The people who planned the fair were looking for an attraction that would bring people to Chicago. The Eiffel Tower had been a great success for the fair in Pairs in 1889, and they wanted something like that.George Ferris handed in drawings of a giant wheel that people could ride on. At first everyone laughed at his strange idea. But Mr. Ferris didnt give up, and finally the idea was accepted. The ride opened in June of 1893.That first wheel had thirty six enclosed cars, each holding sixty passengers. When filled it carried 2,160 people. During that summer in Chicago one and a half million people rode the Ferris wheel, which was named after Ferris. Six platforms were used to pick up and drop off passengers. Each ride was two full turns of the wheel. On the first turn, it made six stops for loading. Then the second turn was a nonstop nine-minute ride. Each car had five large glass windows in front and in back, giving everyone a great view of Chicago and Lake Michigan. After the fair the ride was moved to a nearby amusement park built especially to show off the wheel. In 1904 it was moved againthis time to St. Louis for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. After the fair in St. Louis closed, the wheel stood unused. In 1906 it was finally sold to a company for scrap(废弃材料)metal. It took 200 pounds of dynamite to bring it down.Fortunately a Chicago bridge builder, W. E. Sullivan, figured out how to make a smaller Ferris wheel that could easily be taken apart and put together. In 1906 he started the company that still makes many of the Ferris wheels used today. But whenever you ride one remember that it all began with George Ferris very strange idea.21What is the main idea of the passage?A. That question is not difficult to answer if we change the word poetry to songs.I sing when I feel good. When I sing my favorite songs, I feel even better. Sometimes when I am listening to music and to the song words, I feel that it was written for me. A good song always makes me feel something. There are songs that I sing in my head between classes and songs that I want to sing when the school bell rings by the end of the day. They help me get through the day. They are like bright and warm colors in the middle of grays and shades. I like songs about love and friendship. The extraordinary thing is that my feelings are more special when I sing my favorite songs in English.I also like reading. I used to avoid poetry until an e-friend told me I should recite poems and not look up the meaning of the words. Poetry uses many difficult words and idioms, but the best thing is to just forget about them. In the beginning I felt quite strange. Now I always lock the door. Reading aloud gives you a strange feeling, but when you have some practice and fall into the rhythm, and the sounds of the words, it is really a special experience.I started with small poems, but now I think I most like long poems. I have different feelings with different poems. When I have had a bad day at school, I read Keats and forget everything. When I am sad I read Wordsworth by the light of a candle. When the poem is finished, I close the book and my sadness is gone.25Which of the following statements is closest in meaning to the underlined sentence?A. Songs are like different colors in different times.B. Songs can help people better understand colors.C. Songs can describe a mixture of different colors.D. Songs can bring people warmth and comfort.26What we can infer from the passage is that_.A. the writer likes singing songs aloud at any timeB. songs and poems can help get over bad emotionsC. the writers native language is EnglishD. the writer like songs better than poems27What can we know about the poems of Keats and Wordsworth through the passage?A. Keats poems are full of bad feelings.B. Wordsworths poems contain much sad description.C. Both of their poetry can create positive feelings.D. The themes of their poems are not different at all.CHerbal medicine (草药), which has been used for medicinal purposes, is the use of plants to treat diseases. Many herbalists use the entire plant, from the flowers, stems, leaves, and roots, in the form of everything from teas to pills. These plants contain natural, chemical things that can treat the body for a variety of diseases- such as allergies, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, migraine, chronic fatigue, and cancer, among others.Nowadays an increasing number of people prefer to adopt these plants to treat their diseases because, compared with chemical medicine, herbal medicine has its own advantages. Herbal medicine and remedies (治疗) are more effective than chemical medicine for certain diseases. The chemical medicine given by a chemist could have certain negative side effects. However, many of the herbal medicine and remedies do not have negative side effects. If any, they are softer than chemical medicine. Obesity is the cause of many of the health problems. Herbal medicine can help weight-loss more effectively and improve overall health. However, the cure using herbal medicine and supplements (营养品) would take some time, and therefore people are supposed to possess enough patience. Worse still, herbal medicine contains a variety of ingredients (成分) and people have to be sure that their body agrees with the ingredients and that it is not allergic (过敏).A point worth mentioning here is herbal remedies and medicine for certain illnesses may have negative side effects. These side effects may not be shown at once, but would take months or even years. In the early stages, if the herbal medicine is not agreeing with you, it is wise to stop using it.When used correctly and directed by doctors, herbs can help treat a variety of diseases. But keep in mind that the herbal medicine industry is not regulated, so herbal products are often misleading and may contain additives (添加剂) and that are not listed on the label (标签). Some herbs may cause allergic reactions or interact with other drugs, and some are poisonous if used improperly or at high doses (剂量). Taking herbs on your own increases your risk.28What is the main idea of Paragraph 1?A. The origin of herbal medicine. B. The history of herbal medicine.C. The definition and function of herbal medicine. D. The naturally harmless characteristics of herbal medicine.29How does the author explain the advantages of herbal medicine?A. By using examples. B. By making a comparison.C. By analyzing research statistics. D. By performing lots of experiments.30What is the authors attitude towards herbal medicine?A. Negative. B. Disapproving. C. Unclear. D. Supportive.31Which of the following will the author agree with?A. Choose safe herbal medicine freely.B. Take herbal medicine under the guidance of doctors.C. Use herbs together because the combination is more effective.D. Purchase herbal medicine from reliable manufacturers to ensure quality.DIt has become a certain belief among the public-drink at least eight glasses of water a day to improve health and wellbeing. Bottled water companies often repeal it to increase their sales but it is actually a silly idea. There is no evidence to prove the advantages of drinking eight glasses of water a day, scientists say.The misunderstanding is caused from the suggestion that adults should drink 2.5 liters of water daily, which was stressed by the British Medical Journal in December. The important part of the suggestion that most of this quantity of water is contained in prepared foods, however, is usually ignored.US researchers who reviewed the evidence concluded that most people do not need to worry about the amount of water they drink every .day. Besides drinking water, they will be getting plenty of liquid(液体)in other ways. Caffeinated drinks such as tea, coffee and cola and alcohol(酒)can help reach the daily total if they dont drink too much, though these drinks help the production of urine (尿). Less well known arc the dangers of drinking too much water, causing water poisoning, low salt levels and even death. The review of research by Dan Negoianu, from the University of Pennsylvania, found that not a single study included the suggestion of drinking eight glasses of water a day. Although one small study suggested that drinking water could result in fewer headaches, the results were not very important. However, the benefits of drinking some water to prevent a pain in head after drinking too much alcohol are, separately, proved to be true.No studies showed any advantages to the color of the skin because of the increased water taken into bodies. Dehydration(脱水)can make skin less pleasant, but there was no clear evidence to support the idea that water helps people keep a youthful appearance. The researchers also found no evidence that drinking lots of water does some good to the bodys organs(器官).32From the passage, we know that the suggestion about drinking eight glasses of water a day .A. causes some serious diseases B. has enough scientific evidence to support itC. is misunderstood by people in fact D. was published by the British Medical Journal33From the passage we learn that many people dont know that_ .A. the production of urine can cause water to lose B. health can be improved by drinking plenty of waterC. better skin can result from intake of much water D. caffeinated drinks can provide the water people need34What can be proved about drinking a lot of water according to the passage?A. Reducing the bad influence of drinking alcohol. B. Helping to keep youthful looks.C. Making the bodys organs stronger. D. Causing bad headaches.35The writers main purpose of writing this passage is to .A. persuade people to drink different kinds of waterB. tell people drinking much water is not as healthy as is consideredC. warn people of the danger of drinking much waterD. help people realize the importance of drinking enough water every day第二节(共5个小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Tiny TomatoesTomatoes come in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors.
