Use the word given in the brackets to form a word that fits in the place.Did you ever have someones name on the tip of your tongue and yet you were _18_ (able) to recall it? When this happens again, do not try to recall it. Do something else for a couple of minutes until the name may come into your memory. The name is there since you have met this person and you have heard his name. It only has to be dug out. The _19_ (one) effort to recall prepares the mind for operation, but it is the subconscious _20_ (move) that go to work to dig up an unclear memory. Forcing _21_ (your) to recall almost never helps because it doesnt _22_ (loose) your memory; it only tightens it. In an examination students find the preparatory method helps. They read over the questions before _23_ (try) to answer any of them. Then they answer first the ones of which they are most certain. Meanwhile, deeper mental _24_ (active) in the subconscious mind are taking place; work is being done on the more difficult question. By the time the _25_ (easy) questions are answered, answers to the more difficult ones will _26_ (usual) begin to appear into _27_ (conscious). It is often just a question of waiting for recall to come to the memory.Section C (共10小题,每小题1分,满分10分)Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Following increasing calls for the return of artistic objects that were removed decades or centuries ago, some of the worlds leading museums have signed a declaration that they will not hand back the ancient artifacts to their countries origin. They say people all over the world have only been able to fully appreciate ancient civilizations because these museums have provided access to these artistic objects. The ancient civilizations would not be so deeply admired today if these ancient artifacts were not so widely available to an international public in major museums throughout Europe and America. For example, Egyptian culture would not have become so well-known if the museums had not put Egyptian museums on show. The British Museum has not signed the declaration, but says it fully supports it. Over the recent year, it has faced growing pressure to hand back the Elgin Marbles, sculptures taken from the Parthenon in Athens, Greece, in the 19th century. But the British Museum has said that the Museum is the best possible place for them. “They must remain here if the museum is to continue to achieve its aim, which is to show the world to the world,” said the director of the museum.( ) 38. What reason do the major museums provide for not handing back the ancient objects?A. Only in the leading museums can the objects be fully appreciated by the world.B. It is better for those objects to remain at certain place than to be moved around.C. They need those well-known ancient objects to attract people from all over the world.D. Ancient civilizations can only be admired if they are removed from their home countries.( ) 39. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as one of the “countries of origin” in the article? A. Turkey B. Britain C. Egypt D. Greece( ) 40. What does “the world” mean in “show the world to the world”? A. The global village B. The leading museums C. The ancient civilizations D. The international public( B )Im usually fairly skeptical about any research that concludes that people are either happier or unhappier or more or less certain of themselves than they were 50 years ago. While any of these statements might be true, they are practically impossible to be proved scientifically. Still, I was struck by a report which concluded that todays children are significantly more anxious than children in the 1950s. In fact, the analysis showed normal children aged 9 to 17 exhibit a higher level of anxiety today than children who were treated for mental illness 50 years ago.Why are Americas kids so stressed? The report cites two main causes: increasing physical isolation brought on by high divorce rates and less involvement in community, among other things and a growing perception that the world is a more dangerous place.Considering that we cant turn the clock back, adults can still do plenty to help the next generation cope.At the top of the list is nurturing a better appreciation of the limits of individualism. No child is an island. Strengthening social ties help build communities and protect individuals against stress. To help kids build stronger connections with others, you can pull the plug on TVs and computers. Your family will thank you later. They will have more time for face-to-face relationships, and they will get more sleep.Limit the amount of virtual violence your children are expected to. Its not just from video games and movies; children see a lot of murder and crime on the local news.Keep your expectations for your daily routine. It will help you cope with your own anxiety and provide a good model for your kids. Sometimes anxiety is unavoidable. But it doesnt have to ruin your life.( ) 41. The author thinks that the conclusions of any research about peoples state of mind are _. A. surprising B. confusing C. illogical D. questionable( ) 42. What does the author mean by “we cant turn the clock back” (para 3)A. Its impossible to slow down the pace of change.B. The social reality children are facing cant be changed.C. Lessons learned from the past should not be forgotten.D. Its impossible to forget the past. ( ) 43. According to the analysis, compared with normal children today, children treated as mentally ill 50 years ago _. A. probably suffered less from anxiety. B. were probably less self-centered. C. were considered isolated physical D. were considered less individualistic ( ) 44. The first and most important thing parents should do to help their children is _.A. to provide them with a safer environment. B. to lower their expectations for themC. to get them more involved socially D. to set a good model for them to follow( C )Nervous suspects locked up in Britains newest police station may feel relieved by a pleasant yellow color on the door. If they are close to confessing a crime, the blue on the wall might tip the balance. Gwent Police have abandoned colors such as grays and browns of the 20th-century police cell (牢房) and have used color psychology to decorate them. Ystrad Mynach station, which recently opened at a cost of 5 million, has four cells with glass doors for prisoners who suffer from claustrophobia (幽闭恐怖症). Designers have painted the frames yellow, which researchers say is a calming color. Other cells contain a royal blue line because psychologists believe that the color is likely to encourage truthfulness. The station has 31 cells, including 12 with a “live scan” system for drunken or disturbed prisoners, which detects the rise and fall of their chest. An alarm alerts officers if a prisoners breathing stops and carries on ringing until the door is opened. Designers and psychologists have worked for years on color. Blue is said to suggest trust, efficiency, duty, logic, coolness, thinking and calm. It also suggests coldness and unfriendliness. It is thought that strong blues will stimulate clear thought and lighter, soft colors will calm the mind and aid concentration. Yellow is linked with confidence, self-respect and friendliness. Get the color wrong and it could cause fear, depression and anxiety, but the right yellow can lift spirits and self-respect. Ingrid Collins, a psychologist who specializes in the effects of color, said that color was an “energy force”. She said: “Blue does enhance communication but I am not sure it would enhance truthful communication.” Yellow, she said, affected the mind. Red, on the other hand, should never be considered because it could increase aggression. Mrs. Collins praised the designers for using colors in the cells. Gwent is not the first British force to experiment with color to calm down or persuade prisoners to co-operate. In the 1990s Strathclyde Police used pink in cells based on research carried out by the US Navy. ( ) 45. The expression “tip the balance” in paragraph 1 probably indicates that the blue might _.A. let suspects keep their balance B. help suspects to confess their crimesC. make suspects cold and unfriendly in law court D. enable suspects to change their attitudes to colors( ) 46. Which of the following colors should NOT be used in cells according to the passage?A. Pink. B. Yellow C. Blue. D. Red. ( ) 47.
