It was after eleven oclock when he finally got home, and it was then that his real problems started. When Andrew left home at about 5:30, he had told his wife not to expect him back until Thursday or Friday. Knowing that his wife was nervous about staying in the house alone at night, Andrew took the precaution of checking all the windows in the house to be sure they were locked, so that he could report to his wife that the house was secure. He convinced his wife that the house was burglar-proof, and that she would be perfectly safe, providing she bolted(闩上) the front door as soon as he drove away. Andrews only thought as he made his way in the dark to his front door was how surprised his wife was going to be to see him, since he was not supposed to be back until Thursday or Friday. He had forgotten about the bolt on the front door. When he turned his key in the lock and the door wouldnt budge(微微移动), he remembered the bolt. And he remembered that he had carefully locked all of the windows. Although Andrew didnt know it at the time, a next-door neighbor had seen him approaching the house and had watched him go up the steps to the front door. In the dark, it was impossible for the neighbor to recognize Andrew, and , besides, the neighbor knew that Andrew had gone out-of-town for a three- day meeting. As a matter o f fact, Andrew had asked the neighbor to keep an eye on the house while he was gone. Finding that he couldnt get in, Andrew began pounding (敲打) on the front door to get his wife to open the door. According to Andrew, however, his wife is a very sound sleeper, and he knew it was going to be hard to wake her up. In the meantime, because of all the noise he had been making, the neighbor was convinced that somebody was trying to break into the house, so she called the police. When we talked to Andrew at the country jail this morning, he said that he still didnt understand how the police managed to circle the house without his seeing them. He stated that he had decided the only way to get in was to break one of the dining room windows, and that he was about to hurl his briefcase into the window to break it when two of the officers grabbed him from behind. Andrew couldnt make the officers believe that he lived there, so they took him off to jail. Apparently, he did succeed in convincing them that they ought to wake up the woman in the house to check his story. But there was no answer when they knocked at the door. He tried to explain to them that his wife was a very sound sleeper, but they concluded there was nobody in the house. 60. As Andrew had a flat tyre on the way, he _. A. had to take another car to attend the meetingB. rode on a bike to attend the meetingC. asked for a lift to go back homeD. borrowed a car to go back home61. The police officers took Andrew off to jail because _.A. it was too late for them to contact Andrews wifeB. Andrew did not explain clearly why he broke into the house C. they thought it unnecessary to check Andrews storyD. they concluded that Andrews story was a complete inventionCAny foreigner who has tried to learn Chinese can tell how hard it is to master the tones required to speak and understand. And anyone who has tried to learn to play the violin or other instruments can report similar challenges. Now researchers have found that people with musical training have an easier time learning Chinese. Writing in the online edition of Nature Neuroscience, researchers from Northwestern University say that both skills draw on the same parts of the brain that help people discover changes in pitch(音调). One of the studys authors, Nina Kraus, said the findings suggested that studying music “ actually tunes our sensory system”. “This means that schools that want children to do well in languages should hesitate before cutting music programs,” Dr. Kraus said. She said music training might also help children with language problems. Mandarin(普通话) speakers have been shown to have a more complex encoding (编码) of pitch patterns in their brains than English speakers do. This is because in Mandarin and other Asian languages, pitch plays a central role. A single-syllable word can have several meanings depending on how it is intoned. For this study, the researchers looked at 20 non-Chinese speaking volunteers, half with no musical background and half who have studied an instrument for at least six years. As they were shown a movie, the volunteers also heard an audio tape of the Mandarin word “mi” in three of its meanings: squint, bewilder and rice. The researchers recorded activities in their brain stems to see how well they were processing the sounds. Those with a music background showed much more brain activities in response to the Chinese sounds. The lead author of the study, Patrick C. M. Wong, said it might work both ways. It appears that native speakers of tonal languages may do better at learning instruments. 63. When learning Chinese, a foreigner will find _.A. he has a difficult time learning music at the same timeB. he has an easier time learning music at the same timeC. it is hard to master the tones required
