It is known as photosynthesis (光合作用)Now researchers have found a way to imitate this seemingly simple process. The artificial leaf developed by Daniel Nocera and his colleagues at MIT can be seen as a special silicon chip with catalysts (催化剂)Similar to natural leaves,it can split water into hydrogen and oxygen when put into a bucket of water. The hydrogen and oxygen gases are then stored in a fuel cell, which uses those two materials to produce electricity, located either on top of a house or beside the house.Though the leaf is only about the shape of a poker card, scientists claimed that it is promising to be an inexpensive source of electricity in developing countries. “One can imagine villages in India and Africa not long from now purchasing an affordable basic power system based on this technology,” said Nocera at a conference of the American Chemical Society. The artificial leaf is not a new idea. The first artificial leaf was invented in 1997 but was too expensive and unstable for practical use. The new leaf,by contrast,is made of cheap materials, easy to use and highly stable. In laboratory studies,Nocera showed that an artificial leaf prototype (原型) could operate continuously for at least 45 hours without a drop in activity. The wonderful improvements come from Noceras recent discovery of several powerful, new and inexpensive catalysts. These catalysts make the energy transformation inside the leaf more efficient with water and sunlight. Right now,the new leaf is about 10 times more efficient at carrying out photosynthesis than a natural one. Besides, the device can run in whatever water is available;that is,it doesnt need pure water. This is important for some countries that dont have access to pure water. With the goal to “make each home its own power station” and “give energy to the poor”,scientists believe that the new technology could be widely used in developing countries, especially in India and rural China.21Which of the following orders correctly shows how the artificial leaf is used to produce electricity?aartificial leaves split water into hydrogen and oxygenbthe hydrogen and oxygen gases are stored in a fuel cellcthe artificial leaves are put in waterdthe fuel cell uses hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricityA. c,a,b,d Bc,b,a,d Cb,c,a,d Dc,a,d,b22The purpose of the scientists at MIT in developing the new artificial leaf is to_.Abuild up more power stations in the worldBprovide cheaper energy for developing countriesCoffer people in developing countries access to pure waterDgain a deeper understanding of the photosynthesis process23The main idea of this passage is _.Aan introduction to the history of artificial leaves Ba mixture of water power and solar energyCgiving energy to the poor Dan invention copying photosynthesisBObama, Lady Gaga and Steve Jobswhat do they have in common? They are, of course, all Americans. And according to a survey by social networking site baidu. com, they all best illustrate(举例说明) the word “cool”. But just what does it mean to say someone is “cool”? Most would answer that it is something to do with being independent-minded and not following the crowd. Yale University art professor Robert Farris Thompson says that the term “cool” goes back to 15th century West African philosophy. “Cool” relates to ideas of grace(优雅) under pressure. “In Africa, ” he writes, “coolness is a positive quality which combines calmness, silence, and life.” The modern idea of “cool” developed largely in the US in the period after World War II. “Post-war cool was in part an expression of war-weariness (厌战情绪), . . . it went against the strict social rules of the time,” write sociologists Dick Pountain and David Robins in Cool Rules:Anatomy of an Attitude. But it was the American actor James Dean who became the symbol for “cool” in the hugely successful 1955 movie Rebel without a Cause. Dean plays a tough guy who disobeys his parents and the authorities. He always gets the girl, smokes cigarettes, wears a leather jacket and beats up bullies(欺凌弱小者). In the movie, Dean showed what “cool” would mean to American young people for the next 60 years. Today the focus of “cool” has changed to athletics (体育运动) stars. Often in movies about schools, students gain popularity on the athletics field more than in the classroom. This can be seen quite clearly in movies like Varsity Blues and John Tucker Must Die. But many teenagers also think being smart is cool. Chess and other thinking games have been becoming more popular in schools. “Call it the Harry Potterization of Americaa time when being smart is the new cool,” writes journalist Joe Sunnen.24If you were considered “cool” in Africa in the 15th century, you _. A. thought and acted differently from the majority B. had a calm and quiet attitude towards lifeC. didnt observe rules and authorities D. had all kinds of “bad” manners25The heroes in Varsity Blues and John Tucker Must Die are likely to be those who _. A. do very well in their studies B. are very skilled at sportsC. are good at chess and other thinking games. D. have supernatural powers like Harry Potter26Which of the following is NOT true according to the article?A. It is generally considered “cool” to be independent-minded and not to follow the crowd. B. “Cool” was used as early as the 15th century. C. Disobeying ones parents and the authorities is considered “cool” among American young people nowadays. D. Getting the first place in an exam can also be considered “cool”. 27What does the article mainly talk about? A. The origin of the word “cool”. B. The kinds of people who are “cool”. C. The changing meaning of the word “cool”. D. How to be a “ cool” person.CA research shows that humans switch from selfish to unselfish behavior when they are watched. Do you?A picture of a set of eyes on a computer screen can cause a change in the way people act. Even images of eyes on a charity donation, collection box encourage people to be unselfish, because people put more money in a collection box that has a picture of eyes on it than they do when a flower symbol is on the box.Manfred Milinski from the Max-Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Germany and Bettina Rockenbach of the University of Berlin, the authors of a new study, found that people act better when they are being watched because they feel they will be rewarded for good behavior. Their report also referred to other research showing that this response of behaving well when watched is somehow coded into humans and people respond this way unconsciously, or without realizing it. It is not just humans that act unselfishly when they are being watched. A fish called the grooming fish cleans other fish. When other fish are around, it is gentler. When no other fish are around, however, the grooming fish bites chunks from the fish it is supposed to be cleaning. The researchers suggest that the best way to get people to behave in the correct way is to make them feel watched. This could be the reason for the success of a famous American army poster. On it was a picture of an elderly man staring fiercely and pointing, it appeared, to the person who was looking at the poster. Under the picture was the caption I Want You. It encouraged hundreds of thousands of young American men to join the army during the Second World War to fight the Germans and Japanese.28According to the report, why does a person behave better when he feels he is being watched?AHe does not want to be shamed by others. BHe needs to show he is a good person.CHe desires others to like him more. DHe feels he will receive some social reward.29What is the text mainly about?AIt describes changed behavior when observed. BIt details ways to control peoples behavior.CIt tells how to make people work harder. DIt discusses different advertising methods.30According to the text, which of the following statements is true?APeople pretend to behave worse when they are watched.BFish bite other fish in a fish tank when they are alone.CPeople donatemore money when they feel they are watched.DSoldiers fought better during World War II because of a poster.31The underlined word “coded” in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to _A. hidden B. programmed C. forgotten D. learntDThe days when the management in Western companies presented gold watches to long-serving employees to thank them for loyal service is now just a memory says the Educational and Training Support AgencyThis new development in the shape and movement of the workforce throughout Western businesses is partly a result of the way that layers of middle management are being removed, leaving more workers responsible for their own developmentHaving workers take responsibility for their own development might be dramatic, but it is now the rule, says the Educational and Training Support AgencyToday, not only are workers more mobile, they have to run to keep up with changes says the Government- founded agencyIt is no longer enough for a worker to gain a set of skillsWorkers need the ability to react and get used to changes This new system is also being pushed along by the way that industry is looking to its workers to renew their own skillsIn the United States, some companies have contracts (合同) which repair their employees to show regularly how they have their skills up to dateContrary to this traditions of the past, employers in the West are now looking for autonomous(独立自主的) learners as recruits, people who can develop their own continuing education beyond the school and university systemAt the same time, businesses are developing the capacity for workers to take up autonomous learning on site in workplace, so that the skills and abilities of all workers in a business continue to improve and increaseThis,of course, says business theorywill also improve the productivity of the workers and therefore the profits of the company32The management in western companies no longer presents gold watches to their employees because _Athey are not loyal to companies Bother rewards replace gold watchesCthe way prove to be a failureDserving a company for life is rare now33The western workforce frequently changes their jobs partly because _Ahopping from job to job has become a new trendBemployees are expecting to have more experiences in their lifeCworkers have to take more responsibility for themselvesDit is easy to complete themselves by doing so34The passage seems to suggest that the present situation in society requires that workers should_.Ashow more loyalty to their companiesBtry to develop their skills to fit in with changesCgo to college to have their skills up to date Dbe quick in changing their careers if there is the possibility35Companies require their employees development mainly because _Ait will finally help to bring more profits to the companyBit can attract more workers who pay special attention to self-developmentCit is good for the employees to develop their skillsDit will make workers more responsible and loyal to the company第二节 (共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分。) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。This is the season for giving.
