一、校园生活篇Topic 1 Volunteer Your Time Faced with the question whether it is worthwhile to spend a year or two voluntee¬ring in western China, many college students would probably shake their heads, seeing it as a waste of valuable learning time. However, I will give an affirmative answer without hesitation, because this experience can apparently benefit us in many ways. First, it is a great opportunity for us to apply the knowledge we have acquired at college. Different from temporary part-time jobs, a longer volunteer work experience is truly fulfilling and rewarding. As English majors, we can learn to use and teach the language effectively in real classes; as education majors, we can experiment with those textbook theories in helping manage a school or instruct the younger; those who study engineering can take this chance to turn their ideas and skills into running machines, new bridges and broad roads. From this experience, we will better understand our schoolwork and even build up considerable expertise in our chosen fields. Second, we can gain a great sense of satisfaction by making contributions in an underdeveloped region. Right now, the western China is suffering from both the short¬age of resources and that of talents in its course of development. If we can step into the needed roles by simply sacrificing a year or two, we will be able to make some differ¬ence to the situation as a whole. Imagine how proud you will be when telling your fami¬ly and friends how you have taught the illiterate to read, and how you have helped to change the look of a backward town. Compared with the great sense of pride you feel, a years time is just a small price to pay. Third,we can establish a deep friendship with local people. On the one hand, if you truly love and help the people you work with, they naturally love and help you back. Take a senior I know for example, who served two months as a teacher in a dry northwestern town. During the period of water shortage, both his students and their parents voluntarily kept water for him, sometimes despite their own need. Recalling his days there, he said they were not easy but he could not help missing them. Probably many volunteers would feel the same as him. While we are giving care, support and help, we often get back more including a lasting friendship. Therefore,I will readily sign up to volunteer in the western China despite various challenges I may meet. Think of the differences we can make there and the changes this experience can make to us, why not walk out of the ivory tower and step onto the promising land of our country?Topic 2 Should Network Games Be Banned in College? It is a prevailing practice that university students play network games in their spare time for relaxation. Some teachers and parents hold the negative opinion that many students are so obsessed with network games that they play truant, and others even commit a crime for one reason or another. Others dont agree. As far as I am concerned ,the critical point is whether the students can keep a balance between study and games. Some thought that playing network games will cost a lot of time and energy, which should otherwise be devoted to their academic study. After all, time is limited for college students and its the most fundamental duty for them to study and lay a solid foundation in knowledge. And the content of the network games is sometimes violent and bloody, which is not suitable for students. It is also reported that some students are so addictive to the network games that they even dont go to class and sit in front of the computers all day long. Their worries and considerations are justified, but we should not give up eating for choking. First, life in college is not easy. Students have to work hard to learn and at the same time they have much pressure from their parents or others. Playing network games will help them to relax and be immersed in a virtual world. The rest of heart is important in the modern society. Second, students will learn more about team¬work in the network games. People in a team cooperate and help each other to win the game. The experience is vivid and works better than any lecture. Third, students meet different people on the Internet, and learn to get along with them in different ways. It may endow the very student with the ability to establish a better personal relationship with other people, which means a lot when they enter the society. To sum up,for university students, the priority should be given to academic study. A poor performance in achievement tests wont make us competitive in the future. But all work no play makes Jack a dull boy. Appropriate rest and relaxation in the network games world will refresh a person and help him to learn something. The college students are all adults, and they know clearly what they should do and what they shouldnt, and have the ability to control their behaviors. So they must strike a balance between study and network games, and give due weight to the studies. Nowadays, most universities require students to pay for their education, and the tuition fees have been staying so high that some families cannot afford them. What do you think of the phenomenon? Write an essay of about 400 words on the following topicTopic 3 Should Universities Charge High Tuition Fees? Nowadays, most universities require students to pay for their education, and the tuition fees have been staying very high. Some people take the development of the universities into consideration and support the high fees, while others think the high cost of university education is a heavy burden for many families. As far as I am concerned, universities are not institutions for profits, which should be places for excellent students to learn and further study equally, so they should not charge high tuition fees that some families cannot afford. In the first place, the high tuition fees make the families save money for the chil¬dren instead of consuming. A university student will need 12,000 yuan each year on average, which is almost the income of a couple who are wage earners. In other words, a family with an average income will spend their long-term hard-earned savings, or they will be indebted. Whats worse, most families incomes in our country are below the average level. The high fees make the people save money for the childrens education even before they are born. In the second place, the high tuition fees will deprive the children from poor fami¬lies of their right of education. Entering universities on their abilities is the only hope for the poor students to change their destiny. But the increasingly higher tuition fees make it impossible. The statistic shows that there were 60% 70% students coming from the country areas when the charging system was not introduced. But now the percentage is only 30% or so. The universities will become the paradise of children from rich families, and the poor students will be forced to leave. Finally, it will be much more difficult for the graduates to find jobs. Driven by the profits of high tuition fees, universities recruit more and more students year by year. The outcome of expansion leads to the low standard of enrollment and low quali¬ty of education. The supply exceeds demand ; there are not so many jobs for the graduates, so most of them can not find jobs when getting out of school. All in all, high tuition fees in the universities will influence the development of the society and harm the interests of students. The universities should charge reasonable tuition fees, provide equal opportunities for students and take the responsibility of molding the future of our nation.Topic 4 范文呈现 Can College Village Heads Plan Really Help? Due to the Grand College Enrollment Plan, the number of university graduates has been on the increase since the central government started implementing the plan. Though the plan helps improve our national quality,it creates pressure for the job markets. With so many college students coming out at a time, many graduates have difficulties in finding suitable jobs. In order to create more jobs, the government encourages college graduates to work in villages of our country with a view that rural administration will be strengthened at the same time. As a result, tens of thousands of college graduates have been appointed as village officials in the rural areas. It appears that this plan helps alleviate the pressure caused by graduate employment, but I do not think the plan will work in the long run. Firstly, after serving as village officials in the rural areas for two years, the majority of those college village officials will start to look for jobs in the job market again,ag¬gravating the pressure of the job market. Some may argue that the number of those vil¬lage officials who enter the job market again is balanced by the number of new college graduates who would be appointed as village officials. The truth is that while those students have spent two years in the rural areas, they do not gain enough experience in the corporate world and are likely to forget what they have learnt in college. In this sense, they are not guaranteed to find decent jobs again. Besides, when working in the rural areas, these students with higher degrees are respected by village people, and are likely to get accustomed to feeling superior to people around them. One can imagine they would probably be frustrated when they work with those who hold the same college degrees or even higher degrees. Secondly, when the supply of college graduates and the demand of our society are unbalanced, the imbalance can be obtained by increasing available jobs or decreasing the supply of college graduates, which means the reduction of college enrollment. Given the fact that the economy slows down recently,it is difficult to create more jobs. While offering good terms for graduates such as well-paid salary and residential certifi¬cate guarantee, the government can create more jobs in the short term, but does not provide long-term remedy. In this sense, the plan does not solve the fundamental imbalance between the supply and the demand of college graduates. In sum,the plan to encourage college graduates to work in the rural areas can only provide a temporary remedy for the job market. I think the government should recog¬nize the fundamental imbalance and find the way back to elite education.Topic 5范文呈现 Should We Ban Internet Slang in News and Formal Documents? Nowadays,we frequently read the words in the newspapers, magazines or on the Internet, like PK dinosaurs and so on. These are all Internet slang terms. Whether to allow or forbid these terms in news and formal documents has become a hot topic as the ban is introduced in Shanghai. The public holds different views on the regulation. From where I stand,as the inevitable result of social development,Internet slang should not be banned in news and formal documents. Firstly, many Internet slang terms are widely spread and commonly used among young people. Since we can find them used here and there, there are good reasons for them to exist in our language. Indeed, Internet slang terms tend to be short, simple, and catchy, so it is easy to think and use them to express our meanings. Even a little child can understand, remember and speak a few of those words. Moreover, with the dramatic increase of netizens and rapid expansion of cyber-communities,the language they use has formed such an influential force in real life that many people, especially the youth, think it fashionable to talk with some Net terms. As Internet slang is taking root in our language, it is not really possible to forbid its use completely. Secondly, there is no need to stop using new words created online. Some Internet words, such as “download“ , “linkand homepage, are now used regularly. There is nothing wrong with them. Society is always changing, and language needs to keep up. Chinese should be able to absorb new words that are useful for speakers. In addition, the newspapers should tell people whats going on in real life. Though coming from virtual world, Internet slang largely derives from real communications between people, reflecting their true thoughts and serving their actual needs of expression. Then, why cant it be used in the news? Hence, it is not necessary to ban the Internet slang in the newspapers and formal documents. In addition, it is not practical to enforce the ban. How would the local authorities monitor the media efficiently and effectively? How should the government punish those who break the regulation? There are scores of newspapers and magazines and millions of formal documents produced every day in a big city. Supervising the use of language in all of them is too time-consuming and expensive, if not impossible. Why not save the energy for something that is more crucial to peoples life? Of course, misuse or too much use of Internet slang in news arid formal documents could bring a number of problems. However, the above discussion indicates that we should not and could not forbid its use totally. The better course of action is to be more careful when using them as we are with the choice of other words, considering its particular feature and style. 摘改自 Perspective ,21st CenturyTopic 6范文呈现 Should Companies Only Focus on Experience? As one researcher observed,“ At present many companies do not trust new graduates ,who may have learned mountains of theories but lack practical abilities., For many companies, they would like to rank working experience as top requirement in their recruitment programs. But,as a matter of fact, college students have spent years in taking compulsory courses and selective courses, how can they accumulate required experience in college? They can not help wondering whether companies should lay their emphasis on experience when recruiting college graduates. As for me, companies focus on experience is short-sighted,and hence companies should not only lay stress on experience. Firstly, what lies behind their focus on experience is the motivation to cut expenditure in employee training. Another consideration is that experienced employees can produce immediate profits. For those employers, they are more interested in making money in the present than cultivating talents for the long-term benefits. They seem to lack long-term strategies of company development. Generally speaking, prestigious companies that have lasted for a dozen years, even hundreds of years, always have a systematic plan for talents training. They would like to bear the burden of new employee training expenditure for the long-term benefits. How can we expect those companies that are apathetic to recruit college graduates to reap profits in the future withoutenough supply of talented employees? Secondly, while the recruitment of experienced employees can produce short-term profits, it is hard for those experienced employees to identify with the new companies culture, and therefore, companies have to suffer from high employee attrition rates. Companies cultural identities have been considered increasingly important to maximize productivity by holding both employees and employers together. Loyal employees are willing to stand by their companies in times of ups and downs. When employees frequently come and go,companies have to bear new hiring costs, costs of lost productivity ,cost of knowledge, skills and contacts that the person who is leaving is taking with them out of the previous companies. Obviously, the total expenditure of recruitment of experienced employees in the long term is likely to transcend the expenditure of training loyal employees in the beginning. In sum, companies focus on experience is indicative of the motivation of producing immediate profits by cutting expenditure in training inexperienced college students. In the long run, companies are likely to bear more cost of high attrition rates. Therefore, companies should not only emphasize on experience and should give opportunities to college graduates so lliat they can reap long-term profits.Topic 7范文呈现 Should We Return to Complex Chinese Characters? As one famous professor stated,“ One can only appreciate the beauty of ancient Chinese literature through the complex Chinese characters. ” What the professor wants to convey is that complex Chinese characters are manifestation of traditional Chinese aesthetics. However, since the foundation of the PRC,China began to adopt simplified Chinese characters, so that illiteracy can be more easily eliminated. Undoubtedly, the introduction of simplified Chinese characters contributes to Chinas modernization. So when a member of the national committee of CPPCC proposed that we should return to complex Chinese characters, ongoing debates ensued with vehemence. Personally, it is impractical to return to complex Chinese characters, but individuals can voluntarily make efforts to know comp
