Therefore, the teaching objectives and tasks should follow the student-centered principle. Also reading is taken as an interactive process among the printed text, the author and the writer. So its of crucial importance to activate Ss schema. Besides, T should help Ss with the understanding of words, the collection of information and the training of reading strategies.Therefore, the interactive model is adopted, and three stages are followed, namely, pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading.l Analysis of teaching materialThe passage, entitled Birthday Food Around the World is about different birthday food in different countries. Although the topic “food”, as one of the required topics in NEC, is familiar to them, some new words, such as blow out, cut up, get popular, candy, candle may bring difficulties to Ss understanding. Thus, guessing based on the context is adopted in this class to reduce the difficulty.Meanwhile, it is an argumentation with a clear structure, as is developed with topic sentences and examples. Thus, Ss can easily get the gist of it under the guidance of the T. l Analysis of the learnersAs Grade 7 students, they have accumulated certain vocabulary and language skills and can express themselves to some degree. Moreover, the topic of this passage birthday food is related to Ss lives, which will reduce the difficulty of reading comprehension.Most Ss enjoy discussions and willing to make reports. Thus, oral practicing activities will be designed in post-reading part. Language knowledge Know the pronunciation, intonation and the spellings of the following words and phrases: different, special, number, make a wish, blow out, lucky, bring good luck, candy, candle, get popular. Affect Learn to be proud of traditional Chinese culture;Learning strategies Work cooperatively and individually in various activities; Find what pronouns refer to by reading the sentences before it; Understand the basic structure of argumentative writing;Cultural awareness Learn to respect different cultures and be proud of traditional Chinese culture;l Anticipated difficulties and teaching focusAnticipated difficulties 1. Ss may have some difficulties in dividing the passage into three parts and get the clear structure of the passage. 2. Ss may have some difficulties in think of the special meanings of special food in traditional festivals.Teaching focusIn this class, food differences on birthday in different countries should be focused on, as well as the special meanings behind the food.l Teaching methods & Learning methods1. What do you do on your birthday?Q 2. What would you like to eat on your birthday?Justification It is to arouse Ss interest and set a friendly atmosphere to get closer to Ss. Meanwhile, it aims to activate Ss schema to the topic “birthday”. During the process, the new word “special” will be presented to overcome the obstacle of some new words.Step 2 While-reading (25 mins)【Activity 1: Predicting】(2 min)T asks Ss to look at the title and the picture to predict the main idea of the passage. Justification It aims to develop Ss prediction ability based on the title.【Activity 2: Skimming】(2 min) Ss read through the passage to find out the topic sentence to know the main idea.Justification It aims to develop Ss ability of reading through the passage quickly and finding topic sentences, which helps Ss to get the gist of the whole passage.【Activity 3: Read for the structure】 Ss are asked to read through the passage again to divide the passage into three parts. And choose the right structure pattern.Justification It aims to develop Ss ability of paragraph division.【Activity 4 Careful Reading】 (17 mins)Para 2 & 31. Read and fill in the chart.2.
