The work I do at Sainsburys is very physical like stacking shelves. I am lucky because the amount I lift at work is nothing compared with the weight I lift in the gym. I know I have the strength to bear it.I am originally from Nigeria. I came here when I was seven. Money was always tight. My parents gave me everything I needed, but there was no money for luxuries. I worked hard at school though and, with the help of professors, I got the best A-level grades in my class.Unfortunately, though I had applied for settled British residential status the Home Office waited until I was in sixth form to approve my application. That meant I was not eligible for a student loan. The only way I could afford to go to university was that I got a job that would pay for all my living costs and my parents paid for my tuition fees.I dont have much time to socialize because of my job. Ideally, Id like to have more time to study so I can excel at my course. Yes, I have a lot on my plate, but working hard isnt new for me. Growing up, my parents cultivated in me the importance of working hard for what I want in life.My dream is to get a job in the NHS. But now, Im just focused on trying to get the best grades I can. Its creators hope the plane will make the first around-the-world journey without any fuel. The plane is called Solar Impulse 2. It has one seat and is made from carbon fiber. The plane weighs only as much as a car but its wings are wider than a Boeing 747. The planes wings measure 72 meters across. Those wings include 17,000 solar units, or cells, which capture the suns energy. The energy allows the plane to fly day and night. Two Swiss scientists built the plane. Bertrand Piccard is also an explorer who made the first non-stop flight around the world in a balloon. Andre Borschberg is an engineer and trained fighter pilot. The scientists say they are not trying to alter the airplane industry. Instead, they want to show that new energy sources and technologies can achieve what some say is impossible. “We want to show we can fly day and night in an aircraft without a drop of fuel.” Mr. Piccard said. Some parts of the trip will require the pilots to be in the tiny plane for five to six days and nights in a row. So it is good that the pilots seat is also a toilet. The planes route begins in the United Arab Emirates. The pilots also plan stops in Oman, India, and China. They will cross the Pacific Ocean, stop in the United States, and continue over southern Europe or North Africa. They plan to arrive back in the United Arab Emirates in late July or early August. Internet viewers can go to the Solar Impulse website to see the planes location and listen to broadcasts from the pilots. 32. Why does the plane have wider wings? A. It can fly faster and land safely.B. It can get the suns energy easily. C. It may look like a Boeing 747.D. It will make the plane appear larger.33. What does the underlined word “alter” in Para 2 probably mean? A. Improve.B. Change.C. Rebuild.D. Destroy.34. What do we know about the trip made in the plane? A. It will take five to six days and nights.B. It is a non-stop flight around the world. C. It is broadcast live on the Internet.D. It doesnt include North America.35. What does the passage mainly talk about?A. Solar energy waits to be fully explored. B. A newly-built plane consumes no energy.C. A good way to save energy has been found. D. A solar-powered plane will travel the globe. 第二节.( 共5小題; 每小題2分,满分10分 )根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。New research helps to explain why screaming is disturbing and useful.Screams, like those we hear in horror movies, have a special quality that separates them from other noises we make and hear. These screams are recognized by people all over the world. 36 Every kid in every culture screams. Every adult in the context of a true fear responds with screams. So its just a feature of the human mind and brain.David Poeppel is a neuroscientist at New York University. He wondered why screams were recognized the same way by people all around the world. So, he and his colleagues set up an experiment. They recorded screams from movies and from volunteers who took part in the research. 37 Instead, they measured how quickly the sounds in the scream changed in volume. It was in this area-the change in volume that screams stand apart from other sounds. When the volume of a sound changes that quickly it has a quality called “roughness”. 38 David Poeppel and his team found that car alarms, sirens, and alarm clocks also have this quality, this “roughness”.The scientists then studied how this roughness changed brain activity. They asked the volunteers to listen to different types of screams and alarms in an MRI scanner. The researchers found that the greater roughness of a sound, the more it activates the amygdala(扁桃腺). 39 The amygdala acts like a gauge(计量器) that says wow, this sound has a lot of roughness in it; thats particularly alarming and scary. Screams, it turns out, are a direct link to the part of our brain that tells us whether we should be afraid or not. 40 Now, we know why a scream gets so much attention, so quickly.A. A scream is to say Im in trouble and I need help.B. The more roughness a sound has, the more worrying it is.C. The amygdala is an area deep in the brain that answers to fear.D. Screams played a very important evolutionary role in our survival.E. The scientists, however, did not measure the screams for loudness.F. People of all cultures and languages hear the same thing in a scream: fear.G. People who hear these rough sounds are also more likely to react to them very quickly.第三部分:英语知识运用第一节:完形填空(共15小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)The measure of a mans real character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.-Thomas Macaulay。Some thirty years ago, I was studying in a public school in New York.
