It was divided into three parts; one is told by poor black worker Elias he described Mandela in his own eyes. Then is a listening material about Elias joined ANC Youth League as soon as he could when Mandela organized it to struggle for the equal right to the whites. The last part is talked about when Elias in Robben Island he got the help from Mandela, and after ANC came to power in 1994, he returned to Robben Island as a guider. Considering the acceptability of students, we divided the whole unit into four class hours. In the first class hour, we will just finish the first part, warming-up and pre-reading and reading. For warming-up, there are many words about some characters of man no matter which are bad or good. We should let students know what qualities a great man should have. And then of pre-reading, there are some pictures of great man, which demand students figure out who is great man. As for reading, which tells us the life of Elias, through it, we have a plain knowledge of Mandela. I. Teaching goals 1. Figure out what qualities a great man should have, and then improve yourselves.2. Have a good knowledge of the modern hero-Nelson Mandela, learn from him.3. Thats an excellent ideaDifficult points: 1) How to tell an important person from a great person. 2) Let the students know how to choose a great person in their eyes and write a short passage. 3) The characteristic of the writing of this unit.III.Teaching methodstask-based teaching listening and fast reading asking and answering, explaining and practicing reading and discussing careful reading. Asking and answering activity to check the students understanding of the text. Individual, pair or group work. IV.Teaching aidsMultimedia blackboard V.Teaching procedures1. Warming-up: Learn some adjective words to describe a man.2. Pre-reading: From these pictures and texts find their common points of a great man.3. Reading: Study this passage, knowing the story between Mandela and Elias. Concluded the character of Mandela in Elias sight.4. Post-reading: Retell the story and give the impression of Mandela.5. Homework: Writing a short passage of a great man in their eyes. Step1 Warming-up1. Greeting2. Lead-in: I think all of you have your own idol(偶像,崇拜的人),so now please tell me who are they and whats his/her job? Why do you like he/she?(There are must all kinds of answer, write down the adjectives the students used on blackboard)Now, look, there are some words. And then after recognizing these words, Discuss with your partner what qualities does a great man have?(During they discussion, show some pictures on screen)Step2 Pre-readingNow, turn your eyes to the screen, there are some pictures and read the text under the pictures, then can you tell me what kind of person they are, famous people or great people? Lead the Ss use these sentences: agree / dont agreeI think / dont think. I prefer.In my opinion.Im afraid.T: Do you think all of them are great person?ST: Which same qualities do you think they have?ST: Which qualities do you think is the most important?And then, give the useful phrase. Let Ss familiar with it. (见ppt.)The last picture is Nelson Mandela. Add more information about Mandela. (If you want to know more about Mandela, we will start our new class-Elias stories)Step3 Reading1. Fast reading Get the students to comprehend the passage quickly and accurately and meanwhile help the Ss to form a good habit of reading. Read the passage on P34 to get the answers to Part 1 and Part 2 of comprehending.T: Now I will give you about 3 min read the passage quickly, and find how many parts does this text can be divided into? Give the general idea of each part.Part 1 (Para. 1-2)The life of Elias before he met Nelson Mandela.Part 2 (Para 3-5)The change of Elias life after he met Nelson Mandela and what Mandela did.T: Then another 2 min for you please finish the exercise on page 35 of exercises 1 and 2.After the exercise.2Extensive readingT: Please read the first part carefully, and answer my questions.1. Who was Elias? Elias is a poor black worker2. Where did the story happen?In South Africa.3. When did Elias first meet Nelson Mandela?When he was twelve years old.4. What did Mandela do to help black people?He offered guidance to poor black people on their legal problems.5. Why did Elias have to leave school?Because his family couldnt afford the school fees and the bus fare.6. What kind of work did Elias get? Why did he worry about his work? He got a job in a gold mine. Because he didnt have a passbook. T: And same as the first part read the second part carefully, I will give you some exercises of it, so finish it.1. Why did Elias become more hopeful about his future?Mandela helped him get the correct papers so he could stay in Johannesburg.2. According to the part2, what was the situation for black people in South Africa? Black people had no vote They couldnt get jobs they wanted. They were sent to the poorest areas where no one could grow food.3. How did the ANC Youth League fight against the government? First, they broke the law in a peaceful way, but this was not allowed. Then they decided to answer violence with violence.T: So now you must have a good knowledge of the story, and tell me who do you think should be the hero in this passage, Elias or Mandela? Why?
