A particular danger was thought to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. 2 Thus began a long time ago when even the rich in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way. 3 Upon learning that a nobleman had taken a bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman should not go out. 4 Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World War . Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea: clothes need to be whiter than white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far? 5 Many first-time parents nervously try to warn their children off touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of disease. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist(免疫学家),encourages children to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter position is gaining some ground. A. So did the king of England in 1546. B. The rich and noble man lived an elegant life. C. Though the belief in the merit of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18th century. D. However, there is nothing fixed about attitudes to dirt. E. So how to get rid of dirt has been under heated discussion. F. Henry IV, King of France, was famously dirty. G. Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. 2. 选A。 Passage 3 Many of our problems come from within our own minds. They arent caused by events, bad luck, or other people. We cause them through our own poor mental habits. 1 Stop jumping to conclusions. 2 First, they assume that they know what is going to happen, so they stop paying attention and act on their assumption instead. Human beings are lousy fortune-tellers. 3 That makes the action wrong too. The second aspect of this habit is playing the mind-reader and assuming you know why people do what they do or what theyre thinking. Wrong again, big time. More relationships are destroyed by this particular kind of stupidity than by any other. 4 A huge proportion of those “oughts” and “shoulds” that you carry around are most likely needless. All that they do for you is make you feel nervous or guilty. Whats the point? When you use these imaginary rules on yourself, you clog your mind with petty restrictions and childish orders. And when you try to impose them on others, you make yourself into a bully, a boring nag, or a self-righteous bigot(顽固者). Dont hang on to the past. 5 The more you turn them over in your mind, the worse youll feel and the bigger theyll look. Dont try to fight misery. Let go and move on. Do that and youve removed just about all its power to hurt you. A. Making conclusion demands us paying much careful consideration. B. Most of what they assume is wrong. C. Maybe the past means a lot to you. D. Here are 3 habits you should set aside right away to free yourself from the many problems each one will be causing you. E. Dont invent rules. F. There are two common ways this habit increases peoples difficulties. G. Most of the anger, frustration, misery, and despair in this world come from people clinging to past hurts and problems. 而且后面“When you use these imaginary rules on yourself, you clog your mind with petty restrictions and childish orders.” G。Passage 4 Are you truly happy? Do you ever know what it means to be happy and what it takes to achieve happiness? 1 The following are a few tips that I follow to create happiness in my life. Make a plan for attaining goals that you believe will make you happy. Your moods will very likely increase if you are going after something you value. Surround yourself with happy people. 2 On the contrary, if you are around people who are happy, their emotional state will be infectious. When something goes wrong, try to figure out a solution instead of being absorbed in self pity. 3 Because they know that with a little thought they can turn the circumstances back to their favor. Spend a few minutes each day thinking about the things that make you happy. These few minutes will give you the opportunity to focus on the positive things in your life and will lead you to continuous happiness. 4 Whether you treat yourself to lunch, take a long, relaxing bath or simply spend a few extra minutes on your appearance, you will be subconsciously putting yourself in a better mood. 5 Being overweight or not eating nutritious foods can have a negative effect on your mood. A. These are important questions for anyone who is seeking happiness to ask themselves. B. Keeping healthy is another way to achieve happiness. C. The sense of happiness may differ among different people when facing the same matter. D. It is easy to begin to think negatively when you are surrounded by people who think that way. E. Truly happy people dont allow setbacks to affect their mood. F. Keeping fit has been always a hot topic in society. G. Its also important to take some time each day to do something nice for yourself. 1. 选A。 B。Passage 5 1 Employers often decide to hire someone in the first three minutes of the interview. They judge you by your appearance, attitude and manners. 2 A smile shows a confident and positive attitude. When you introduce yourself, make eye contact with the interviewer. Some interviewers offer a handshake. Others dont. Try to be as natural as possible. 3 The way you sit, walk, gesture, use your voice and show feelings on your face is all part of your body language. It makes the interviewer know how you feel about yourself and the situation you are in. Are you feeling positively about yourself? Your abilities? Your interest in the job? Speak clearly and loudly enough. 4 When you speak, look at the interviewer. Also, dont say negative things about yourself, or former employer. Listen to questions carefully. If you dont understand a question, ask the interviewer to repeat or explain. Almost everyone is nervous in a job interview. Interviewers know that. 5 But they expect you to try to control your nervousness. They expect you to show confidence in your ability to do the jobl. At the end of the interview, thank the interviewer for her or his time. Its a good idea to send a short thank-you letter right after the interview, or deliver it by hand. Phone the company if you have not heard anything after one week. Ask if they have made a decision about the job. Good luck!A. But careful attention should be paid to your body language. B. They dont expect you to be totally calm and relaxed. C. Show interest and enthusiasm in your voice. D. The impression you make at the beginning of an interview is very important.E. A friendly smile when you walk into the room is important. F. People who often smile live a healthier life.G. You should find out the proper way to deal with your nervousness. 3. 选A。 故选A。4. Passage 1 As soon as I walked outside,I 1 (greet)with the shimmering white blanket of cold. 2 the chill overwhelming my skin, inside I was warm. I felt as though I could be giving off heat; I had the desire to stay out in this freeze for hours. It was the type of day 3 speaks to you through its elements; I took a deep breath to hear more snow was coming. As I walked I looked up,trying to realize 4 made this day so beautiful,so serene. It was as if time 5 (put)temporarily on hold and I along with it. Or maybe I was the only one unpausedEither way,the solitude was comforting, and I sensed myself floating away. I sat down on the edge of a curb and listened. All there was to hear was the wind 6 (rush)over the top of my head and circling some old, cracking leaves some yards 7 .To me it was the 8 (reassure)sound of nature, trying not to be forgotten. It did start to snow. None of those little flurries, but big, fat flakes which clung immediately 9 their surface. Then it was time to go and my 10 (幻想)had to end. As I began walking again, I drifted back into this time frame, calm and cleared. Now if only I could remember where I was going.Key: was greeted, Despite, that, what, had been put, rushing, away, reassuring, to, reveriePassage 2 Some herbs and spices may be gaining importance in modern medicine. They help to 1 (sharp) the taste of many foods. Others are chosen for their smell. Still others were used traditionally for health reasons. Researchers from Purdue University reported about the effects of red pepper in the journal Physiology. They found that small changes in diet, like adding the pepper, may reduce the desire to eat. The spice turmeric comes from a tropical plant common to India. Research 2 _(involve)turmeric is not new. Scientists 3 (study) its medical possibilities for many years. For example, researchers in Singapore completed one such study several years ago. The study 4 (base) on earlier evidence 5 turmeric has strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities. These qualities can help protect 6 damage to the bodys tissues and other injuries. The researchers said turmeric may reduce evidence of damage in the brains of patients 7 Alzheimers disease. For this reason, the researchers designed a study that examined results from a mental-performance test of older Asian adults. The study involved curry, which contains turmeric. The adults were sixty to ninety-three years old. None had severe memory losses. Those who sometimes ate curry did better on the tests 8 individuals who_ 9 (极少)or never ate curry. This was also true of those 10 ate it often or very often.Key: sharpen, involving, have been studying, was based , that, against, with, than, rarely, whoPassage 3 Three passions, simple 1 overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the 2 (渴望)for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable 3 (同情)for the suffering of mankind. I have sought love, first, 4 it brings ecstasy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves the terrible loneliness. I have sought it, finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is 5 I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what-at last-I have found. With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved. Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always it brought me 6 to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate(回响) in my heart. Children in famine, victims 7 (torture) by oppressors, helpless old people a hated 8 (负担) to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer. This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again 9 the chance 10 (offer) me.
