The real haul goes to an obscure agency called the National Reconnaissance Office, which builds and deploys the countrys high-tech, super secret spy satellites. But these secret spies in the sky have a problem now: they are not so secret. An international band of amateur astronomers is determined to find, track and webcast the location of all the members of this orbital fleet. This amateur network has run down most of the satellite-spy and commercial -that have been launched and are still in orbit, including what appeared to be a stealth satellite the U.S. deployed in 1990. All this information has been channeled to a website playfully called Heavens-A that shows where the orbital snoops are every hour of the day and nightsomething that makes some people in U.S. intelligence circles understandably outraged. “The fact that you can know readily where U.S. satellites are at any time means that if youre India or North Korea, its that much easier to hide what youre doing,” says a senior intelligence official. If he had his way, some of the satellite trackers would be prosecuted.“What these people fail to realize is that there are bad guys out there,” says the concerned senior intelligence official. But the trackers counter that if they can do it with binoculars and brainpower, so can any enemy. So why so much secrecy around not-so-secret satellites? It only makes them and other satellites watchers look even harder at the heavens.31. The phrase “divvy up” ( in Line 1) can best be replaced by _.A. spend B. plan C. divide D. cut32. The amateur astronomers have outraged some U.S. intelligence officials by _.A. finding a U.S. stealth satellite B. publicizing information of the U.S.C. refusing to take their warning of dangerD. pointing out that the U.S. satellites have a problem33. What the officials fear most is that, without secrecy, _.A. India and North Korea will know everything about the spy satelliteB. the spy satellites can no longer gather intelligence from other countriesC. the U.S. enemies may destroy the spy satellitesD. it would be difficult to hide the spy satellites34. In the eyes of those amateur astronomers, tracking satellite is _.A. something that is fairly easy to do B. a pursuit that requires strong determinationC. a great challenges to ones brainpowerD. a playful game with the intelligence agency35. What is the writers attitude towards the activity of satellite tracking?A. Supportive B. DisapprovingC. Neutral D. ConcernedPassage TwoWhen you are negotiating with someone, listen for the messages that he or she might be sending to you. For example, the word “difficult” does not mean the same as impossible. Imaging you are staying in a hotel, and you want to change your room. The managers answer of, “That would be very difficult, sir”, does not mean that he is saying “no”. It just means that he wants to know what you are prepared to offer him in return for the change of room.If you are buying a new car, and want to pay less than the price being asked, then the salesmans comment. “Im sorry, but we never negotiate on the price” means that they do negotiate on other things, like the delivery time, or the “extra” that might be available as part of the purchase. In the same car showroom, if the salesman says, “Sorry, I cant negotiate prices” then your response should be to ask who can. The message the salesman is sending suggest that his boss is the one you need to be talking to.In all of these situations, the message is never communicated in clear terms. In any negotiation, the two “players” wish to get as much out of it as they can, of course. In the three examples above, the salesmen and the hotel manager are hoping that you will accept their price or conditionsbut their “messages” make it clear that there may be room for movement and compromise. In a successful negotiation, the two sides move towards each other and reach agreement on conditions that satisfy both sides.36. According to the first paragraph, it is still quite possible to change your room if you _.A. pretend to be very ill B. discuss the terms with the managerC. quarrel with the manager D. give the manager an extra payment37. When you hear the salesman, “We never negotiate on the price” (line 2, para. 2), you should _.A. talk to the boss on the price B. find out who can negotiate pricesB. turn to another about other possibilities. D. Try to talk about other possibilities38. The word “room (line 4, para. 3) in the last paragraph means _.A. limited scope for free action or thoughtB. part of a house or other building enclosed by wallsC. freedom for people to do whatever they like D. empty space in a place for people to move freely39. The passage is mainly about _.A. how to be a successful manger B. how to get as much as possible out of a negotiationB. how to save money in business C. how to send messages in a negotiation40. According to the passage, if you are told “Usually it is impossible” in business, you should _.A. stop asking any more questions B. try to see the boss and talk to him immediatelyB. find out what exceptions there might be D. let the speaker know who you areIV. Short Answer QuestionsGood morning-if you can call it good. This is the Radio Doctor with another word of advice on how to keep yourself fit and to stay away from doctors, even National health one like myself. Well, here we again in the season of mists and mellow mugginess, as the poet describes it, the season of coughs, sneezes, influenza, stuffy noses and similar cheerful human troubles. You know they can send people to the moon and back, stop floods, blow up mountains, avoid earthquakes, but they cant cure the common cold. Its a little fellow called the cold-virus that makes you catch cold and fills up the doctors Surgery with all those depressing faces with red noses and running eyes. Theres not much a person like me who can do to help people like those get better, you know. You can write them out a prescription and have them take it to the dispensing chemist who is probably running a temperature himself, talking to everyone in hoarse whisper and would sooner be in bed.Prevention is certainly better than cure. If you havent got a cold, stay away if possible from people who have. Keep your room ventilated, keep yourself warm and dont get overtired by work or over-excited by pleasure. Remember an hours sleep before is worth two hours sleep after midnight. Dont let yourself get depressed or over-excited. A healthy mind is a healthy body; our physical illnesses are often signs of mental or emotional disturbances. I prove that point whenever the BBC makes me get out of a warm bed to come into the studio at six-thirty in the morning and when I sneeze into the microphone.Seriously though, use some common sense and avoid the common cold. And if you cant be sensible all the time, dont sneeze
