Unit 5 Familiar Neighborhood Period One Teaching Aims:1. Study the new words and expressions in Reading.2. Finish the tasks in the Getting Ready.3. Grasp the key words in the Getting Ready.Teaching Procedures:Step one: Introduction(Group work)Show the students the topic sentence and ask students to use some examples to explain the sentence in their own words. They may first discuss it in their group and then select one person to state it before class. It is better to believe your neighbors than to fear and distrust them.Revise: It is better to do sth. than to do sth. Step two: Getting ReadyTask 1: Ask students to finish the form by themselves and show their answers to the class. If they meet some problems in filling the chart, dont give them the correct answer immediately and try to encourage them find the answers by themselves. Key and difficult words:vendor newspaper stand elevator regularly hair (dressing) style Task 2: If some of your students find it hard to fill the chart, give them four choices and try to find out the reason so that you can help them to improve it in future.A. you are shyB. you think it dangerous to talk to people you dont know very muchC. you think it unnecessary to get to know people around youD. you are so familiar with those people that you pay little attention to themRevise: danger/dangerous necessary/unnecessary be familiar with sb. pay (little) attention to sb. think it adj./n. to do sth.Task 3: Let students discuss task 3 in groups and invite one student out of each group to express his/her decision and reason as well.Revise: luggage/baggage offer a hand= give sb. a hand nod chat with sb.Period Two Teaching Aims:1. Ask students to skim the Reading passage and finish the task1,2 in the Comprehending.2.Read the Reading passage again and find the difficult and unfamiliar words and sentences. Teaching Procedures: 1. Show students a picture of girl waiting at the bus station around 8 a.m., a picture of jogger running at 3 oclock and a picture of a woman walking her dog early in the morning.2. Ask students to talk about the pictures and give necessary words and expressions.3. Skim the passage and get the general idea and decide which sentence is the topic sentence of the passage? A. From time to time, you might even greet one of these familiar strangers, as I did a few months ago.B. We may look at the world around us, but somehow we manage not to see it until whatever it is weve become accustomed to suddenly disappears.C. Ah, I thought, seeing the familiar stranger, Im home at last.4. Scan the passage and match those strangers mentioned with what they do . (see page 67 task 1) 5. Review the key and difficult points in the passage.2. Require students to finish Ex in the Word PowerTeaching Procedures:1. Finish all the tasks in Listening and Speaking 2. Grasp the key words and phrases in the Listening and SpeakingTeaching Procedures:1. Before listening to the short passage of Ex1.on Page 72, make sure that every student familiar with the material. Note: pay attention to some set expression: Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention please? May you enjoy your journey!2. Listen to the material three times. The students listen to the material with stopping twice, then for third times, you should stop when referring to the blank.3. Finish the Ex 3. on Page 73. Tell students that they are going to hear a man describing a thief twice and they should look at the pictures and tick the one they should think might be the thief and try to list his features on the books.4. If it is necessary, you can make them hear more than twice, at last encourage on students to describe the thief in complete sentences before the whole class.Period Six Teaching Aims:1. Study the short passage about describing peoples appearance.2. Ask students to imitate a passage like the shown one 3. Ask students to learn to correct each others writing. Teaching Procedures:1. Ask students to read the short passage about Angelina Jolie and underline the words used to describe he appearances. Revise: actor/actress model/modern average height weight/weigh shape square blouse jean2. Study the words and phrases of describing people in Ex. 2 on Page 74 and help students to finish filling the diagram .3.Complete the short passage in Ex 3 on Page 74 with the words and phrases given in Task 2.3 Ask students to imitate a passage like Task 3 to describe their
