It might understand more than you think.A border collie(牧羊狗) named Rico recognizes the names of about 200 objects, say researchers in Germany. The dog also appears to be able to learn new words as easily as a 3-year-old child. Its word-learning skills are as good as those of a parrot or chimpanzee(黑猩猩).In one experiment, the researchers took all 200 items that Rico is supposed to know and divided them into 20 groups of 10 objects. Then the owner told the dog to go and fetch one of the items and bring it back. In four tests, Rico got 37 out of 40 commands right. As the dog couldnt see anyone to get clues, the scientists believe Rico must understand the meanings of certain words. In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never seen before and put it in a room with seven toys whose names the dog already knew. The owner then told Rico to fetch the object, using a word the dog had never heard before. The correct object was chosen in seven out of l0 tests, suggesting that the dog had workedout the answer by process of elimination(排除法). A month later, Rico remembered half of the new names, which is even more impressive. Rico is thought to be smarter than the average dog. For one thing, Rico is a border collie, a breed(品种)known for its mental abilities. In addition, the 9-year-old dog has been trained to fetch toys by their names since the age of nine months. Its hard to know if all dogs understand at least some of the words we say. Even if they do, they cant talk back. Still, it wouldnt hurt to sweet-talk your dog every now and then. You might just get a big, wet kiss in return!41. From paragraph 2 we know that _ . A. animals are as clever as human beings B. dogs are smarter than parrots and chimpanzees C. chimpanzees have very good word-learning skills D. dogs have similar learning abilities as 3-year-old children42. Both experiments show that . A. Rico is smart enough to get all commands right B. Rico can recognize different things including toys C. Rico has developed the ability of learning mathematics D. Rico wont forget the names of objects once recognizing them43. Which of the following statements is true? A. The purpose of the experiments is to show the border collies mental abilities. B. Rico has a better memory partly because of its proper early training. C. The border collie is world-famous for recognizing objects. D. Rico is born to understand its owners commands.44. What does the writer want to tell us? A. To train your dog. B. To talk to your dog. C. To be friendly to your dog. D. To be careful with your dog.BIn 1939 two brothers, Mac and Dick McDonald, started a drive-in restaurant in San Bernadino, California. They carefully chose a busy corner for their location. They had run their own businesses for years, first a theater, then a barbecue(烤肉)restaurant, then another drive-in. But in their new operation, they offered a new, shortened menu: French fries, hamburgers, and sodas. To this small selection they added one new idea: quick service, no waiters or waitresses, and no tips.Their hamburgers sold for fifteen cents. Cheese was another four cents. Their French fries and hamburgers had a remarkable uniformity(一致性),for the brothers had developed a strict routine(程序) for the preparation of their food, and they insisted on their cooks sticking to their routine .Their new drive-in became surprisingly popular, particularly for lunch. People drove up by the hundreds during the busy noontime. The self-service restaurant was so popular that the brothers had allowed ten copies of their restaurant to be opened. They were content with this modest success until they met Ray Kroc.Kroc was a salesman who met the McDonald brothers in 1954, when he was selling milkshake-mixing machines. He quickly saw the special attraction of the brothers fast-food restaurants and bought the right to franchise(特许经营) other copies of their restaurants. The agreement struck included the right to duplicate(复制) the menu, the equipment, even their red and white buildings with the golden arches(拱门).Today McDonalds is really a household name. In 1976, McDonalds had over $ l billion in total sales. Its first twenty-two years in one of the most surprising success stories in modern American business history.45This passage mainly talks about.AThe development of fast food servicesBThe business careers of Mac and Dick McDonaldCRay Krocs business talentDHow McDonalds became a billion-dollar business46Mac and Dick managed all of the following businesses except.Aa cinema Ba drive-in Ca theater Da barbecue restaurant47We may infer from this passage that.AMac and Dick McDonald never became wealthy for they sold their idea to Kroc.BThe place the McDonalds chose was the only source of the great popularity of their drive-in CRay Kroc was a good businessmanDForty years ago there were lots of fast-food restaurants48The passage suggests that.ARay Kroc was the close partner of the McDonald brothersBMac and Dick McDonald became broken after they sold their ideas to Ray KrocCCreativity is an important element of business successDCalifornia is the best place to go into businessC Many people go to school for an education. They learn languages, history, geography, physics, chemistry and mathematics. Others go to school to learn a skill so that they can make a living. School education is very important and useful. Yet no one can learn everything they want to know. The teachers job is to show his students how to learn. He teaches them how to read and how to think. So, much more is to be learned outside school by the students themselves. It is always more important to know how to study by oneself than to memorize some facts or a formula. It is usually quite easy to learn a certain fact in history or a formula in mathematics. But it is very difficult to use a formula in working out a maths problem. Great scientists, such as Einstein, Newton and Galileo didnt get anything from school. But they were all so successful. They invented so many things for mankind. The reason for their success is that they knew how to study. They read books that were not taught at school. They worked hard all their lives, wasting not a single moment. They would ask many questions as they read and they did thousands of experiments. Above all, they knew how to use their brains.49. Many people go to school for an education. A teachers job is mainly to train his students to master the ability of _.A. learning by themselvesB. making a livingC. reading and thinkingD. studying all the subjects51.
