bloomoccasionally, the normally dry mojave desert, sonoran desert, and chihuahuan desert will burst into a carpet of yellow, purple, and pink flowers in spring. this is a super bloom, and it happens if there is significant rainfall between september and november. theres one wild flower bloom every 5.3 years on average, and a super bloom on average once every 11.2 years.where to go:death valley national park, california, the usawhen to go:februarymarchwatching rockets launchingevery launch is very impressive and exciting because you dont know what will happen until the last moment. you hear the fire and fury for several minutesseeing a launch in person is a billion times better than watching on tv. the current hot ticket, though, is going to watch a spacex reusable rocket launch, then land back at cape canaveral.where to go:wallops flight facility, virginia or kennedy space center, floridabest time to go:check www.kennedyspacecenter. com or enjoy a never-ending lightning stormthink lightning never strikes twice? the odds are more generous over the mouth of the catatumbo river at lake maracaibo, venezuela, which hosts lightning storms for up to 297 nights a year, thanks to its unique geographical location. “watching the catatumbo lightning is an experience you will get nowhere else,” says jonas piontek, a german photographer who has travelled there twice to capture the storms. “you are basically isolated from everyone, no network, no internet,no real civilization around. its just you and nature, and one of the best shows on earth.”where to go:catatumbo camp, venezuelawhen to go:octobernovember1.what causes a super bloom to happen in the desert?a.steady rainfall in a year.b.occasionally rainfall in winter.c.heavy rainfall in springd.abnormal rainfall in autumn.2.if you want to escape from reality, you can go to .a.mojave desertb.wallops flight facilityc.catatumbo campd.death valley national parkbpeople love spreading information and sharing opinions. you can see this online: every day, 4 million new blogs are written, 80 million new photos are uploaded and 616 million new tweets are released into cyberspace. we experience a burst of pleasure when we share our thoughts, and this drives us to communicate. it is a useful feature of our brain, because it ensures that knowledge, experience and ideas do not get buried with the person who first had them, and that as a society we benefit from the products of many minds.of course, in order for that to happen, merely sharing is not enough. we need to cause a reaction. each time we share our opinions and knowledge, it is with the intention of having an impact on others. heres the problem, though: we approach this task from inside our own heads. but if we want to have an impact on others, we need to understand what goes on inside their heads.what determines whether you affect the way others think and behave or are ignored? you may assume that numbers and statistics are what you need to change their point of view. well, experiments have pointed to the reality that people are not driven by facts. they are not enough to alter belief, and they are practically useless for motivating action. consider climate change: there are mountains of data indicating that humans play a role in warming the globe, yet approximately 50% of the worlds population doesnt believe it. what about health?hundreds of studies show that exercise is good for you and people believe this to be so, yet this knowledge fails miserably in getting many to step on a treadmill(跑步机).the problem with an approach that prioritizes information is that it ignores the core of what makes us human:our motives, our fears, our hopes, our desires, our prior belief. in fact, the tsunami of information we are receiving today can make us even less sensitive to data because weve become accustomed to finding support for absolutely anything we want to believe with a simple click of the mouse. instead, our need for agency, our craving to be right, and a longing to feel part of a group really count. it is those motivations that we need to tap into to make a change, whether within ourselves or in others.3.people love spreading information and sharing opinions because.a.they often think their thoughts are superior to othersb.they can provide a lasting pleasure of communicationc.they want to affect the behaviour and belief of othersd.they are able to understand others inner world better4.the examples of climate change and health indicate that.a.data and logical thinking arent bound to change mindsb.numbers and statistics are persuasive enough to othersc.peoples deeds and minds dont agree with each otherd.people are fed up with huge amounts of data and studies5.what does the writer stress in the passage?a.behaviour determines our belief.b.our desires shape what we believe.c.we shouldnt force our ideas on others.d.too much information serves no purpose.任务型阅读ive always been an optimist and i suppose that is rooted in my belief that the power of creativity and intelligence can make the world a better place.for as long as i can remember, ive loved learning new things and solving problems. so when i sat down at a computer for the first time in seventh grade, i was hooked. it was a clunky old teletype machine and it could barely do anything compared to the computers we have today. but it changed my life.when my friend paul allen and i started microsoft 30 years ago, we had a vision of “a computer on every desk and in every home”, which probably sounded a little too optimistic at a time when most computers were the size of refrigerators. but we believed that personal computers would change the world. and they have.and after 30 years, im still as inspired by computers as i was back in seventh grade.i believe that computers are the most incredible tool we can use to feed our curiosity and inventivenessto help us solve problems that even the smartest people couldnt solve on their own.computers have transformed how we learn, giving kids everywhere a window into all of the worlds knowledge. theyre helping us build communities around the things we care about and to stay close to the people who are important to us, no matter where they are.like my friend warren buffett, i feel particularly lucky to do something every day that i love to do. he calls it “tap-dancing to work”. my job at microsoft is as challenging as ever, but what makes me “tap-dance to work” is when we show people something new, like a computer that can recognize your handwriting or your speech, or one that can store a lifetimes worth of photos, and they say, “i didnt know you could do that with a pc!”but for all the cool things that a person can do with a pc, there are lots of other ways we can put our creativity and intelligence to work to improve our world. there are still far too many people in the world whose most basic needs go unmet. every year, for example, millions of people die from diseases that are easy to prevent or treat in the developed world.i believe that my own good fortune brings with it a responsibility to give back to the world. my wife, melinda, and i have committed to improving health and education in a way that can help as many people as possible.as a father, i believe that the death of a child in africa is no less poignant or tragic than the death of a child anywhere else, and that it doesnt take much to make an immense difference in these childrens lives.im still very much an optimist, and i believe that progress on even the worlds toughest problems is possibleand its happening every day. were seeing new drugs for deadly diseases, new diagnostic tools, and new attention paid to the health problems in the developing world.im excited by the possibilities i see for medicine, for education and, of course, for technology. and i believe that through our natural inventiveness, creativity and willingness to solve tough problems, were going to make some amazing achievements in all these areas in my lifetime.fueling our creativityoutlinesupporting detailsbeingenthusiastic1 , i believe the power of creativity and intelligence can make the world better.an old teletype machine, which made me 2 in the computer, changed my life.3 what sounded crazy, paul allen and i dreamt of there being a computer for everyone.for 3 decades, i still have a deep 4 for the computer.beingdevotedi feel lucky to do something challenging at microsoft, and i have a sense of 5 when we present people something new.computers are the most incredible tool, and there is no6 in terms of problem solving.computers are transforming how we learn,7our horizons wherever we are.being8im bound to give my fortune to the world just
