Genetic engineering was used to introduce the “mothers milk” genes into the animal before birth, according to the National Institute of Agribusiness Technology in Buenos Aires. As an adult the cloned cow “will produce milk that is similar to humans” in what will prove “a development of great importance for the nutrition of infants”, said the institute. “The cloned cow, named Rosita ISA, is the first in the world that incorporates two human genes that contain the proteins present in human milk,” said the statement. The Argentine team said the Chinese only introduced one human gene, while their research involved two, meaning the milk will more closely resemble that of humans. “Our goal was to raise the nutrition value of cows milk by adding two human genes, which do good to the immune system of the infants.” said Adrian Mutto, from the National University of San Martin which worked with the institute. Cristina Kirchner, President of Argentina, said that the scientific institute “makes all Argentines proud.” She also rejected that she had rejected the “honour” of having the cow named after her. “They came to tell me that the name is Cristina, but what woman would like to have a cow named after her? It appeared to me to be more proper to call it Rosita.” 1. Why did the scientists in Argentina introduce two human genes into the cloned cow? A. Because the Chinese engineers only introduced one gene in their research. B. Because Cristina Kirchner, President of Argentina expected them to incorporate two genes. C. Because two human genes enabled the cow to produce more nutritious milk for the infants. D. Because Mutto, from the National University of San Martin thought they could be the first to incorporate two genes in the cow. 2. What can be inferred from Cristina Kirchners statements? A. She was quite satisfied with the research done by the institute. B. She considered it an honor to name the special cow. C. She felt it improper to be named after the cow. D. She refused to give a name to the cow out of self-respect. 3. Which of the following can best replace the underlined expression in Paragraph 4? A. have more varieties thanB. be more similar to C. have more nutrition thanD. be more different from 4. Whats the passage mainly about? A. The importance of genetic engineering. B. Ways to improve “mothers milk”. C. A cloned cow to produce human-like milk. D. Advanced agricultural technology in Argentina. BWhen I asked my mother-in-law to select which meals shed like me to order from the home-delivery menu, she only chose the ones her husband would like. This goes way beyond politeness. She is actually feeling uncomfortable voicing what she wants. She developed the main symptom of Askers Syndrome that ones unable to ask for what one wants. Its not just older women who have this problem. Askers Syndrome can strike the young. I have single friends who wont ask a man out on a date because they fear being considered “too forward”. My five-year-old daughter Violet is showing the early stages of Askers Syndrome. Shes learned that women dont ask, but rather drop hints. Shell say, “Remember last Sunday afternoon we went to the park?” rather than “Can we go to the park?” Apart from women and girls problematic relationship with appetite, food and dating, its widely reported that women are less likely than men to ask for pay rises and promotions. Instead, they withdraw, hoping that somebody else will decide they are worthy and make them promoted. No doubt, many women develop Askers Syndrome as a defensive measure because theyve been labeled as pushy or rude for simply asking for what they want. But in the long term, choosing not to express our desires doesnt serve us well. Its time to cure ourselves and our girls of Askers Syndrome. I dont want to raise a future burnt chop mother who denies her wish for food, power and success and anything else. I insist that she ask for what she wants directly. For women in our culture, asking is a skill that we need to learn and practice. And if we all do it, then women asking will become the norm rather than the exception. 5. The authors mother-in-law is mentioned in Paragraph 1 to _. A. introduce the old ladyB. set an example C. talk about her illnessD. lead in a topic 6. Which is TRUE about Askers Syndrome according to the passage? A. It often causes problems with appetite and food. B. Older women develop more of its symptoms. C. More women suffer from it than men in their career. D. Women deny asking for what they want because they are too polite. 7. The passage is written to _. A. list symptoms of Askers SyndromeB. encourage women to express their desires C. explain the causes of refusing to askD. suggest ways to ask for more CMoney spent on advertising is money spent as well as any I know of. It serves directly to assist a rapid distribution of goods at reasonable prices, thereby establishing a firm home market and so making it possible to provide for export at competitive prices. By drawing attention to new ideas it helps enormously to raise standards of living. By helping to increase demand it ensures an increased need for labour, and is therefore an effective way to fight unemployment. It lowers the costs of many services: without advertisements your daily newspaper would cost four times as much, the price of your television license would need to be doubled, and travel by bus or tube would cost 20 per cent more. And perhaps most important of all, advertising provides a guarantee of reasonable value in the products and services you buy. Apart from the fact that twenty-seven Acts of Parliament govern the terms of advertising, no regular advertiser dare promote a product that fails to live up to the promise of his advertisements. He might fool some people for a little while through misleading advertising. He will not do so for long, for mercifully the public has the good sense not to buy the inferior article more than once. If you see an article consistently advertised, it is the surest proof I know that the article does what is claimed for it, and that it represents good value. Advertising does more for the material benefit of the community than any other force I can think of. There is one more point I feel I ought to touch on. Recently I heard a well-known television personality declare that he was against advertising because it persuades rather than informs. He was drawing excessively fine distinctions. Of course advertising seeks to persuade. If its message were confined merely to information and that in itself would be difficult if not impossible to achieve, for even a detail such as the choice of the colour of a shirt is subtly persuasiveadvertising would be so boring that no one would pay any attention. But perhaps that is what the well-known television personality wants. 8. By the first sentence of the text the author means that _. A. he is fairly familiar with the cost of advertising B. everybody knows well that advertising is money consuming C. advertising costs money like everything else D. it is worthwhile to spend money on advertising 9. In the text, which of the following is NOT included in the advantages of advertising? A. Securing greater fame.B. Providing more jobs. C. Enhancing living standards.D. Reducing newspaper cost. 10. The author thinks that the well-known TV personality is _. A. very precise in passing his judgement on advertising B. interested in nothing but the buyers attention C. correct in telling the difference between persuasion and information D. obviously partial in his views on advertising 11. In the authors opinion, _. A. advertising can seldom bring material benefit to man by providing information B. advertising informs people of new ideas rather than wins them over C. there is nothing wrong with advertising in persuading the buyer D. the buyer is not interested in getting information from an advertisement DIt was 3:45 in the morning when the vote was finally taken. After six months of arguing and final 16 hours of hot parliamentary debates, Australians Northern Territory became the first legal authority in the world to allow doctors to take the lives of incurably ill patients who wish to die. The measure passed by the convincing vote of 15 to 10. Almost immediately word flashed on the Internet and was picked up, half a world away, by John Hofsess, executive director of the Right to Die Society of Canada. He sent it on via the groups on-line service, Death NET. Says Hofsess: “We posted bulletins all day long, because of course this isnt just something that happened in Australia. Its world history.” The full import may take a while to sink in. The NT Rights of the Terminally Ill law has left physicians and citizens alike trying to deal with its moral and practical implications. Some have breathed sighs of relief, others, including churches, right-to-life groups and the Australian Medical Association, bitterly attacked the bill and the haste of its passage. But the tide is unlikely to turn back. In Australia where an aging population, life-extending technology and changing community attitudes have all played their part other states are going to consider making a similar law to deal with euthanasia. In the US and Canada, where the right-to-die movement is gathering strength, observers are waiting for the dominoes to start falling. Under the new Northern Territory law, an adult patient can request deathprobably by a deadly injection or pillto put an end to suffering. The patient must be diagnosed as terminally ill by two doctors. After a “cooling off” period of seven days, the patient can sign a certificate of request. After 48 hours the wish for death can be met. For Lloyd Nickson, a 54-year-old Darwin resident suffering from lung cancer, the NT Rights of Terminally Ill law means he can get on with living without the haunting fear of his suffering: a terrifying death from his breathing condition. “Im not afraid of dying from a spiritual point of view, but what I was afraid of was how Id go, because Ive watched people die in the hospital fighting for oxygen and clawing at their masks,” he says. 12. From the second paragraph we learn that _. A. the objection to euthanasia is slow to come in other countries. B. physicians and citizens share the same view on euthanasia. C. changing technology is chiefly responsible for the hasty passage of the law. D. it takes time to realize the significance of the laws passage. 13. When the author says that observers are waiting for the dominoes to start falling, he means_. A. observers are taking a wait-and-see attitude towards the future of euthanasia B. similar bills are likely to be passed in the US, Canada and other countries C. observers are waiting to see the result of the game of dominoes D. the effect-taking process of the passed bill may finally come to a stop 14. When Lloyd Nickson dies, he will _. A. face his death with calm characteristic of euthanasia B. experience the suffering of a lung cancer patient C. have an intense fear of terrible suffering D. undergo a cooling off period of seven days 15. The authors attitude towards euthanasia seems to be that of _. A. oppositionB. suspicionC. approvalD. indifference 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。( E: 涂AB F: 涂BC G: 涂CD ) Jealous of the kids at school who are smarter than you and seem to learn more quickly? Scientists have found that IQ changes are linked to changes in part of the brain called gray matter, which was seen to grow and become denser in the brains of people whose IQs improved greatly. 18 One is to train your short-term memory. Previous research has proven that short-term memory is the basis for intelligence, so trying to recognize or retell something that you have seen or heard can help raise your overall brain power. 19 A good nights sleep will also help improve your concentration. 20 It helps you stay focused for longer the next day.
