questions onAnswer Sheet1.For questions1-6,choose the best answerfrom thefour choices marked A),B),C)and D).For questions7-10,plete thesentences with the informationgiven in the passage. The OlympicBuildings inBeijing Themain stadiumm forthis years Beijing23Olympics is,quite simply, stunning. Here is an4adventure insteel andconcrete,a buildi5ngdespite itsage-old purpose-like noot6her.Its structureis verynearly plete,w7hile thefit-out,with itsexcess shops,resta8urants,cafes,bars andmeeting places,is racin9g ahead. If Chinahas setout toimpress thew orldwith thexxOlympics, the stadiuma10nd itsattendant buildingthe AquaticsCent11er and Digital Beijinghave seta headypre12cedent.The generalimpression Aneye-catching designeven from a distance, the stadiumproves to be anoverwhelming plexartifact as you get up close, and it is justas dizzyingon theinside. The Chinesenamed itthe Birds Nestas soonas itscreatorsSwiss architectsHerzog&de Meuron working withArup and the ChinaArchitectural Designand ResearchGroupunveiled theirdesign five years ago.It measures320meters by297meters,and is69meters high. Its mesmericsteel frame,41,875tons in all, loops, swoops andswirls overand aroundthe great,red,concrete91,000-seat arena. What hadseemed to be asolid structurefromadistance proves to be an exquisiteChinese puzzleclose up.An architecturalforest JacquesHerzog hasdescribed this12-meter-deep frameas“an architecturalforest”,its beams, stairs, frames andother steelelements standingin for trees and branches, and providing an awe-inspiring transitionalspace betweenthe exterior, the OlympicPark, and theinterior, where the arena sits. The latter,a great, red bowlof concrete, provesto be almostcircular,so everyoneis equallyclose to the running-jumping-vaulting action. This makesit justthat bitdifferent fromother ambitiousstadiums.Above thetiers ofplastic seatsand confident-looking clocks, the roofis asimple membrane(膜)designed tokeep outsun andstorm(the Olympicstake placein August, when Beijingis hotand thundery)and toact as a foil to thatplicated steelskeleton.Landscape When the Gamesare over, the stadiumwill hostsporting and cultural events,as well as rockconcerts andthose flag-waving parades,so belovedof the Chinese.By then, the stadiumwill sitfortably inlandscaped gardens, also designed by Herzog&de Meuron, intended to be contemporaryplays ontraditional Chinesethemes. If allgoes toplan, the OlympicPark might yet turnout to be anUnforbidden City,a peoples palaceof thefuture. The Birds Nestsits near the secondof themajor BeijingOlympic venues, the Water Cube;or,to giveit itsofficial name, the NationalAquatics Center. This magicalstructuredesigned byAustralian architectsPTW withArup, the ShenzenDesign Instituteand theChina State Construction and Engineering Corporationhas justopened and is readyhosting a Chinese swimmingpetition.13WaterCubeIn essence, the WaterCube is a big, steel andconcrete boxcontaining ahuge swimming pool flankedby17,000seats.But whatan extraordinarybox it is!The patternof thestructure has been designedto holdhuge pillowsof ETFE,a lightweightsubstitute forglass, the sameinflated hi-tech materialused tocover thedomes ofCornwalls EdenCenter. The patternis basedon thenatural formationof soapbubbles togive a random, organic appearance. It wasclearly clever, not tomention fun,to makea bigbox intoan architecturaland engineeringconjuring trick.Yet this is also a responsibledesign;the pillowsheat upin thesun, and thisin turnheats thewater in the pooland feedsinto therest of the building. It isexceedingly efficient. In theevening,as anadded bonus, the WaterCube glowsa happy, swimmingpoolblue;it looksgreat from the street, one ofthose buildingsyou feelpelled togo andhave alook at.The designer of Digital Beijing Thelast of the threemajor Olympicbuildings was designedbyZhu Pei,a Beijingarchitect trainedin the US aswellas China. This isDigital Beijing, the controland datacenter for the Games, scheduled to bee amuseum and exhibition center for digital design and technologies and, apparently,a municationshub for the city.Zhusdesign,in contrastto thestadium,is asequence oftall buildingsthat look,on the first encounter, rather likeupright1960s IBM puters.Zhu isone of a numberof Chinese architects whohave beenable to set uptheir own studios freelyin recentyears, and who are keen to inventand developa modernChinese architecture that playswith, rather thanmimics, tradition, one thatis asindependent asit wishesto befrom contemporarywestern practice. The greatluxury Zhuhas enjoyedwith theOlympic projectis time.Digital BeijingWhat makesit adelight, asyougetupclose,is Zhus creativeuse ofunexpected materials.A specialfiber hedeveloped with a Chinesemanufacturer will be usedfor floorsin thebuilding, andisideally suitedfor theprojection ofever-changing digitalimages.Equally, the materialis strongenough tobe usedfor sci-fi stylepedestrian bridgeswithin thebuilding. As for the oddlygleaming endwalls of the pavilion(附属建筑),these areposed ofaluminum sheetsmade to look, strangely, like stone. The techniquewas developedby aChinese tincan manufacturer.Development of Chinese architectureThe threemajor Olympicbuildings have been almostfiveyearsin making. And they are notjust for the summerGames. Each hassomething tooffer anew, specifically Chinesearchitecturethatmightyetemerge in the ingyears. For this alone, each deserves a goldmedal, though thespellbinding Birds Nestdeservesaspecial awardof its own.The designswill be on showat theV&AsChinaDesign Nowexhibition, opening inLondon nextmonth, but nothingquite preparesyou forthe14reality.Herzog&de Meuron, along with an armyofChineseworkers, have calleda trulyOlympian design1.Which of possiblewords onAnswer Sheet2.Questions47to51are basedon the following passage.Cash,as theold proverbgoes,is king, and nowhereis thatmore truethan forthe day-to-day operationsofabusiness.Managing cash flow isa crucialpart ofbusiness lifebut, sadly, itisalsoareal inevitabilitythat therewill ea pointwhen itjust ebbsaway.Experts saythere areseveral basicrules businessshould followto minimizedisruptions tothe cashflow cycle. The firstis tomake surethat theterms andconditions ofall contractsare clearlystipulated tocounterparts, and duecare ispaid totheir smallprint.Make surethat thepaperwork isin order, from thecorrect deliveryaddress totheexactperson inthe aountsdepartment whohandles invoices. This iscritical whendealing withbig organizations, where severalsignatures maybe neededor wherethere aremany deliverydepots.Invoices shouldalso besent promptly.Advisers alsoremend thatsmall businessesshould notget carriedaway withthe excitementof anorder froma majorpany, whoare often slowpaying supplies, but insteadconsider thesituation18objectively.If itcosts toomuch toplete anorder orputs abusiness indanger fulfillingit, then turnit down. When privateequity paniestake overbusiness, often oneof theirfirst actsis to review andamend paymentterms ofthe targettothedetriment ofsuppliers. After all,the fastera panycollects debtsfrom customersandtheslower itpays supplier, the betterthe cashflow. But panieswho gaina reputationfor playingthis timedelay canlose orders, causing majordisruptions tocashflow.Monitoring stocklevels andsales carefullywill cutback on the needfor discounting. Many smallbusinesses failto runcredit checkson theirsuppliers orclients, which advisersbelieve isa foolisheconomy.(注意此部分试题在答题纸2上,请在答题纸2上作答。 )Section BDirections:There aretwo passagesin thissection. Each passageis followedby somequestionsorunfinished statements. For eachof themthere are four choicesmarked A),B),C)and D).You shoulddecide onthebestchoice andmarkthe correspondingletter onthe Answer Sheet withasinglelihroughthe centre.(注意此部分试题在答题卡上作答。 )Questions57to61are basedonthe following passage. The tendencyto lookfor someoutside groupto blamefor ourmisfortunes iscertainly monand itis oftensustained bysocial prejudice. There seemstobelittle doubtthat oneoftheprincipal causesof prejudiceis fear:in particularthe fearthat theinterests ofour own group aregoing tobe endangeredby theactions ofanother. This isless likely tobethe caseinastable, relatively unchangingsociety inwhich themembers ofdifferent socialand oupationalgroups knowwhat toexpect ofeach other, and knowwhat toexpect forthemselves. In timesof rapidracial andeconomic change, however, new oupationsand newsocial rolesappear, and peoplestart lookingjealously ateach otherto seewhether theirowngroupis beingleft behind.Once prejudicedevelops, itishard tostop, because thereareoftensocial forcesat workwhich activelyencourage unfoundedattitudes ofhostility andfear towardsother groups. One suchforce iseducation:We allknow thatchildren can be taughthistory insuch away asto perpetuateold hatredand oldprejudices betweenracial andpolitical groups.Another socialinfluence thathas tobe reckonedwith isthe pressureof publicopinion.People oftenthink andact differentlyin groupsfrom theway theywould doas individuals. It takesa considerableeffort ofwill, and oftencalls forgreat courage,to standout againstones fellowsand insistthat they are wrong. Why isit thatwe hearso muchmore aboutthe failuresof relationshipsbetween munitiesthan wedo aboutthe suesses?I amafraid itis partlydue tothe increasein municationwhich radio, television andthe popularpress havebrought about. In thosecountries wherethe mediaof massmunication aremercial enterprises, they tendto measuresuess bythe sizeof theiraudience;and peopleare morelikelyto19buy anewspaper, for instance,if theirattention iscaught by something dramatic, something sensational,or somethingthat arousestheir anxiety. The popularpress flourishesonscare headlines, and popularorators, especially ifthey arepoliticians addressinga relativelyunsophisticated audience, knowing that thebestway toarouse suchan audienceis tofrighten them.Where thereisareal orimaginary threatto economicsecurity, thisisespecially likelyto inflamegroup prejudice. It isimportant toremember economicfactors ifwe wishto lessenprejudice betweengroups, because unlesstheyaredealt withdirectly itwill belittle usesimply advisingpeople nottobeprejudiced againstother groupswhom theysee astheir rivals,if nottheir enemies.57.Which ofthe followingdoes theauthor seeasthechief source of prejudice?A)The distortedideas whichare believedas statementof fact.B)Fear thatpersonal interestwillbeinvaded.C)The disputewhichisfavorable tothe opponentsnot onesownpart.D)The conceptsthat amunity takesfor granted.58.What partdo newspapersand radioplay ininter-munal relationships?A)They educatepeople nottolookjealously ateach otherB)They causefurther prejudiceamong audience.C)They discussinteresting problemsin moredetails D)They drawthe audiences attentionto prejudice.59.Whatsthesubject ofparagraph2?A)How
