Develop the courage to overcome any difficulty.Part 1: Pre-Class Learners” SheetActivity 1: Individual Reading Your taskFinish reading “The Old Man and the Sea” English version during the coming Dragon Boat Festival holiday.Read the following tips to know how to read original English books. Assistances:Tip 1: Build the confidence.The novel appears in high school Chinese Text Book 3. The main characters and plots have been known by us. Besides, the language in Hemingways works is simple and common. Tip 2: Prepare “tools”(1) the English novel, a Kindle electronic reader, a computer or a smart phone.(2) a useful website for online reading: (3) a dictionary (4) a notebookTip 3: Make a reading planThe total words of the novel are almost 27,000. The general reading speed is 300 words per minute. Under ideal condition, the reading can be done in 90 minutes. Dont forget the time spent in looking up new words. Make your own 3-day reading plan.Tip 4: Look up new wordsDont refer to the dictionary every time you meet a new word. Neglect in t and go on reading. If the word appears again and again, look it up and write down the Chinese meaning and pronunciation.Tip 5: Write down sparkling lines.When finding a sentence or a small paragraph to your taste, write it down in your note book.Tip 6: Read for funThe best teacher is our interest in something. Extract 3: “Christ, I did not know he was so big.” he said, “ I will kill him though, in all his greatness and glory. “ Although it is unjust, but I will show him what a man can do and what a man endures.The old man dropped the line and put his foot on it and lifted the harpoon as high as he could and drove it down with all his strength, and more strength he had just gathered, into the fishs side just behind the great chest fin that rose high in the air to the altitude of the mans chest. Extract 4: An hour later he sighted the first shark. It was a fierce Mako, and it came in fast to slash with raking teeth at the dead marlin. With failing(不断衰弱的) strength the old man struck the shark with his harpoon. The Mako rolled and sank, carrying the harpoon with it and leaving the marlin mutilated and bloody. When the third appeared, he thrust at it with the knife, only to feel the blade snap as the fish rolled. He had gone out too far and the sharks had beaten him. He knew they would leave him nothing but the stripped skeleton of his great catch. “But a man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” II Creative Writing1.
