James Watt had made the worlds first widely used steam engine. He had no way of telling people exactly how powerful it was, for at that time there were no units for measuring power. Watt decided to find out how much work one strong horse could do in one minute. He called that unit one horsepower. With this unit he could measure the work his steam engine could do. He discovered that a horse could lift a 3300-pound weight 10 feet into the air on one minute. His engine could lift a 33-pound weight 100 feet in one minute. Because his engine did ten times as much work as the horse, Watt called it a ten horsepower engine. 1、The passage says that Watt made the first widely used steam engine. A:T B:F答案 APassage 2Paper is one of the most important products ever invented by man. Wide spread use of written language would not have been possible without some cheap and practical material to write on. The invention of paper meant that more people could be educated because more books could be printed and distributed. Together with the printing press, paper provided an extremely important way to communicate knowledge. How much paper do you use every year? Probably you cannot answer that question quickly. In 1900 the worlds use of paper was about one kilogram for each person a year. Now some countries use as much as 50 kilograms of paper for each person a year. Countries like the United States, England and Sweden use more paper than other countries.Paper, like many other things that we use today, was first made in China. In Egypt and the West, paper was not very commonly used before the year 1400. The Egyptians wrote on a kind of material made of a water plant. Europeans used parchment for many hundreds of years. Parchment was very strong; it was made from the skin of certain young animals. We have learnt of the most important facts of European history from records that were kept on parchment. (208 words)6. What makes one person a genius, like the brilliant Albert Einstein, and another person a fool? Are people born intelligent or stupid, or is intelligence the result of where and how you live? These are very old questions and the answers to them are still not clear. We know, however, that just being born with a good mind is not enough. In some ways, the mind is like a leg or an arm muscle. It needs exercise. Mental exercise is particularly important for young children. Many child psychologists (心理学家) think that parents should play with their children more often and give them problems to think about. The children are then more likely to grow up bright and intelligent. If, on the other hand, children are left alone a great deal with nothing to do, they are more likely to become dull and unintelligent. Parents should also be careful with what they say to young children. According to some psychologists, if parents are always telling a child that he or she is a fool or an idiot, then the child is more likely to keep doing silly and foolish things. So it is probably better for parents to say very positive things to their children, such as That was a very clever thing you did. or You are such a smart child. 11、The word intelligent in the 1st paragraph probably mean bright.A:T B:F答案A 12、According to the context we can guess that a genius is a normal person while an idiot is a funny person.A:T B:F答案B13、A person born with a good brain and putting it into active use is more likely to become a genius.A:T B:F答案A14、It is better for parents to praise and encourage their children more often.A:T B:F答案A15、Intelligence is obviously the result of where and how you live.A:T B:F答案BPassage 4 Global WarmingGlobal warming may or may not be the great environmental crisis of the 21st century, but regardless of whether it is or isnt we wont do much about it. We will argue over it and may even, as a nation, make some fairly solemn- sounding commitments to avoid it. But the more dramatic and meaningful these commitments seem, the less likely they are to be observed.A1 Gore calls global warming an “inconvenient truth”, as if merely recognizing it could put us on a path to a solution. But the real truth is that we dont know enough to relieve global warming, and without major technological breakthroughs we cant do much about it.From 2003 to 2050, the worlds population is predicted to grow from 6.4 billion to 9.1 billion, a 42% increase. If energy use per person and technology remain the same, total energy use and greenhouse gas emissions (mainly, CO2) will be 42% higher in 2050.But thats too low, because societies that grow richer use more energy. We need economic growth unless we leave the worlds poor to their present poverty and freeze everyone elses living standards. With modest growth, energy use and greenhouse emissions will more than double by 2050.No government will adopt strict restrictions on economic growth and personal freedom (limits on electricity usage, driving and travel) that might cut back global warming. Still, politicians want to show theyre “doing something” Consider the Kyoto Protocol. It allowed countries that joined to punish those that didnt. But it hasnt reduced CO2 emissions (up about 25% since 1990), and many signatories didnt adopt tough enough policies to hit their 2008-2012 targets. The practical conclusion is that if global warming is a potential disaster, the only solution is new technology. Only an aggressive research and development program might find ways of breaking our dependence on fossil fuels or dealing with it.The trouble with the global warming debate is that it has become a moral problem when its really an engineering one. The inconvenient truth is that if we dont solve the engineering problem, were helpless.16What is said about global warming in the first paragraph?AIt may not prove an environmental crisis at all.BIt is an issue requiring worldwide commitments.CSerious steps have been taken to avoid or stop it.DVery little will be done to bring it under control.答案D17According to the authors understanding, what is Al Gores view on global warming?AIt is a reality both people and politicians are unaware of.BIt is a phenomenon that causes us many inconveniences.CIt is a problem that can be solved once it is recognized.DIt is an area we actually have little knowledge about.答案C18Greenhouse emissions will more than double by 2050 because of _.Aeconomic growthBwasteful use of energyCthe widening gap between the rich and poorDthe rapid advances of science and technology答案A19The author believes that, since the signing of the Kyoto Protocol, _.Apoliticians have started to do something to better the situationBfew nations have adopted real tough measures to limit energy useCreductions in energy consumption have greatly cut back global warmingDinternational cooperation has contributed to solving environmental problems答案B20What is the message the author intends to convey?AGlobal warming is more of a moral issue than a practical one.BThe ultimate solution to global warming lies in new technology.CThe debate over global warming will lead to technological breakthroughs.DPeople have to give up certain material comforts to stop global warming.答案B第三部分:词汇与结构(每小题2分,满分20分)此部分共有5个未完成的句子,针对每个句子中未完成的部分有4个选项,请从A.B.C.D四个选项中选出正确选项。1.The manager will not us to use his car.A. have B. let C. agree D. allow答案D 2. her and then try to copy what she does.A.
